To tell DH he is pronouncing DD’s name wrong.

DD is mainly known as a shortening of her name. Occasionally we call her the full versio. However I have noticed DH pronounces it in a different way to how I have ever heard it pronounced. I assumed there was just one pronunciation of it. I’m wondering if it would be reasonable to point it out? Or do I just live with it.

That's a bugbear of mine, Xenia, as with, "you did amazing," instead of "amazingly."
But then, I can't gloat, as I am still smarting over Beatrix/Beatrice.

Anewme2018 · 27/05/2018 11:30

How odd that you need to ask strangers if you should tell your DH. 1. It’s your husband, shouldn’t you be able to tell him anything? 2. Why didn’t you correct him when you both were sounding out names or as soon as you picked it. How he pronounces her name, seems to be to be the least of your problems...

"I pronounce it will-e-am"
Like Willy - Am"? That would drive me nuts. Will/yuhm, Will/yam or Will/yem are more usual. YABU to "correct" your DH when his pronunciation is closer to the norm than yours.

FuckingHateRain · 27/05/2018 11:33

Reminds me of my mate who never agreed with DH on names so gave their kids two names, she uses one he uses another Confused

HunterHearstHelmsley · 27/05/2018 11:34

I'm going to assume the DH is right as we don't know the name!

Usuallytootiredbuthappyanyway · 27/05/2018 11:34

My parents pronounce my name completely differently to each other. My dad is English - Home Counties and and my Mum is Glaswegian. It’s never been an issue!

liz70 · 27/05/2018 11:35

I'm in the Eveh/lyn if it's a boy, Eeveh/lyn if a girl camp.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 11:37

FuckingHateRain like Brian and Dave? What do the school use?

happypoobum · 27/05/2018 11:37

WHAT'S THE NAME??????

Tigerpaws57 · 27/05/2018 11:37

We have a Lucy in the extended family which we have always pronounced Loosy. Her new bf pronounces it Lyoosy. Is that a commonly used pronunciation?

theymademejoin · 27/05/2018 11:38

Eleanor can either be "Ellen-ah", or it can be "Ella-NORE"

I've never heard Eleanor pronounced Ellen-ah. Ellen-ur, Ellen-ir or Ella-Nore are the only ways I've heard it pronounced. But there's always an "r" sound at the end.

BettyBettyBetty · 27/05/2018 11:39

I hate threads like this- tell us the name OP so we can comment!

lastnightidreamtofpotatoes · 27/05/2018 11:39

I'm really shocked at the ll becoming a w! Wiwyum and miwk? Is this a purpose rule or does it just sound as if the ll is a w?

liz70 · 27/05/2018 11:39

"I only figured out Beatrix Potter was female a couple of years ago"

Eh? Beatrix has never been a boy's name. Confused

tillytoodles1 · 27/05/2018 11:41

theymademejoin Eleanor Rigby is pronounced Ellen-ah.

MildlyFedUp · 27/05/2018 11:41

Is it Balonz, and one of you pronounces it BAL-onz while the other says Bal-ONZ?

MiniAlphaBravo · 27/05/2018 11:41

Non rhotic accents eg south of England wouldn’t pronounce the r in Eleanor they. Same as mother or father - both have an -ah sound at the end in my accent. But my Irish family, for example, would pronounce the r.

inmyheadimthequeen · 27/05/2018 11:44

fucking hate rain 's story reminds me that I had a friend years ago whose brother had two names - Edward and Paul. Everyone including his family used them interchangeably and it's only just occured to me reading this thread that it's weird. It just never crossed my mind to question it. I know someone now as an adult who uses two names but he's a bit dodgy anyway😀

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 11:46

Tigerpaws57 I’m not sure how Lyoosy is pronounced Lee or lie?

liz70 · 27/05/2018 11:47

"I've never heard Eleanor pronounced Ellen-ah. Ellen-ur, Ellen-ir or Ella-Nore are the only ways I've heard it pronounced. But there's always an "r" sound at the end."

I say it Ellen-uh. I can't pronounce the "r" at the end of any word or name, unless I'm putting on a comedy Scots accent and saying e.g. "doo rrurrr " or "Eleano rrurr ". Which, being English living in Scotland, wouldn't make me popular!

FuckingHateRain · 27/05/2018 11:47

FuckingHateRain like Brian and Dave? What do the school use?
Yes like that, don't know what school use for either of them. All I know is that I'm confused when I go over , don't know if when I talk to the mum I should use her choice of name for them boys and the other way around... I've been corrected couple of time by her very serious DH Hmm

SayNoToCarrots · 27/05/2018 11:48

But what's your daughter's name?

Tigerpaws57 · 27/05/2018 11:51

^middle class. More lee. Like the sound in issue.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 11:52

I think the name is . and they are hipsters.

Nickname is dot but some call her full stop and others say period. It’s understandable that OP doesn’t want her child called Period.

JUST TELL US THE NAME!

GabsAlot · 27/05/2018 11:52
