To think Mumsnet doesn't hate Instagram influencers?

And for prominent influencers who I will not name here for fear of them kicking off and getting the thread pulled to even hint that this might be the case is irresponsible on their part?

SO much gets discussed on MN every day. So much gets criticised. Social media influencers are a new and intriguing phenomenon - why wouldn't they be discussed here? For better or worse?

Many people have supported influencers for the way they earn money. That gets ignored. Many have politely criticised and pointed out ways it could be more ethical. This gets ignored. One or two have made comments that are personal or cross the line, these have been pounced on and discussed publicly.

The 'arguments' die down. People stop caring. Then prominent influencers go and start the whole thing up again.

Blaming MN is just lazy and irresponsible.

Foddersday lolz

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 09:40

Broadly, if something is provided for free (i.e. genuinely gifted) the donor is not expected to receive anything in return and the recipient is not obliged to do anything (or refrain from doing anything - e.g. selling the gift on), nor give anything in return for what has been supplied. The question is, are influencers receiving genuine gifts? Unlikely, if the motivation behind the gift is to promote the brand and let's face it, given the amount of regulation surrounding this practice, unless required, you just wouldn't advertise the gift and simply quietly enjoy what you have fortuitously come across. In this context, there is a commercial relationship and this does warrant scrutiny. I am not concerned however, in general terms, that gifts are being sold on. For every one that does; there will be several that don't. This is for the donors to regulate; which may extend to making a note not to gift to influencers whom sell on their products. Selling on however, could prove further exposure for brands when the purchaser gushes that s/he acquired a hunza.g swimsuit for a fraction of the rrp.

I'm a bit disappointed for MP that her discount isn't bigger. She's a legitimate journalist. What passes as writing from some of the others wouldn't even get them through year 6 SATs.

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 09:59

Selling on for a fraction of the price devalues the brand, M5. I can't imagine any brand being happy with that.

Also wholeheartedly agree about the MP discount. Way too low.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 10:01

I absolutely agree; as I said, the selling on of gifts is for the brand(s) to address and they will, because they need to make money.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 10:02

I don't really understand why you are still here M5. You have changed persona (if not name), been really aggressive - I think at least one poster has gone since your attacks, and you made a bit of a fool of yourself with the 13 poster last night. I wonder if MN is humouring you because you are an IG influencer. You don't seem to be playing by the talk guidelines from my reading of them.

and why are mumsnet so touchy about these thread but let a thread titled I hate jo wiley fly Confused

Babaloo88 · 12/06/2018 10:15

He sure thinks he is the founder of Father’s Day isn’t he? Why will grown women/men message a total stranger to ask what to get their fathers for Father’s Day? also, if he is like the ‘average clueless dad’ he wouldn’t have his skincare bottles so neatly in their packets hahaha! Just find it so hiliarious that he thinks he can just not declare any gifted/ads items, like he is above everyone. Ok, I’m glad I got that off my chest. Now time to put my ‘strong girls club’ tshirt on and tackle motherhood like a boss...

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 10:19

This is absolute bare bitching and reductive towards World Child Labour Day (WCLD). You ought to be ashamed of yourself. WCLD is designed to highlight the plight of children in utterly different circumstances to those the Meldrum children find themselves. If it’s WCLD, ask how come 2 lakhs children are toiling for bread in India.....THIS....this is what WCLD is designed to promote and eradicate; not children in the UK enjoying a rather nice middle class life with all the trappings this brings - good for them.

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 10:25

OMG it was clearly a joke, M5. Don't be so touchy.

EeebyMum · 12/06/2018 10:26

M5 you are boring

stilldazed · 12/06/2018 10:28

I was joking....sorry, I really didn't want to offend anyone.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 10:30

The only talk guidelines I could imagine I am breaching is those that state: (1) must criticise MOFOD relentlessly; (2) question everything brands do and assume said brands are incapable of managing issues such as selling on of gifts alone; (3) bitch about the Meldrums (a minimum of every second post); (4) speculate regarding NB and her return to IG; (5) develop an unhealthy and increasingly obsessive interest in the income of IGers; (6) praise and uplift MP; and (7) name MOFOD, NB, MP, Meldrums, but not anyone else, cos., you know, we wouldn't want to create the perception that we are targeting certain IGers. Yup, I am in breach of those talk guidelines. Lets allow MN to arbitrate eh? In its sole official capacity as moderator of these boards. Unless of course, you are officially working as an MN moderator?

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 10:40

You've already breached the rule on personal attacks several times.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 10:41

I ❤️ MP Grin

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 10:45

And spamming, I thought.

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 10:46

*Let's M5 Wink

stilldazed · 12/06/2018 10:48

myothernamewasfunnier an actual thread called 'to hate jo wiley'....not personal enough?????

why is that ok, but somebody using a named example of an IG taking their kids out of school to film them advertising a holiday, in order to discuss the ethics of the situation, is not allowed??

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 10:49

Apostrophes are so important, don't you think.

m5slowdown · 12/06/2018 10:58

@tvcabinet, I am encouraged that is the only comment and or refutation you are capable of providing to my post. Thank you; I will take your silence in respect of the remainder as assent. Grin

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 11:01

"Refutation" bless you m5 Grin

Tvcabinet · 12/06/2018 11:20

Seriously though, isn't MP an example of getting it right? She has made mistakes -(Hello/Next) and been unclear about her Flexible campaign, but she responded positively and transparently to criticism and engaged with people, here and on her feed. As previously pointed out, MNers and IG 'followers' are the same audience, and the same potential consumers. If IG is your business, get it right.

myothernamewasfunnier · 12/06/2018 11:20

Sorry StillDazed, I wasn't referring to you. As far as I know you haven't had any posts deleted.

TaytoAllDay · 12/06/2018 11:26

My best friend is an influencer, she is the most thoughtful & caring person I know.
I don't understand why people don't like influencers to be honest, they are just normal people. Getting paid doing something they enjoy.
Wish I could get paid to do something I love.
