To think the Irish Abortion Referendum outcome will be a close call?

Polling day is within touching distance and from what I’ve seen on my social media channels, the vast majority seem to be swaying towards voting to Repeal. Do we think this is a true reflection of the majority or are the No side just less likely to be vocal on their social media channels? Whatever the outcome, I think it will be close.

What are everyone else’s thoughts?

Official result is in. Majority in favour of course, more than 1.4 million voted yes!

Only area that voted No is Donegal - which I think would have a similar attitude to people of Northern Ireland.

I’m not convinced NI would say yes in a referendum.

I was at a knitting festival of all places today, in a large venue just beside Dublin airport, and there was such joy in the room from the 95% female attendees. A 70something weaver told me how happy she was to have "kicked the priests in the arse once and for all". And the knitting legend Kate Davies got a big cheer at her talk when she mentioned what a special day it was for Irish women. Come to think of it, it was the perfect place to be today! Grin

The cheek of the Americans, they’ve got kids being shot in schools every week because they want their right to choose to own a gun, they need to spend a bit of time thinking about protecting kids that have already been born

@shins a knitting festival in Dublin!!! how did I miss that.

I'm so relieved, I was so fearful that the no vote would out. But how amazing that male and female, young and old stood together to put an end to this issue. My area was 82% yes and would have an extremely high retired population so it wasn't only the young voting yes.

@eosmum yes www.woollinn.com - brainchild of the This Is Knit ladies, it was wonderful! Going to be an annual event I think. And it was lovely to be in such an interesting, creative, mostly female space on a day like today. I even saw a handknitted Repeal jumper!

So pleased with the fantastic result.

I am so happy about this result. What a day for Ireland.

I posted early in the thread that DH was planning to vote No & that we'd been arguing about it. Well he decided in the end to abstain, which he has never done in any previous election. And he has actually apologised today, admitted that he was wrong & that he should have voted Yes.

So I won't have to LTB Wink
