To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

Been thinking of how fast things change. I used to be such an avid follower of petite anglaise back in the day when blogging was all the rage and she had such a lovely story to tell. I was captivated by her and her story, I also live in Paris, and she wrote so beautifully. How far we have come where every story is a backdrop to a sales pitch and the story is never an end in itself - probably explains my intense cynicism for the IGers of today - stop selling out your families, stop monetising your memories - you can't go back and do this again differently. I am an older parent (thank god) and, if I had just one message, it would be, just stop it now! None of this will ever, ever be worth it - you actually make me sad by how little you know about what happiness is. Think I need to bow out now because I really do find it hard to watch.

posted in the other thread.
Hmm, very interesting little peruse on the internet. Anyone who followed cigarettesandcalpol then her disappearance was most definitely due to messages received online and all that goes with a larger account and it's quite a hard read. Whilst her business account has been completely deleted her smaller account has not and that has a link to her blog, the blog is cigarettesandcalpol.com and the post is called 'Just block them'
She posted twice since regarding mental health. But it's clear she was on receipt on inbox messages regarding her parenting.

Apologies she posted once since about mental health and something she was involved with and another time about a sleepyhead.

Wearelocal · 02/06/2018 22:01

FlyingBird what do you 'get' now about instagram that you didn't previously?

Wearelocal · 02/06/2018 22:03

If you don't mind me asking?

Boredandtired · 02/06/2018 22:05

Springsprangsprung you post ties in with how I feel about the post above too.

Absolutely, flyingbird. My personal interest in this topic is about the ethics of IG influencing as a phenomenon itself, not in influencers on a personal or individual level (I haven't heard of half of them mentioned on these threads anyway and have little interest in instamums - I find looking at pictures of other people's children a bit dull/strange concept anyway)

FlyingBird · 02/06/2018 23:38

Wearelocal - I mean that I better understand how IG works mechanically and what can be good about it. Each social media platform has pros and cons depending on what sort of vibe you like and how you use it. I’m an avid Twitter user and IG is a different kettle of fish ... i. e. it’s a branded kettle made by a small business and some of the fish are #gifted Grin*

  • (sorry couldn’t resist that obvious joke. Easy to mock Twitter too of course)
Wearelocal · 02/06/2018 23:42

Thank you for replying FlyingBird. I understand. I am still a bit baffled by it. I'm sticking to interiors accounts with low followings. I'm more interested in grouting tips than slick influencers Smile

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2018 11:44

SpringSprung did you remove your post? (Don’t feel you have to answer just curious)

That blog is OTT. No one has to be on social media - or just choose wisely. I can’t bear rabid bile so I don’t go on tabloid comments, the worst of IG and so in it’s pretty easy to avoid the dregs of the Internet

Also this pride in numbers, I have 20k compared to their 10 line. As if it’s a big thing. It’s totally meaningless.

SpringSprangSprung · 03/06/2018 11:57

Yes I did. I thought it might have sounded a little harsh and it was not my intention to lecture anyone....... I probably am too invested in this whole thing, I am the mother of older teenagers and I see at first hand how peer pressure works on IG. My dc will not allow me to post their photos or even tag them on social media and yet it seems a message that is lost on these "influencers". I have been happily re-reading the petite anglaise blog, which are still online and, even 10-12 years ago, she protected her dc's identity. As I said last night, I am bowing out, at least for a while. The arguments have all been made and I suspect these children will sadly continue to be spread all over the internet. Too sad.

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2018 12:18

Fair enough makes sense.
It might start changing back the other way. I really hope so

Boredandtired · 03/06/2018 12:23

@springsprangsprung I dont think they'll be reading anyway. There's absolutely no need to have a 'comeback' other than personal choice to want the fame and money it brings so if very much imagine a slicker account and not getting over involved in discussion like this. I also would hazard a guess that the husband of that account is heavily invested in numerous ads and the children have already been signed up so even if the mother had an opposing viewpoint it's likely to be overridden as the instafather is going nowhere and clearly doesn't have an issue with anything he's posted or posting. They've sort of trapped themselves.

Wearelocal · 03/06/2018 13:05

I just read the c and c blog. What self indulgent nonsense. I hope all these folk stay deactivated from what I've heard of them.

Wearelocal · 03/06/2018 18:43

By the way how cool is Laura Hesketh of #modgate fame! And how uncool is FOD's story with child walking through field with headphones on looking at screen Confused

Wearelocal · 03/06/2018 20:40

I really like Clemmie Telford's most recent post. Good for her. That's positive 'influencing'.

Wearelocal · 05/06/2018 16:18

Candice Brathwaite 👏🏻 I'm not hating the Hay influencers at all. People with things to say, yay.

Celticmombella · 09/06/2018 01:57

I thought the same.. But then I started questioning myself.. Glad it's not just me

Celticmombella · 09/06/2018 02:01

@wearelocal last reply was about c and Cs blog... I found it hard to read... I thought it was just me. I was questioni grateful what was written but found d it very one sided. Glad it's not just me

NotAgainYoda · 09/06/2018 02:02

OP

No, I don't hate instagram influencers

I've got literally no idea what you are talking about, mind you

MsFortunaMajor · 09/06/2018 11:41

A blogger I follow on Instagram is currently on holiday, heavily promoting the travel company in countless posts, but not disclosing that the holiday is sponsored or an ad. One of her followers asked if it was as ad and she said she wasn't getting paid for it. The holiday is payment in kind, isn't it? I am disappointed that it is not being made clear that the holiday is sponsored content/an ad. I just want transparency and honesty.

Wearelocal · 09/06/2018 13:00

Interesting that DLAM is not sharing her baby's name on Instagram. I think everyone is starting to have a proper think about what they are sharing to thousands of strangers.

CadyHeron · 09/06/2018 15:38

Yes, holidays would class as payment in kind, and they should say so if they are in collaboration with someone to post for them.

poppytosh · 09/06/2018 17:59

The meldrum have "taken over" the neilson Instagram page today, no ref to payment, ad, sponsorship anything. Also no mention of the sickness bug they have potentially spread about as the husband was back in the pool and at the restaurant the next day🤢
