To think the Irish Abortion Referendum outcome will be a close call?

Polling day is within touching distance and from what I’ve seen on my social media channels, the vast majority seem to be swaying towards voting to Repeal. Do we think this is a true reflection of the majority or are the No side just less likely to be vocal on their social media channels? Whatever the outcome, I think it will be close.

What are everyone else’s thoughts?

But there statement is horrible. Basically now saying babies are going to be murdered. It's a historic outcry

DeadButDelicious · 26/05/2018 10:51

Just read the statement in full. Awful. Just awful.

OriginalGeordie · 26/05/2018 10:55

Absolutely brilliant, let’s hope the north is next but won’t hold my breath if the DUP have anything to do with it!

nancy75 · 26/05/2018 12:07

As I mentioned earlier in the thread I didn’t realise NI was any different to our health care in England, it is absolutely shocking and hopefully this will be the push to bring healthcare there into line with ours. Well done to the campaigners & voters in Ireland that have given women the rights they should always have had over their own body.

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2018 12:08

Have he official results been announced? Nothing on bbc and I’m watching RTE but nothing “official” announced?

nancy75 · 26/05/2018 12:09

Now the vote has been done what actually happens next? Is there something in place ready to go or do the government now need to argue over the finer points of how this will work?

CopONNotLinkedIn · 26/05/2018 12:13

I think a lot of older women have been involved in the campaign but feeling so much respect, admiration and gratitude to all the young people who came home to vote. I know when I was living in London in my 20s it would have been an expense that would have 'hit' and it would have been days off I probably could hardly spare. So well done to the army of women (and some men) who came home to vote.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 26/05/2018 12:20

First results shortly Mission but all the tallies match the exit polls. The tallies are very rigourous, volunteers literally hanging over the count, checking every vote as it is counted.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 26/05/2018 12:22

Heads of the bill have been published Nancy and, given the strength of the vote, are expected to be put through quickly and without significant amendment (not that the No side won't try but it doesn't seem likely they'll get too far).

Here's a link to the bill

Some people weren’t sure about the decision to specify the planned legislation in advance of the referendum but it’s all worked out for the best. They can get on with the process quickly and no one can say that the public were duped and didn’t know what they were voting for.

The mess would have been horrible if people started fighting all over again tomorrow between the “rape, cancer and fatal fetal deformity only” and “any reason up to 12 weeks, specified reasons beyond that” camps.

Indication is that NI women will be able to access abortion in Ireland I believe, which is would still be a stain on UK law but a huge practical improvement.

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2018 12:47

Who is this idiot on RTE right now Hmm

MissionItsPossible · 26/05/2018 12:47

Typical just as I posted that he’s gone lol

MiggeldyHiggins · 26/05/2018 12:52

That was probably Ronan Mullen, nasty little shitweasel.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 26/05/2018 12:56

Yes it was Rónán.

Can I start the #repealronanmullen campaign now? He's admitted he'll vote against the bill once it's finalised.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/05/2018 13:07

I thought it’d be close.

I was wrong, and I’m glad I was wrong. Fantastic result. Very happy.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 26/05/2018 13:20

First official return from Galway East (traditionally conservative) 60% Yes.

Yamayo · 26/05/2018 13:33

Problem I have with my most pro-lifers is that they bang on about the sanctity of Life as a grand concept but it's always at the expense of women. Not to mention once the babies are born the support mysteriously disappears.

I can't imagine anyone in their right minds would choose an abortion lightly.
For the odd anecdotal evidence of women who use Abortions as a form of birth control there are thousands of women in difficult situations- at last they get a choice.

AngeloMysterioso · 26/05/2018 14:34

These results coming through are amazing! Turnout 2% higher than for the same sex marriage ref. Absolutely incredible.

chartreuse · 26/05/2018 14:39

I hope this result will be the he end of having to endure Ronan Mullen and David Quinn and his Iona institute cronies. They all have the snug belief that they are speaking for the 'silent majority' but the numbers show that up for the lie it is.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 26/05/2018 15:12

Ronan Mullen, cant stand the little creep Angry

Save the eighth statement confirms what I thought would be the case, that they will block, oppose and hinder this every step of the way.

I am over the moon, I had thought as of last night yes would win (after a couple of Confused days) but I thought it would be close- never thought it would be this emphatic. I am delighted!!

Annasgirl · 26/05/2018 15:52

So thrilled - the silent majority were actually silent yes!!!
Now we need to make sure the legislation goes through exactly as promised and not watered down for those No people

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 15:54

Happy with the outcome. women no longer stigmatised, shamed and forced to leave the republic to have a choice

IStillMissBlockbuster · 26/05/2018 16:22

Even all that American money for the no campaign didn't overpower a woman's right to choose. What justice.

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 26/05/2018 17:13

Even all that American money for the no campaign didn't overpower a woman's right to choose. What justice.

I'm delighted about that and even more so that this means that foreign donations for the likes of the Iona institute are likely to plummet as the donors move on, probably to places such as Poland etc.
