To wonder why nobody seems to hang pants on the washing line

I seem to be the only one who does...
Not being a creeper, just something I've noticed in the last few weeks while hanging the washing out that genuinely baffles me (shared garden, can see numerous other gardens from it.)
There's nothing better than a fresh pair of line dried pants.
I'd understand not hanging out a really scabby old pair...
Do people want to give the impression they don't wear any?

Are you sad you can't pinch them OP?

Our neighbour always hides hers behind a tree(long lines instead of a rotary), mine go on the line, from racy ones to period pants, nobody else really carea about my pants.

AnneProtheroe · 27/05/2018 17:25

Maybe the neighbours just go commando? Wink

specialsubject · 27/05/2018 17:34

not in this weather....but clearly this is another memo I didn't get...

and nor did the neighbours, all respectable and elderly and firm believers in line drying. And why not?

gillybeanz · 27/05/2018 17:35

I do but I hear my mothers voice telling me to make sure they are at the end of the line, so not visible if visitors call. Grin Bless her, she was such a Hyacinth. Only half as bad though.

user546425732 · 27/05/2018 17:37

Sadly they do - my next door neighbour has an 'aliens love underpants' tribute act going on every time the sun shines with her, her husbands and two sons pants all hanging out on the line with a peg either end displaying them in all their glory.

I do but just with one peg and near the house where they are not on full view because I don't want the neighbours being able to read the size label

Ratonastick · 27/05/2018 17:45

I used to live near a fabulous elderly lady. She swore like a trooper, drank scotch like water, told all the local “gals” to get great jobs and not bother with men or marriage and used to hang the most incredible capacious pants on a washing line that was visible to the entire village. And she didn’t give a toss about what anyone thought. She is my spirit guide in many ways, particularly laundry!

Bojangles33 · 27/05/2018 17:53

I often put pants on the airer inside because I don't have enough pegs and prefer to hang bigger stuff on the line to get it dry quicker

user546425732 · 27/05/2018 18:09

We have a pack of pegs which have a little hook at the top so they can hang from the line and so hardly take up any space. Pants and socks go on those and the normal laundry has the most space on the line then.

I do hang underwear out with everything else, but have wondered occasionally if the very few neighbours who can see the line think we're weird.

SalemBlackCat · 28/05/2018 02:49

Maybe they have the undies on the inner lines, and shielded by the sheets on the outer lines? That is how most people where I am hang out their clothes on the hills hoist.

bananafish81 · 28/05/2018 03:06

Also don't hang washing out. Everything goes in the dryer. Haven't ever done it. Washing gets done in the evenings /overnight and I can get a massive load bone dry, soft and fluffy and minimal creases in 40 mins. I can't stand crispy clothing and towels. Don't run a car or take foreign holidays in terms of my carbon footprint.

steff13 · 28/05/2018 04:37

My mom always hung laundry out when it was nice out. We tend to have hot, dry summers here, so that was often. I hated the way the laundry felt off the line. So I've never hung laundry out.

Bluesheep8 · 28/05/2018 05:33

Because mine are all old and have seen better days. Need to buy new pants!

ProjectInsanity · 28/05/2018 06:12

I don't because you can see our washing line from the school grounds and I don't feel right hanging out the family's underwear where all the school kids can see it. I do realise I am being a bit ridiculous though!

ProjectInsanity · 28/05/2018 06:14

To clarif! It's not that I think the kids would be harmed if they saw them, but DS has enough difficulties at school without other children teasing him because they can see our underwear.

SM2132 · 28/05/2018 06:18

I never hang underwear outside! I would feel weird having someone come to the house or neighbours house and seeing my knickers! My neighbour does though and I have always found it weird. Funny how opinions are divided on this. To be fair as well though, I couldn't be bothered hanging out little fiddly items anyway- I just hang out jeans, sheets, jumpers etc.

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2018 06:22

I do, but was once asked to bring them in on a Sunday when staying in a remote part of Scotland.

Fintress · 28/05/2018 06:24

I only hang my husband's out, mine take barely any time to dry so I just put them on the airer plus it's less to take off the line when it rains. I'm in Scotland too. The weather has been so nice recently it's disappointing when I have an empty laundry basket and nothing to hang out Grin.

There is nothing more joyous in Scotland than an empty laundry basket and your washing on the line as that can be a rare occasion!

londonrach · 28/05/2018 06:41

I thought everyone did. Never looked at washing of my neighbours. Why would you

brizzledrizzle · 28/05/2018 06:44

@projectinsanity, that's not ridiculous at all.

DulcetMoans · 28/05/2018 06:50

Solely because I can't be bother to get all the tiny fuckers in if it rains! I put the on a clothes horse in the garden though.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/05/2018 06:59

My holiday neighbours currently have this on their line. No pants though.

I dry mine outside but only on the Socktopus. I’ve too much washing to dry to give prime washing line real estate to underwear.
