To tell DH he is pronouncing DD’s name wrong.

DuchessOfNorfolk · 27/05/2018 08:59

DD is mainly known as a shortening of her name. Occasionally we call her the full versio. However I have noticed DH pronounces it in a different way to how I have ever heard it pronounced. I assumed there was just one pronunciation of it. I’m wondering if it would be reasonable to point it out? Or do I just live with it.

OP posts:

I wonder if it's something like Eleanor and they have been mainly calling her Ellie.

Eleanor can either be "Ellen-ah", or it can be "Ella-NORE". It's the latter in the US, Canada, Australia, NZ. It's the former in much of England (not sure about Scotland, ROI, NI or Wales).

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 10:08

WowLookAtYou Grin at this happened here rather irl x

RedDwarves · 27/05/2018 10:08

What about Felix?

TimeToDash · 27/05/2018 10:10

Maybe he thinks you pronounce it wrong. But you need to agree on it! Kid will be very confused!

Lookatyourwatchnow · 27/05/2018 10:13

Sorry OP but I think this is hilarious. How did this not come up when you chose the name?!

odig · 27/05/2018 10:14

Wow, you've given me the giggles.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2018 10:14

OP, it's not your job to correct it. He can pronounce his child's name as he likes - as can you.

... as an aside, I think I really LOVE the name 'Catastrope' (Cata-stoff) and, if I were having another child, I would give this serious consideration.

numptynuts · 27/05/2018 10:26

My DH and I have regional accents but from opposite ends of the country. We both think we pronounce names wrong Grin

EllenJanethickerknickers · 27/05/2018 10:39

My DSis is Elaine and the whole family pronounce it both ways depending on context, EE lane and ee LANE. But always Will ee ums! Grin

BitOfFun · 27/05/2018 10:47

DuchessOfNorfolk , you haven't posted before with this username, so it shouldn't compromise you in any way to tell us the actual name. It's entirely anonymous, as there's no way the name is unique.

JUST TELL US THE NAME!

ReanimatedMuse · 27/05/2018 10:52

Where I am in West London William is definitely pronounced will - yum. Like the prince Wink

I would argue that is the correct pronunciation.

Jengnr · 27/05/2018 11:06

Will-yum sounds awful - like you can't be arsed to say the whole name so you skipped the middle.

KungFuPandaWorks · 27/05/2018 11:07

I have one of them names that can be pronounced in more than one way. I've never told the people who pronounce my name differently to how I say it, is wrong. Because it's still my name they're just putting emphasis on different part of my name than I do.

Although it annoys my DH when his Dad says my name because he adds more letters and drags my name out, I'll use Rebecca as an example.

FiL- where's Ree-Beck-Urhh
DH- Re-Beck-Ah?
FIL- Yeah, where's Ree-Beck-Urhh
DH- Its Re-Beck-Ah dad, you know it is.

Rinse and repeat.

DragonMummy1418 · 27/05/2018 11:10

Did you not talk to your DH and discuss the name out loud before the baby was born ConfusedConfused

DragonsAndCakes · 27/05/2018 11:12

I really think it would help if we know what the name is and the two pronunciations.

ReanimatedMuse · 27/05/2018 11:13

Will-yum sounds awful - like you can't be arsed to say the whole name so you skipped the middle

Upper class southern accents constrict the syllables in most words. I personally dislike long drawn out pronunciations - I think it sounds childish.

jelliebelly · 27/05/2018 11:15

How old is she? Presumably you picked the name together?

colditz · 27/05/2018 11:16

There's some true-blue raging snobbery on this thread.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 11:17

Fresh prince was Willyum.

I grew up near ReanimatedMuse and would say Will-ee-um and willyum without realising I was saying either or 😂

Sequencedress · 27/05/2018 11:20

Eleanor in Scottish would be Ellen-Ur or Ellen-Er depending on regional variation. My accent would make it the latter. But we pronounce our Rs here Grin Wink
Yvonne would be I-Von (I as in bit and Von to rhyme with Ron) quite a ‘fast’ name.
William would be Will-Yum (or oor Wullie!!)

Xenia · 27/05/2018 11:21

(Just a typo in the original post. It's "wrongly" not "wrong" .
Just like we eat "healthily", not "healthy")

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 11:23

I don’t think willyum is just an upper class thing. I think West Country can sometimes pronounce it as such just as they pronounce Margaret Margret (they = my mum and her friends)

Sequencedress · 27/05/2018 11:25

I have a relative named Rognvald which really messes with people. Grin
(Orkney spelling of Ronald)

Ankorna · 27/05/2018 11:25

Wiwyum also seems to be used for William.

I live in London and this is how I pronounce William. The double "l" becomes a "w" sound.

Its similar with the word 'milk'. I pronounce it as 'Miwk'.

AvoidingDM · 27/05/2018 11:26

Wow I'll stand beside you and confess I only figured out Beatrix Potter was female a couple of years ago. It just wasn't something I'd thought about.

Op what's the name?
