To want to do a drastic diet?

Sunshinemakesmehappie · 27/05/2018 07:23

I have gained huge amounts of weight over the last two years and am now nearly 15stone.

At my height, that’s pretty large and I’m very depressed.

Wondering about doing a liquid/shake diet. Any views?

OP posts:
Lexilooo · 27/05/2018 09:37

Why not look at Michael Moseley's blood sugar diet.

He is the doctor from the BBC Horizon programmes and the diet has an initial phase that gives you a quick loss as a boost and to reset your habits then moves to a more long term sustainable version.

It is also designed to help reverse early signs of type 2 diabetes which is likely to be an issue if you are very overweight.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/05/2018 09:38

This is a really interesting thread, very useful information on it and the OP asked for VIEWS about liquid/shake diets. She should have just said, "I'm going to do a liquid/shake diet" and then possibly she would have had one or two posts. Much better.

BetterEatCheese · 27/05/2018 09:38

Re. No cooking - the blood sugar diet is very doable without cooking. It aims to cut carbs and sugar so lots of fresh fruit and veg, you can buy fish and olives ready to go, yoghurt and fruit, humous, nuts, beans, lentils, chicken you can buy ready cooked. The most you would need to do would be to boil or scramble eggs. There are options for cooked meals but you can buy most of the things ready done if you want to.

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 09:39

I think the OP has been really rude to people who have been trying to help.
So fine! Off you go to your day, OP. I won't bother telling you how I've just lost over 3 stone. I shall instead continue on my day, power walk with the dog, exercise bike and aerobics video in the privacy of my own sitting room, and a light lunch and roast dinner later on with lots of veg with fruit to follow.
Not hard to sustain, but that's how I'm slim now and keeping it all off. Denying yourself things you love won't help long-term.
But you carry on snapping at people and stay exactly where you are in terms of weight and state of mind.

BlueJava · 27/05/2018 09:39

I did Cambridge VLCD, lost 4 stone in 5 months. I found it comes off easily if you stick to it by putting only Cambridge and waterand NOTHING else in your mouth. The problem is sustaining the weight loss afterwards. I put it back on v slowly, but it did go back on.

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 09:42

And to those who said that people aren't answering the OP's question, we are. She asked for views about liquid diets. Most have said they can be effective short-term, assuming you don't mind putting all the weight back on once you stop them. And then, to be helpful, suggesting more effective ways.
What's wrong with that?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 27/05/2018 09:42

Stop making excuses and get outside. My SIL was your size 2 months ago and I started dragging her out in walks with me. She’s now 13 stone. Plus, at 15 stone she wasn’t THAT big. Certainly not fat enough for people to make comments.

BlankTimes · 27/05/2018 09:42

I do honestly believe that different diets work for different people

I think so too.

5:2 with low carb or the Blood Sugar diet will give you very quick results, be more healthy than general starvation and they are both a lifestyle change so you don't go back to bad habits.

Please do some reading about ghrelin and insulin, so you can see how your body responds to different food types.

Massive congrats to everyone who has achieved such great weight-loss, your stories are inspirational Grin

MatildaTheCat · 27/05/2018 09:43

OP your response to the very sensible question, ‘what happens after you stop the VLCD?’ was, ‘eat normally.’

There lies your problem. Your eating normally has brought you to where you are. There are many ways to lose weight but in order to keep it off you have to change your eating habits, tastes and preferences. It can be don but takes a long time. Eventually you can be that person who prefers fresh fruit salad to a stodgy pudding but it won’t happen overnight.

I wish you well because you sound really unhappy but listen to those who have advised you so well.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 27/05/2018 09:44

I find a drastic diet to boost the original weight loss is helpful for me personally because despite science, eating less and moving more just doesn't work for me, I can eat tiny amounts and do a ton of jogging/walking and other bits and the scale doesn't shift 1 iota. Everyone says not to worry about the numbers and I can understand that for people that are a few lbs overweight but I'm 3.5 stone overweight so I do worry about the numbers.
I am going to have to go drastic to start the wheels in motion of weight loss I think. I have screwed up my body by too many diets that I don't think it knows how to lose weight anymore.

WowLookAtYou · 27/05/2018 09:44

15 stone not being "that big" depends partly on your height I think. And people carry it in different ways too, so some will look just "large," whereas others will look like barrels.

BusterGonad · 27/05/2018 09:45

I lost 6lbs in one week eating 1500 cals a day, and I'm only 1 stone over weight, so if you are 5 stone over weight I imagine you'd lose more!

ppeatfruit · 27/05/2018 09:48

The problem (sorry if someone has already said this) with the liquid quick loss Cambridge type diets is that there is lot of loose skin left after you've lost all the weight. I'd prefer (and I did) lose slowly and surely, exercising , even just extra walking and or running up the stairs more is helpful.

Paul Mackenna is my friend, his way of eating REALLY WORKS. Oh and cutting right down on caffeinated/fizzy drinks.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/05/2018 09:49

Op doesn’t seem to want to heed the gall bladder warning.

MrsJamin · 27/05/2018 09:50

LARLARLAND Why is anybody bothering to help the OP?
Because without changing anything for good, OP will end up with type two diabetes. It's a shame that she's not at the point where she will take anyone's advice.

bionicnemonic · 27/05/2018 09:50

To Mummadeeze
This isn’t a diet one but could be used as a meal replacement and is dairy free

RedDwarves · 27/05/2018 09:51

I just know what works and what doesn’t

You obviously don't, because, if you did, you wouldn't weigh 15 stone.

But crack on.

callmemaybe8 · 27/05/2018 09:51

If you do something extreme you will put all the weight on again once you return to a 'normal' diet.

It's best to change your lifestyle and stick to it.

recklessruby · 27/05/2018 09:56

How quickly do you want to lose it OP? I was 15 stone 8 the year I started weight watchers in October. By July I had hit my target and below weighing 10 stone 4.
It was hard at the start but the weight does come off week by week and you get support at the meetings. You quickly learn what you can eat (everything if you point it ) and I would still have a bar of chocolate most days.saved my extra points for wine at the weekend.
I have been lazy and put on a stone and a half since then but that's my own fault and I will go back to the meetings after summer hols

hotchips · 27/05/2018 09:56

@melodybirds on an average day I eat about 1400 - 1700 calories a day. My body is fat adapted though, so can access extra energy from fat stores so that’s why I’m losing weight.

Cockmagic · 27/05/2018 09:58

You're coming across as rude op.

Walking is a good form of exercise, I weigh more than you and walk to work everyday, it does come off.
I don't understand the abuse aspect? I've never had anyone shout "fatty" at me, if they did I'd tell them to fuck off.

Fine don't do slimming world, it's not for me either.

You're already self sabotaging, I think you're expecting to find a ridiculous diet and lose weight hiding inside it doesn't work like that.

Have 3 meals a day ( healthy) no snacks. I know you said you love crisps but they're hardly worth being fat for are they? And when you lose weight you can still have them occasionally.

hotchips · 27/05/2018 10:05

@Xenia I don’t actually believe that eating fewer calories than you expend means you’ll lose weight. That argument is too reductive for people who are obese and have a deranged metabolism. It doesn’t take into account that raised insulin levels and insulin resistance stop them accessing stored fat. So it’s not just the amount of calories you eat; it’s what those calories are. White bread raises insulin more than butter for example. And also how often you eat. Little and often is fallacy created by the food industry to sell snacks.

This article by the brilliant Dr Jason Fung explains it much better than I can.

CiderwithBuda · 27/05/2018 10:10

There are a couple of VLCD threads going in Weight Loss Chat I think. And there is an article in the DM today about vlcds. Apparently they used Cambridge Diet and have had similar results to the Newcastle Uni trial of the 800 cals a day Diet. Which I think prompted Michael Mosley’s BSD diet but the original one used shakes.

From their research there is a school of thought that for some very overweight people a vlcd diet is good BECAUSE the results are fast. Looking down the road at losing five or six stone can be soul destroying. I know, I have five stone to lose. BUT you have to have a plan in place for afterwards. You CANNOT go back to your normal way of eating. Because your normal way of eating meant you ended up 5 stone overweight.

And for some people taking food out of the equation helps as then they don’t obsess about food so much. They follow the rules of two shakes and a meal every day and they don’t have to think too much about it.

FATEdestiny · 27/05/2018 10:11

How much are you looking to lose in what time frame OP?

Attached is my journey to be healthy from 1st Jan 2018 - 30th April 2018. By the end of May I should have exceeded a 5 stone loss (start weight was 17st 8.5lb, BMI 43).

I call my diet "common sense".

I don't follow a restrictive "program", I don't pay someone £5 a week to weigh me, I don't pay to exercise. I am an intelligent woman and I know what I need to focus to lose weight. So I decided now was the time to do it.

No excuses.

I eat only fresh food, lean protein and whole grain unprocessed carbs like oats and rice. This means no sugar, no unhealthy food. I don't eat breakfast because I don't feel hungry. I eat 4-5 veg portions at lunch and 4-5 veg portions st dinner. No snacking at all.

In December I was considering weight loss surgery. I genuinely believed it was not possible for me your lose weight. I'm not dieting, this is how I will always eat from now onwards. I know I'll be well within the healthy BMI range by the end of the year.

Stop giving yourself excuses.

If you're wallowing in self pity, deal with your mental health at the same time as your physical health.

To want to do a drastic diet?
Bobbybear10 · 27/05/2018 10:14

I have done a vlcd twice now.

Both times I lost weight, both times I put it back on and more.

I am now the heaviest I have ever been.

Please don’t do a shake diet. I know it’s tempting to lose a huge amount of weight in a short time, especially if like me you have so much to lose it feels like it will take forever! But I promise you it will mess up your metabolism and you will gain it back and probably more very quickly.

I have never met anyone in real life that has done a VLCD and not put it all back on within the year.

I am starting the 8 week blood sugar diet tomorrow and am hoping to get the weight off slow and steady. I need to change my eating habits and have resigned myself to the fact that my greed is what makes me fat and I can’t eat a portion of cake, half a packet of biscuits and a medium size bar of chocolate everyday! I wish I could, I love food especially ‘bad’ food but it needs to stop or I will become seriously ill, it’s amazing I’m not diabetic yet tbh.
