To tell DH he is pronouncing DD’s name wrong.

DD is mainly known as a shortening of her name. Occasionally we call her the full versio. However I have noticed DH pronounces it in a different way to how I have ever heard it pronounced. I assumed there was just one pronunciation of it. I’m wondering if it would be reasonable to point it out? Or do I just live with it.

My parents say my name differently. I mainly use an abbreviation and always have done - they say that the same. I consider my mum's way to be 'correct' but maybe this is because she was my main carer as a child, so I heard her way more (at the Dr's, dentist, signing me up for clubs using my full name).
They have a strong marriage and I'm in my 30s. It is just an anomaly, not a sign that they don't communicate well. Don't let it worry you. Kids with parents from different towns frequently say 'castle' with a short a to one parent and carstle with a long A to the other. It's fine.

How didn't you figure this out when discussing what name to give?
Are you sure you're pronouncing the name right?

WilburIsSomePig · 27/05/2018 09:45

I know I pronounce my MIL's name wrong. I'm from a completely different part of the country to DH and his family and I've tried and tried as I don't want to disregard her name, but it sounds so weird I can't do it! She is completely lovely about it and doesn't care thank god.

Her name is Yvonne. I call her E-vonne with emphasis on the 'onne' bit but everyone else calls her Eeev-on if you know what I mean.

MiniAlphaBravo · 27/05/2018 09:46

Although I hate hearing my dd’s name pronounced as beet-rix when imo it should be bee-a-trix! This happens with people from various parts of the country so it’s not a regional difference.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 27/05/2018 09:46

I agree with PP that this has Irish name written all over it!!

I just want to know what the name is now!

DextroDependant · 27/05/2018 09:48

We need to know the name.

My ex calls my daughter kayieee ber name is Katie, it has a T, he is just lazy.

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 09:48

I thought BeatRIX was the male version and BeatRICE the female. Am I wrong then? Blush

TatianaLarina · 27/05/2018 09:50

Beatrix is female.

MiniAlphaBravo · 27/05/2018 09:51

Yes wow I’m afraid you are wrong. -ix is a female suffix in Latin words. Eg dominatrix!

kalapattar · 27/05/2018 09:52

How does your DD say her name?

That's probably the correct pronunciation.

(If she can say it)

TatianaLarina · 27/05/2018 09:53

It’s difficutl to know without the name OP.

Impossible to know whether there’s more than one pronunciation or if he’s just getting it wrong.

pieceofpurplesky · 27/05/2018 09:53

Sam u ell
Sam Yule

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/05/2018 09:54

We need to know the name to judge whether your husband is pronouncing it wrong!
Unless it's the rarest name in the world, it won't be identifying surely.

I read a whole book when I was a child convinced the main character was called Penny Lope. Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 09:55

I’ve never heard of Beatrix as a mans name before.

Beatrix and Beatrice and different like Carolyn and Caroline

VladmirsPoutine · 27/05/2018 09:56

This thread is going to drag on to 999 posts without us knowing the name and therefore settling the argument so I'd just like to get it in that unless it is a wildly random pronunciation then live and let live.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 09:56

chants

Name, name, name, NAME!

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 09:57

Name is a weird word if you say it too many times

GeekyWombat · 27/05/2018 09:57

My dad is forrin and so he and my mum pronounce my name differently to each other. The world doesn't end.

It's a bit random admittedly but surely it's just part of life's rich tapestry?

ApolloandDaphne · 27/05/2018 09:59

Well you need to tell us the name now!

Silentnighttwo · 27/05/2018 10:01

My friend had this with her parents. Her name was Juliet.

Her DM said Juli-et; her DD said Juli-ut. They are still happily married 40 years later Smile.

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 10:03

My friend is Spanish and her dd is Laura. She pronounces it Low-ra and her dh (and everyone else) Law-ra.
No one minds!

SimonBridges · 27/05/2018 10:03

Yes wow I’m afraid you are wrong. -ix is a female suffix in Latin words. Eg dominatrix!

And aviatrix for a female pilot.

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 10:03

@wowlookatyou did you not realise that Beatrix Potter was a woman?

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 10:05

Well that's the Blush part (and I've just had to google it to check). I've always thought she ought to be female, bearing in mind how the stories come across but I did actually think it was a 'he!'
So, you live and learn.

Bearhunter09 · 27/05/2018 10:06

Eminybob. Your husband is right round here
