To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

@beautybox, until such time as having an IG AND and an MN account is a stipulation for posting here; I will just eradicate your query from my mind; continuing to post as I see fit. Interesting, that you feel the need to impose a hierarchical structure to individual posters.....who has the 'greatest right' to post at the moment? Is this a fluid structure; different posters holding 'greatest right to post' at different times? Is this sufficient to demonstrate the completely ridiculous nature of your post? I can break it down further if required; on the assumption that my position in the strata permits this.

BeautyBox · 12/06/2018 12:49

@m5slowdown - your argument is we have no place discussing if we are not followers of the accounts. I disagree as we are consumers of the brands. You're not a follower of those accounts either (a given as you have no instagram presence - remember, YOUR self imposed hierarchy). Using your logic someone who uses Instagram has more to add on this topic than someone who doesn't use Instagram at all (you).

So if anyone should be leaving this topic well alone it's you. Keep up.

As an aside, are you putting your posts through a google thesaurus a la Joey Tribiani because they're a ball ache to read

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 12/06/2018 12:52

Missed the bit about M5 not having an IG profile. That's a lie. They have already discussed accounts they follow and I'd say it was fairly obvious to most of us they're an instamum or very close to one.

I'm really tired of their attempts to shut down conversation too and their refusal to say why they are so passionate about doing so and who they really are. At least some of the other IGers who've come on earlier threads have said who they are. But then again, we all know some of the instamums aren't too hot on transparency.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 12:53

@Babaloo88, "He sure thinks he is the founder of Father's Day (FD) isn't he?" You proceed to hold FOD responsible for the hoards of grown women/men asking for FOD's advice for FD gifts. Unless you have sight of FOD inviting people to issue advice; how he is culpable for hundreds of grown women/men. I don't get it....just another bitchfest really. So immature, lacking critical thought and or any modicum of intelligence really.

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 12:57

Where are all these requests for advice? Because I didn't see any.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 12:58

@beautybox you have no place discussing selling on of gifts, earnings of IGers and or how IGers choose to raise their children. Go all out on ad transparency; I do not recall suggesting this is not valid discussion; it would be nice if this is limited to general scenarios and refrains from bitching and judging. Miracles do happen!

Babaloo88 · 12/06/2018 12:59

@m5 awww I bet you are a lovely person in real life

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 12:59

Beautybox can discuss whatever they want, unless she breaches TGs. There you go again, trying to control things you can't control.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 13:12

Equally invalid as a topic for discussion in this thread. Grin

BeautyBox · 12/06/2018 13:13

@m5slowdown - Are you really multiple people commenting under one account? You don't seem to have any recollecting of things you've said moments earlier.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 12/06/2018 13:16

Do you want us to go back to talking about the meldrums, M5? You enjoyed that didn't you? I see they're still on holiday. Kids and baby in the kids club all day. Travelling and adventuring and learning so much more than they could at school, I'm sure. How wonderful for them. How's the weather in Greece?

HebeMumsnet · 12/06/2018 13:18

Afternoon, everyone. Just a polite request to get this thread back on track, please. If it turns into a bunfight we will have to remove it, which would be a shame when there was so much interesting discussion at the start.

We will delete any personal attacks on the thread, and would also ask you not to try to 'out' anyone here - it's not really in the spirit.

On a similar note, if we do have any influencers here, lurking, we would point out that other influencers have actually found it helpful and positive to 'declare themselves' on a thread and engage with their followers in conversation here, so don't be shy. Not a must by any means, but it has been beneficial for both sides of the debate in the past.

Thanks, everyone, for your cooperation.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 13:32

Hebemumsnet M5slowdown is making it a bun fight. The moderation of this thread is a joke.

stilldazed · 12/06/2018 13:35

Hebemumsnet is AIBU to hate jo wiley a personal attack?

CadyHeron · 12/06/2018 13:49

Oh come off it, tvcabinet. I'm sorry but it's always the way these threads go. Nothing to do with m5.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 13:50

I'm with you BeautyBox. I only came on the thread because of the horrible behaviour I witnessed while watching the thread yesterday. I suggest MN review the posts again. The interpretation and implementation of the talk guidelines is clearly quite flexible. These threads shouldn't be silenced by bullying.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 12/06/2018 13:53

Completely the fault of M5. Read the thread and it's pretty obvious.

I can only apologise for outing them though. It was just a measured guess. I'll not be entertaining any of their comments any further anyway.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 13:56

@beautybox this comment represents neither discussion of ethics, ASA guidelines nor 'shady goings on'; which I am interpreting as IG advertising and or child monetising activity? Your pledge earlier was to "keep discussing the ethics, ASA breaches and shady goings on".

I have now narrowed you down to one IGer from your use of language m5. I shall not engage with you any further. I do and would never follow you, rest assured.

K'in ell, we're down to "you must be an IGer again" but now been ramped up a whole other notch to actually sit and try and deduce.
Does it matter? I don't care who's posting.

CadyHeron · 12/06/2018 14:00

tvcabinet - no engaging but a personal attack thrown in? Ok, not sure how that works. FYI I haven't been on the thread since about this morning as I've had a nice day out, thank you.
Not that it's really anyone's concern.

CadyHeron · 12/06/2018 14:00

since about 8 this morning that should read

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 14:01

@tvcabinet your 'concern' (abuse dressed up as 'care' essentially) is thoroughly misguided. My location has no relevance to the content of my posts. However, gratified for the concern nonetheless.

CadyHeron · 12/06/2018 14:06

That's just it, m5 - what on earth has someone's location or what their opinion is got to do with anything?
Nothing, that's what.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 14:23

I have watched these threads and others related to SM for a while. I have unfollowed many feeds on IG and changed my account to private, as a consequence. I am in a better position now to advise my children and students. The good news is that the brighter kids are pretty wise to the insidious advertising and their ownership of their images, but less able children are not. The brands have a lot to answer for. The IGers, youtubers etc. are just opportunists. Unfortunately, discussing the brands just gives them more exposure.
