I hate Surrey

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

YABU. There are normal folk who live in Surrey too. Myself being one of them. You get the type of person you're talking about everywhere. I should know. For the person who mentioned teens scoffing at Primark, I grew up in a disadvantaged area in the north and kids would laugh at Netto carrier bags.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/05/2018 17:32

DSHathaway - I think I’d be too scared! Haven’t made it to Farnham yet - maybe I can just sense I’m not thin/well spoken/privately educated enough a la the Surrey housewives sweaty mentioned!

BettyBeer · 30/05/2018 17:35

Nursy Smile

Yes all sorted.

If you dislike it that much don't visit!

ToadOfSadness · 30/05/2018 17:47

In case anyone is thinking that Croydon is typical of Surrey it isn't, I have lived there as well as other parts of Surrey.

Croydon is also classed as London and while I would love to move back to Surrey it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near Croydon or the neighbouring area, neither would I live in Redhill, and yes I know the areas.

I want to go back to Surrey!!!

Bramble71 · 30/05/2018 17:48

I'm originally from the north-east and have always thought of Surrey as the stockbroker belt, so full of very well off types, who I think of as wanting to always go one better than the neighbours etc etc. I'm probably completely wrong but then I'm sure Surrey people have wrong impressions of us north-easterners.

Tinkobell · 30/05/2018 17:49

Oh dear. It's a clearly a thumbs down for Surrey. I live in footballers central and tbh I can concur with many of the comments made. However, being a northern lass I would say there are lots of places that are at least as annoying as Surrey across our fair land....Wilmslow, Cheshire, Harrogate, Edinburgh (in places), Alderley Edge to name a few.....It either gets under your skin or it doesn't. For what it's worth I walk about I dog chewed shoes, last had my hair dyed from a packet and have holes under the armpits of my t shirts! 😀 Ps I have never had a manicure in my life and wear 100% tk maxx

boomboom12 · 30/05/2018 17:55

One thing I’ve noticed in Surrey & other similar places is that it appears desirable to all dress identikit, I really don’t get it.

ToadOfSadness · 30/05/2018 17:56

Chelsea footballers - Cobham, used to like it there, it was known for 'Yummy Mummies'.

Biblio78 · 30/05/2018 17:59

I do know what you mean, but it does have some redeeming qualities... such as Hillcroft women's residential college in Surbiton. Where women can stay and get a second chance at higher education with an on site nursery. I wouldn't have gone back to uni with a toddler in tow without it!

SadieHH · 30/05/2018 18:01

Fuck, I'm fat, poor and dress like a bag of washing. I'd better leave Surrey asap. Which county should I go to? Let me think of some stereotypes...

Tinkobell · 30/05/2018 18:04

For what it's worth I'm sorry. Sorry for Surrey and sorry for being part of Surrey. Sorry for blighting Britain with Surrey and its iritados.

Ghostontoast · 30/05/2018 18:04

I thought Croydon CR post codes were in Surrey, and the SE postcodes to the north were in London.

Earthakitty · 30/05/2018 18:06

The utterly insane property prices in the whole Greater London area , Surrey in particular have inflated egos.
Ordinary folk are now paper millionaires.
It won't last ( it can't ) ....and one day it will all go tits up on a grand scale.
Then they'll all be wailing about their negative equity.

Strongmummy · 30/05/2018 18:06

Well Croydon is in Surrey and that’s more real and raw, however I do know what you mean. I’m from the real stock broker belt heartland of Surrey and it is like living in a bubble. The town I’m from is also filled with narrow minded, Daily Mail readers and I couldn’t wait to move away.

kettlepotblack · 30/05/2018 18:07

Yeah, saw this in the news today, happened in County Durham. Therefore this is proof that all women in the North East must be like these two...especially if a balanced Mumsnet thread entitled 'I hate the North East' concludes it.

I hate Surrey
Kikidelivers · 30/05/2018 18:09

SadieHH

Look up north

Jux · 30/05/2018 18:11

I grew up in NE Surrey and most of my friends lived in lovely places in Surrey. I hated growing up in the suburbs, but I didn't hate Surrey. Mind you, I didn't know people who spent their time obsessing about the things you're talking about.

I still know people in Surrey, friends and relatives there. They don't talk much about that stuff either. They're far more interesting.

I think maybe it's the people you know, perhaps the specific part of Surrey, just unfortunate experience particular to today only.

Most people are nice, wherever you are.

WorldWideWanderer · 30/05/2018 18:11

I lived in Surrey when I was first married, it was years and years ago. I agree with those who say it has some very odd values...everyone discussing property prices and how much they spent on things, it was perfectly normal to view someone's newly bought house and to ask exactly what they paid for it, what loans they had, what the furnishings and solicitors fees were....
There is a mix of people there; not everyone has lots of money. But the discussions were the same: money, money, money....purchases, buying stuff, bank accounts....
Sounds like it hasn't changed much then.
Fortunuately I moved away before it got to me.....

boomboom12 · 30/05/2018 18:12

Why do people get so excited about being paper millionaires, it’s only going to end up going to your kids (which it wouldn’t need to if prices were sensible) or care home so unless you sell up & live it up in the Hebrides it’s largely pointless.

Kikidelivers · 30/05/2018 18:21

Boom
Most people downsizeas they grow older. So they do benefit

boomboom12 · 30/05/2018 18:25

Of course there is a benefit but it’s not usually millions left over so I don’t see the excitement, I say this as a homeowner in my 30s with plenty of equity.

SJane72 · 30/05/2018 18:29

Yep. YANBU. It has this rep for a reason. I mean, everywhere has less posh bits but Surrey is horribly privileged with a strain of sexism particularly uncomfortable to anywhere else I’ve lived. I’m Reigate region and I crave diversity. Horrible racism in my village too. There are wonderful people and good parts too but you have to seek them out! I’m looking to move soon..

Uyulala · 30/05/2018 18:29

Well Croydon is in Surrey

Technically it's not anymore. It used to be - since approx 1965 iirc.

Uyulala · 30/05/2018 18:30

"The 1965 local government reorganisation also brought Coulsdon and Purley into the borough for the first time, since though in Surrey they were already being policed by the Metropolitan Police.

Caterham and Warlingham could have ended up in Greater London, and being part of Croydon under the plan, but that area requested an exemption that was granted by the Government.

Coulsdon and Purley requested to be left out of Croydon and Greater London too, but the Government refused. Today, these areas are perhaps those in Croydon borough that most strongly feel they are still part of Surrey."
