To tell DH he is pronouncing DD’s name wrong.

DD is mainly known as a shortening of her name. Occasionally we call her the full versio. However I have noticed DH pronounces it in a different way to how I have ever heard it pronounced. I assumed there was just one pronunciation of it. I’m wondering if it would be reasonable to point it out? Or do I just live with it.

sleeping...... can you spell the pronunciation of poor, paw, pour, pore please?

in my accent poor= poo-uh...
paw rhymes with claw,
pour and pore are the same and are pronounced to rhyme with door.
the difference between paw/pore...paw is like the sound you make when you see a cute baby 'awww!' and pore is like the sound you make when you are surprised 'oh!'
hopefully that makes sense Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 29/05/2018 19:55

Sooo

Poe-uh

TheOriginalEmu · 29/05/2018 19:57

middleclass....poo-uh(poor), p-oh(pore/pour), and p-aww(paw). is the best i can do without using the phonetic alphabet.

MiddleClassProblem · 29/05/2018 20:00

It’s the p-oh one I don’t get. It’s like Po from the tellytubbies?

derxa · 29/05/2018 20:01

SoyDora · 29/05/2018 20:02

Yeah I don’t get the p-oh one either. That would be Po in my accent. That can’t be right? I think I just need to hear someone say them all.

MiddleClassProblem · 29/05/2018 20:04

Yes, Emu if you could just film a quick YouTube of you saying each one followed by it in a contextual sentence that would be fab Grin

SoyDora · 29/05/2018 20:07
Grin
Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 20:08

Paw, pore, poor, pour... Sound exactly the same to me.

"My dog hurt her paw, so I'm going to get some warm water to pour on her poor paw, while simultaneously exfoliating my pores."

The same I tell you. No difference. ((Apart from the plural on pores)).

TheOriginalEmu · 29/05/2018 20:11

TheOriginalEmu · 29/05/2018 20:12

FASH84 · 29/05/2018 20:20

My parents have a story I wrote as a child (obviously with accompanying badly drawn picture), where I describe the man building our house (extension) taking lots of bricks from the lorry with a fort lift, terrible picture shows I meant fork lift, but as DF is a Londoner and I was raised in Essex t's and k's were often glottalised so I hadn't understood what he was saying when he told me what it was. Luckily a good old RG University knocked that out of me 🙄, meaning my family think I'm posh and it's making my favourite name for unborn baby feel like it might be a nightmare (Tabitha, to many of my family would be Tabiffuh). There are no right and wrong accents, just wonderful regional variation. In some ways I wish I'd been more confident in that when I was a student.

SleepingStandingUp · 29/05/2018 20:39

I cannot make any pourpoorpawpore not rhyme with claw. I'm screwed

MiddleClassProblem · 29/05/2018 20:45

Does paw and claw not rhyme in your accent?

MiddleClassProblem · 29/05/2018 20:45

How do you say claw?

happypoobum · 29/05/2018 22:08

Delphinium are you not pronouncing the "r" sounds at the end of pour and pore, or are you adding an "r" to paw? You must be doing one or the other for them all to sound the same Grin

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 22:17

happypoobum

I do not pronounce Rs on the end of words. Non-rhotic accent. Sounds like an "aw" or an "ah" (like in car for example).

I also pronounce Ls as Ws. "Trouble" becomes "trubbow". "Full" becomes "fuwh".

Come to think of it... "Fall you fool"... Both words pronounced the same.

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 22:17

As in both pronounced as "fawh you fawh" Grin

SimonBridges · 29/05/2018 22:39

Paw is p-or
Pour is p-or
Pore is p-or
Poor is p-or.

TheOriginalEmu · 29/05/2018 22:44

where are you from simon? i'd say my friends from lancashire would totally agree with you!
