I hate Surrey

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 08:14

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

I'm going to defend Guildford as its my workplace. Its a pretty average town with terrible traffic but ...

I think the University of Surrey is a great university which brings some really fascinating and interesting businesses to the area and attracts people from all round the world to come study here or do research or further their education career by being a professor at a UK university for a few years.

My cousin from Ireland was asking a girl where she was from, repeatedly, because every time she asked, the girl said 'Sawwy?'

Live in one of the places mentioned above which is quite a rich place but we didn’t grow up rich at all! Sadly most are obsessed with house prices as our lovely little villages are being turned into small towers. Every house knocked down has at least 2 if not 4 built to replace it and green belt has had the go ahead to put hundreds of houses on yet the nhs is struggling, roads and train stations a nightmare etc. It dominates a lot of conversation. Saying that my friends and I never talk about house prices except to moan we could never afford to buy in this area.

Surrey isn’t perfect and crime happens everywhere but yesterday I read the article someone posted about living in a poor area where there’s a legal red light zone, talked about the suffering of everyone and the crime. I felt so grateful to live in Surrey where I can go out alone at night without fear and where most people grow up with opportunity and hope. Saying that the local Waitrose (I’m not a Waitrose shopper but go in very occasionally) makes me sad, food bank collection with massive Chelsea footballers and all sorts of rich peoples cars parked in the car park. It’s odd being in an area with such a huge wealth divide

DaisyDreaming · 30/05/2018 11:12

Also the hospitals aren’t perfect and are struggling but those I know with cancer in our area are getting so much better treatment than friends in a different area of the country. It’s not even the drug postcode lottery you hear about but even basic stuff. I worry my friends dad chances of survival are lower because of how his local hospital have dealt with his cancer and following issues

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 30/05/2018 11:32

For anyone slagging off Guildford, I am not rich but I frigging love it there and happily lived there once. Sadly, it has changed now and it’s a bit indentikit- same shops and coffee shop chains as many other places. That’s all that’s wrong with it tbh. But, it also has a lot going on there culturally- gig and theatre wise, and it is not all mansions, believe me. My lovely friend lives on a shitty estate near the hospital.

There are twats everywhere, particularly ones who’ve come in and driven up the house prices. Sadly, my friends bought places there before the prices went nuts, and I’ll probably never be able to buy unless left something in my relatives’ wills one day!

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 30/05/2018 12:44

This thread is showing that there are twats everywhere quite nicely.

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 30/05/2018 12:47

I know serveral housewives there, all on anti depressants with husbands that have affairs....

HollyGibney · 30/05/2018 13:06

I did my basic training (army) in Guildford, the WRAC training depot was there for many years. I think it's gone now to make way for houses. I've always had a soft spot for the place but obviously my time there was under different circumstances.

sweatylemon · 30/05/2018 14:02

Those who are slagging off Surrey.
I think it is the people you are slagging off rather than the place.
Let's be honest there are some dreadful places in the Uk, far uglier far less cosmopolitan and with dreadful transport links etc.
You are slagging of the Surrey housewives because.
They can choose to work or not
They are richer than you
They have great houses
They are not fat
They are privately educated
Their kids are privately educated
They look stunning
Wear great clothes
Speak very well
Can hold an interesting conversation
In any subject because they are well educated
They are very very confident
They are well travelled
Did I mention about them not being fat? neither are their kids
They can have nights out to great places.
Etc etc.
I think I can sense a smidge of jealousy?.....no???

Uyulala · 30/05/2018 14:37

sweatylemon

Not met a single one of those Surrey housewives in my 22 years of being in Surrey Confused.

Uyulala · 30/05/2018 14:38

Speak very well

Really? The ones I know speak Estruary English or Cockney Grin not much RP around.

SwimmingKaren · 30/05/2018 15:01

Have been weak at this thread. Two of my friends moved out to Surrey from London last year and overnight became these kinds of people when they never were before. They’ve just bought a range rather than a jag though. We torment them but it’s all in good fun. Grin

DrScully · 30/05/2018 15:26

@sweatylemon 😂😂😂 are you Petunia Dursley?

No one’s jealous of you my dear. Sorry.

SluttyButty · 30/05/2018 15:29

sweaty your post is absolutely hilarious 😂

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 30/05/2018 15:37

@RebeccaBunchLawyer- I agree. But I would argue that there's still a broad range on Guildford High Street.

@ScipioAfricanus ummm.... Guildford is quite friendly, try Farnham is you want judgement.

nursy1 · 30/05/2018 16:11

sweaty
And your list of what’s “important” rather proves the points others make.
“ they are not fat, they are privately educated”. 😂😂😂must be good people eh?

BettyBeer · 30/05/2018 16:13

Can hold an interesting conversation
In any subject because they are well educated

Sweaty really? The whole point of my post was that they talk about nothing but house prices and schools! And the rest of what you said is toss too but you know that Smile

I live in Kingston which is geographically Surrey but also a London Borough. Am I a greedy self important twat or not OP?

Where I grew up I was just inside the Hampshire border but a 3 min drive took me to Surrey. Should I thank my lucky stars that a mile and a postcode saved me from growing up in the wrong place according to you?

Your attitude is as twattish as those Surrey residents you claim to detest.

BettyBeer · 30/05/2018 16:30

Sorry for being twattish iloveantiques.

I don't know if you are a greedy self important twat but I did used to go to a great pub in Kingston called The Grey Horse I think... lots of bands played there. A very very long time ago though.

OP posts:
BettyBeer · 30/05/2018 16:30

Is it still there?

I live in Surrey and bloody love it. Prior to this we lived in a teeny house in 1 of the most sought after areas in London with a backyard you couldn't swing a cat in with dozens of houses crammed around /opposite us and just more bricks and more windows peering at you everywhere we looked. London feels totally crowded and claustrophobic to me now.
I love sitting on my train back home each night, gardens getting bigger, parks more green, roads less busy every station we race through, home in 30 mins to a lovely house with space and a massive garden without another house in sight down the end peering over at us. Amazing local state schools within walking distance. Lovely bustling towns/villages. Wonderful (non chain) local restaurants and pubs. Ability to drive for 10 mins and be in the most stunning countryside. Cheery, quirky people ( I find). Definitely more obsession with house prices in London then Surrey,

chickydoo · 30/05/2018 16:57

I think Surrey is great. Lovely people, lots to do, close to London, close to the airports. Brighton on the other hand is pretty grim. Very dirty, and full of middle age women trying soooo hard to be hippies. The parking is awful too, and so much dog shit everywhere!

nursy1 · 30/05/2018 17:03

betty
I think there is enough responses now to totally bear our your summary of Surrey. Reasonable people yes, a few but the majority are self important twats

kettlepotblack · 30/05/2018 17:16

Well that's it then.

The Great 'Nursy' has spoken.

mintich · 30/05/2018 17:24

Essex is much the same.... maybe it's not the areas but just that people in general are obsessed with property prices, status etc
