I hate Surrey

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 08:14

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

Can you imagine the outrage if someone had posted how much they hated Yorkshire?

Wouldn’t happen . Yorkshire is far more diverse and / well it wouldn’t happen

I know exactly what OP means

IHeartKingThistle · 29/05/2018 22:36

@RebeccaBunchLawyer you need to be somewhere not very multicultural?

I teach adults across Surrey and have met so many wonderful people from all over the world who live here and raise their children here. I'm sorry you feel like that.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/05/2018 23:10

I love Guildford! I love the shops and I've found it much friendlier than Farnham or Dorking. How is it a shit-hole? Dorking also has three equally crap stations and rumour has it that it tried to cede from the county!

diamantegal · 29/05/2018 23:38

I live in of the posh bits of Surrey, and DS is at private school with lots of children with SAHMs with big 4x4s (although I buck the trend by working and driving a Corsa). I love it. Yes, the people are generally well-off, but those that I'm friends with are not at all snobby - and if I needed help, I know they'd drop everything to come round. We've just come back from the pub quiz - great community very, lots of banter between everyone and just a generally welcoming atmosphere.

So no, it may not be for everyone. But if you don't like it, leave Surrey for those of us that do and we'll all be happy.

And no, I don't vote for Michael Gove or Jeremy Hunt - different area!

NightRaven52 · 29/05/2018 23:40

I have lived in Surrey for pretty much my entire life and I hate it too! There is very much a noticeable class divide around our way and has been for as long as I remember. Even at school age there was a sense of snobbery over what side of the A30 you lived on

nursy1 · 29/05/2018 23:46

Funny. Most of the Surrey supporters on here think it’s critics are all motivated by jealousy, not having enough money. Says it all really.

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 23:50

Most people I know who live on Surrey don't vote Conservative. Depends.

LookAtThatCritter · 30/05/2018 00:20

Of course YANBU. I find the friendly people and lack of chavs insufferable. Don’t even get me started on the beautiful scenery. Jeez.

RomeoBunny · 30/05/2018 00:24

Guildford is vile.

springsummer12 · 30/05/2018 00:33

Hahaha OP your family r just posh. Get yourself down to the Sun in Redhill and you’ll see the real Surrey! Oh please do come back to tell us how you find that experience

Bugjune · 30/05/2018 01:10

I agree @nursy1, their attitude is very revealing.

ShastaBeast · 30/05/2018 01:41

We were looking to move out of London and visited a Surrey town. The estate agent was so snobby it put me off, we looked at Hampshire instead, much more friendly and accessible. Although we stuck to London in the end which is more expensive but not so snobby strangely. The London bits are different but definitely still have a snobbery about them. You can’t live in these places unless you are on a super high income or inherited a stash so it makes sense. And high income roles usually require high self confidence/belief you are better or worth it.

MemyselfandIrene2 · 30/05/2018 07:36

I just found all those far flung Surrey towns quite boring and aimed at the 50+ which is fine if you are 50+.

Deep Kent is very pretty and seems to have that edge over Surrey in a way I can’t explain.

I live around 30 mins from Boxhill and I never really get the big deal about it. Apart from being really high up there isn’t an amazing view to look out to just flat land. As I said up thread Dorking and Reigate are boring towns yet the people that live there act as if they live in Richmond!

boomboom12 · 30/05/2018 08:45

Yeah I really like Kent

user1499173618 · 30/05/2018 09:13

Kent is a very large county that is culturally quite isolated from the rest of the provincial South East because of its huge maritime border and the physical obstruction of London. This preserves its rural and traditional identity. It also lacks major towns, which of themselves can be culturally quite defining.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/05/2018 10:07

Quite interesting how many of the defence responses suggest that people who don’t like Surrey probably can’t afford a nice house there and are therefore jealous (of the exciting luxury lives they cannot share)! That is very indicative of the snobby attitude that the OP dislikes the county for so you are really proving her point for her with a response like that.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/05/2018 10:08

Ha having had some coffee I see nursy already made this point - sorry!

WittyJack · 30/05/2018 10:11

I don't hate Surrey, but I wouldn't choose to live there (although people who pronounce it "sarry" need to be drowned in their own gin and tonic).

But then, I'm from Cheshire, so I would say that, wouldn't I?! Grin

YoThePussy · 30/05/2018 10:18

What I really love about my little market town in Surrey (near to Dorkiing and Box Hill which are both great) is that the coffee shops do not pander to the twattiness of babychinos. If you aren’t old enough for coffee, cold milk or water is your lot seems to be the attitude from owners. There is a also cat that sits outside the supermarket most days and inspects peoples shopping and most people smile and say hello.

CheeseyToast · 30/05/2018 10:21

OP made me laugh. I'll hate Surrey right along with you. Solidarity 👍

Only. There are Surreys all over the fecking world, pockets of house-price, paving, and school zone-obsessed boring greedy bastards.

That1950sMum · 30/05/2018 10:28

All it proves is that there are some people like that in Surrey just as there are some people like that in every county. You'll always get a few idiots wherever you live but it is very unfair to imply that the entire county is populated with them.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/05/2018 10:35

Perhaps, perhaps. I’ve met more of them down here than I did where I was brought up, though there were pockets of them there too. I come from a place which is routinely stereotyped and maligned so I take it and dish it out with a pinch of salt.

MemyselfandIrene2 · 30/05/2018 10:36

The place is riddled with twats.

Uyulala · 30/05/2018 10:36

Get yourself down to the Sun in Redhill and you’ll see the real Surrey

Or go to Court Lodge in Horley Grin

ScipioAfricanus · 30/05/2018 10:37

The only place I’ve been where the women look at you with such disdain as in Guildford High Street is Florence. I don’t speak the language well enough to know if their conversations and concerns are similar too.
