To think the Irish Abortion Referendum outcome will be a close call?

Polling day is within touching distance and from what I’ve seen on my social media channels, the vast majority seem to be swaying towards voting to Repeal. Do we think this is a true reflection of the majority or are the No side just less likely to be vocal on their social media channels? Whatever the outcome, I think it will be close.

What are everyone else’s thoughts?

The majority of older people I know, some in their 8o's, are voting yes, and some of the younger people I know are voting no. Lets check our biases on this one a bit....

hownowpowpow · 25/05/2018 14:33

There are a lot of older people in the yes camp and a lot of young people in the no. That is what makes it so hard to call. God how will we wait until tomo to know. If no wins I don't know how long we would have to wait for another referendum.

Quimby · 25/05/2018 14:37

I’d guess another 30 years but who knows, the EU might press for it before that.

heateallthebuns · 25/05/2018 14:37

I know my mil in her 80s is voting yes. But I would still think there is an age bias. All the cars I see with love both stickers have old people in them.

Woodwick · 25/05/2018 14:38

Feeling a bit weepy after scrolling through the home to vote hashtag on twitter. Amazing. I really hope Ireland can do this.

Trinity66 · 25/05/2018 15:03

I think it will be really close, there was way too many undecideds to be able to call it. Fingers crossed though, just voted Yes!

Trinity66 · 25/05/2018 15:06

I was only saying to my mother yesterday though that on this one I think older women might be in favour more so because they would have seen or gone through alot of suffering to do with pregnancies.

kohl · 25/05/2018 15:28

Home to vote yes has made me sob.
I am crossing everything for the vote to be a yes.

Miami81 · 25/05/2018 16:28

@Trinity66
I think some of the older ladies you might be right. My nana was staunch catholic and very conservative, when I was around 19 her actual words were -
Aren't these condoms great for all the heartache they will avoid.
Now don't you be stupid,
Always have your own with you.
I almost dropped dead with embarrassment. Now my nana wasn't young, when I was 18 she was well into her late 70's.
But I remember thinking jees what has she seen happen around her for her to say that. How many friends disappeared off to the laundries etc. I think she would have been so proud of the repeal movement, she would have struggled with it like loads of people have, but I absolutely believe that the compassion and caring in her would have won out.

Trinity66 · 25/05/2018 16:46

Miami81 Yeah, I can't imagine what women of that age would have lived through and seen regarding crisis pregnancies and just pregnancies too, baby after baby

NotLinkedIn · 25/05/2018 16:47

On my way to vote now!

NotLinkedIn · 25/05/2018 16:49

Quimby good point. Not sure ireland should be allowed to stay as it is.

PaddyF0dder · 25/05/2018 16:56

@NotLinkedIn

“Not sure Ireland should be allowed to stay as it is”.

Can you clarify what you mean?

Trinity66 · 25/05/2018 16:57

Can you clarify what you mean?

Presumably they mean neglectful to womens healthcare

PaddyF0dder · 25/05/2018 17:01

That’s what I thought, but I just wanted the poster to clarify.

MimpiDreams · 25/05/2018 17:11

Everyone in my family is voting yes. I think some of the older women would lynch them if they didn't. Having to have a hysterectomy to avoid unwanted pregnancies is definitely a tradition they don't want to pass on to their daughters and granddaughters.

chartreuse · 25/05/2018 17:16

I think it will be yes, the turnout is very high and the no side were coming out with some ridiculous options in the last few days which makes me think the were under a lot of pressure.

My 2 oldest dc both voted for the first time, there was a huge drive to register young voters in uni's, colleges and schools. They will overwhelmingly vote yes IME, and the home to vote crowd will be a yes majority too. I'm quietly confident, but I live in a very liberal constituency so might be a bit blinkered.

PerkingFaintly · 25/05/2018 19:00

Maybe I'm being dazzled by the #hometovote joy, but I'm starting to get The Hope now...

Wakemeuuuup · 25/05/2018 19:09

I'm still worried. The highest turnout seems to be in more rural areas where love both are giving the older generation lifts to make sure they vote. It's not over yet but I really, really hope it's a yes

DrMantisToboggan · 25/05/2018 20:05

Turnout has slowed SadSadSad

chartreuse · 25/05/2018 21:06

Turnout is high as much as 70% in some areas according to RTÉ

Returnofthesmileybar · 25/05/2018 21:10

The turnout % has to be wrong, I think literally every person I know got two polling cards, both dh and I got them for two address and to stations. I think the % turnout will be higher than reported for this reason alone. Did anyone else get two?

chartreuse · 25/05/2018 21:17

They just did an analysis of turnout, mostly 50-60% even in rural areas, some mid 40s, some high 60s. Still 45 mins to go

NotLinkedIN · 25/05/2018 21:17

@PaddyFodder, that is what I meant. Thank you Trinity66

ForalltheSaints · 25/05/2018 21:20

If the outcome of the referendum on same sex marriage is a guide, then I would expect a yes vote.
