I hate Surrey

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 08:14

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

@tinkobell we may well be living in the same area!
Do you think they will solve the local murders soon? I could throw a stone from my house ( badly) and sadly hit the place where each victim was found Sad

MissMildred · 31/05/2018 20:57

It's a sweeping generalisation but I think you are 80% reasonable Smile
Problem is that a lot of people in Surrey are people who have moved out from London for the space, schools and safety. They have a bit more money to play with and therefore become school, property and interior design-obsessed. Many are very pleased with themselves. There are some very shiny 'country clothes' out and about on a weekend because, well, that's what you do now that you're all 'rural'. Some places are better than others for normality and there are also some very lovely people too.

I stick up for Surrey but I'm sorry, this is true GrinGrinGrin

Gromit78 · 31/05/2018 21:49

My folks live in Surrey and I grew up there. Granted it is very middle class in places, but I wouldn't judge people for that. My folks are very down-to-earth peasants.

I live in Norfolk now and I wouldn't move back because of the stupid house prices. I have a three bedroom house here. I wouldn't get a 1 bedroom flat for what my house is worth in Surrey.

chickydoo · 31/05/2018 22:11

The postcode for HC is a KT postcode. It is in the borough of Kingston upon Thames not Richmond

chickydoo · 31/05/2018 22:14

Stillnotready
Please see post below HC is in Surrey Borough of Kingston upon Thames, not Richmond

Stillnotready · 31/05/2018 22:19

No, it is Richmond, but just on the border. I really do know this! Post codes are irrelevant by the way when it comes to council tax contributions.

And Kingston is now a London borough, not one of Surrey’s eleven. These happen to be: Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Tandridge, Waverley, Guildford, Woking, Surrey Heath, Spelthorne, and finally Runnymede.
I know my Surrey 😉

Stillnotready · 31/05/2018 22:35

However, Surrey’s County Hall is still located in Kingston, and a mighty fine building it is too, often seen on TV and film as a court room location.

Jeremy71 · 31/05/2018 22:40

@SluttyButty - if you won the lottery, would you move to a bigger house in a nicer neighbourhood, or stay where you currently live?

Jeremy71 · 31/05/2018 22:48

@BettyBeer - I think you might be a little jealous of your family that live in nicer parts. Come on, let's be honest Wink

BettyBeer · 01/06/2018 07:29

@Jeremy71 I think you might be trying to wind me up now. Grin

I left Surrey as soon as I could. I travelled and worked in various countries and then I chose to live in Brighton and Hove. House prices are on a par with Surrey so I could live in those 'nicer parts' if I wanted to. God I would hate it though.
Last week I went to a few gigs that were part of the wonderful Brighton Fringe Festival - circus, Music and comedy. I could walk home from them all with my lovely friends who don't talk about extensions Smile

Betty - you are describing a lifestyle and taste quite specific to Brighton. There's plenty of other places that don't offer those festivals and that kind of lifestyle. You can't slam Surrey because it's not like Brighton in that way. People choose to live in Brighton because they know what goes with the territory, you're slagging of a whole County for not being like Brighton. Brighton is many people's idea of hell. That's why everywhere is different and there is a person with quite a specific type of taste who loves Brighton. It's like slagging off Cornwall for not being like Manchester.

BettyBeer · 01/06/2018 08:53

That's true Kettle.

My original post was about the people's attitudes. Several people have said that I, and others, are jealous of people who live in Surrey. I was simply stating why, for me, that is not the case.
I love the UK and its diversity, Cornwall is great, Manchester is great, Surrey is beautiful but I find the people to be up their own arses and obsessed with money and everything else that has already been mentioned. I'm sure this isn't everyone and I still have a couple of lovely friends there.

Just sounds typical of the British Nouveau Riche.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 01/06/2018 10:57

anyway once you have lived in Brighton for a few years, you will find out that it is a dark and deeply sleazy place. Just saying.

JosieJasper · 02/06/2018 09:06

Every city has an element of that but on the whole Brighton and Hove are great places to grow up as there is always lots going on. You have the sea, the downs, great nightlife FourFried, you've obviously been hanging out in the wrong areas!

Kettlepotblack · 02/06/2018 09:20

Yes but I felt the post has become a slagging off Surrey for what it offers (or rather doesn't) thread, rather than what the people are like. You're saying you'd much rather live in Brighton because you can go to gigs and festivals, but Brighton is rather 'niche' in that way. You might as well slag, I don't know, Norfolk off for not being like Brighton, or anywhere else. You just happened to have lived in Surrey before. People who like the lifestyle you have chosen, are less likely to be the type to live in Surrey - you can't compare and slag it off for that. It sounds like because you are so the opposite to the 'Surrey type' it's reinforced it for you, but that doesn't mean Surrey is awful as such. But on a side note, do you really think people with wealth would live in Surrey if it didn't have something to offer?!

It's is full of South West Londoners who've bought a 'country pile' and work in the City. It's full of the middle classes. There's definitely a culture that that brings. So what? People who wants good schools and invest in property. That's why you live in Brighton. I don't get why you're hating it - you've moved because you don't like that lifestyle, so what s the problem?!

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 02/06/2018 11:19

" FourFried, you've obviously been hanging out in the wrong areas! "

this is possible of course..:)

However, the longer you stay in Brighton and Hove, the more you notice the utter sleaze...all areas...:)

Tinkobell · 02/06/2018 11:26

I’m not crazy about the counties of Lincolnshire and Staffordshire....but I bet there’s some super people there and those places have many merits and nice things to see & do. Most people who say they hate ‘Surrey types’ probably don’t actually know that many, properlly. They just dislike the idea of greedy grabber people and I get that.

RidingMyBike · 02/06/2018 14:20

LOL I dream of living in Lincolnshire but no jobs so I'm stuck in Surrey ;-)

JosieJasper · 03/06/2018 16:07

FourFried. Born and bred so been here a fair old while now Grin I actually find it funny that someone would slate Surrey and live here as there are plenty of very wealthy areas with very middle class people (loads from London here too Hmm) and not all tolerate or appreciate some of the diversity but on the whole it's accepted. I wouldn't want to move away from my part of the city but then where I am is a far cry from the city centre and I know for a fact that Surrey has areas that might be considered undesirable too, good and bad in every county!

mcqueencar · 03/06/2018 22:23

I confess to not really seeing the appeal of Surrey, yes there are nice pubs & lovely countryside & good transport links. A few friends have moved out from SW London & their money has gone further but I can’t see myself following.

BettyBeer · 25/07/2018 08:04

Just wanted to pop back to say that I went to Surrey twice at the weekend, once to see friends and once to see family and apart from one short conversation about catholic schools, there was none of the chat I was anticipating about house prices, extensions, cars etc so I suppose I should take it all back!

My daughter is in Year 2 and thinking to move Banstead or Aberdour school.
I am an Indian family and wondering how is the ethnic ratio of kids.
Just little scared as she should not be left out in the group.
She is a happy little child and want to make sure feels comfortable .
