Fat and fabulous

highchairhell · 24/05/2018 18:17

So I am fat. I like food too much to lose weight and after spending years of my life worrying about my waistline, I've had enough.

I want to look good this summer and see fabulous fat women all the time ... what is the secret to looking fat and fabulous?! Aibu to think that you can still look brilliant at 18 stone?! I just want fashion tips please, not judgement or weight loss advice! Thanks

Definitely good underwear is the first thing anyway op. And doing the bra intervention thing, if you haven't already. That makes a huge difference.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 25/05/2018 09:43

Oh and thanks for these links I'm definitely going to take a look at these :)

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 25/05/2018 09:45

The trick, I think, is seeing yourself as absolutely worthy of lovely clothes in flattering colours, hairdos, manicures, makeup (if these are your thing) and not waiting till you are thin to live. Some women spend a lifetime like this.

Which doesn’t seem to be what the fat shamers/faux health concern brigade support, but they can bugger off anyway.

tccat · 25/05/2018 09:51

I'm 5'2" and 13 stone but I have good legs seem to carry it off, I've found that a short stretchy skirt accentuates the legs and a floaty top hides the belly thus looking thinner that I am

Caramelapplecake · 25/05/2018 09:56

Tccat that's amazing! I would have guessed size 12 9 stone particularly at 5 ' 2".

RunMummyRun68 · 25/05/2018 09:59

Nah noqont

RunMummyRun68 · 25/05/2018 10:02

Exactly user.... it's a myth, or more likely just an excuse

Exactly user.... it's a myth, or more likely just an excuse

What does it matter to you what the reasons are?

bobstersmum · 25/05/2018 10:27

I know a larger lady who always looks fabulous she wears nice bright clothes, flattering tops and colourful patterned leggings and she just suits it. She has easy more confidence than me and I'm normal weight.

AntiGrinch · 25/05/2018 10:29

Great attitude, OP.
Have a brilliant summer, but can I just say.... this is the attitude that causes the weight to drop off. So you might be looking for smaller, fabulous things in a few months.
not that it matters.

Have fun!

Magicstar1 · 25/05/2018 10:36

@PomBearWithoutHerOFRS I've just looked at Dresslily and the clothes are gorgeous! I'd be a 26-28 (though I'm doing really well at losing weight at the moment)...are they true to size? I'm going on holiday at the end of the year and their beach clothes are fabulous. They do seem very cheap too

NorksAkimbo72 · 25/05/2018 10:50

I love this thread, thank you! I'm recovering from 30 years of yo-yo dieting...I'm a size 16/18, and I've never felt so comfortable being me. I do, however, still gravitate toward the tent like stuff, which I'm trying to slowly change. I also have no fashion sense, which doesn't help😂. I do follow a number of plus sized fashion bloggers which helps, but it's good that you've all posted links to shops you all like...really helpful. We need to start a fat and fabulous group!!

And to all the concern trolls on this thread: yep...I may have higher risks for lots of things as an overweight person, but you know what? I'll take those risks, because living with disordered eating, obsessive calorie counting, body dysmorphia, low self esteem and the absolute soul crushing anxiety that goes with dieting for weight loss is WORSE for me in the long run. Also, if being fat is the worst thing about me (and it is...I'm pretty awesome), then I'll take it...better than being a judgemental, fat shaming arse hole, I believe!Wink

sonjadog · 25/05/2018 11:19

I think good underwear is essential. Then find clothes that are fitted to your shape. The big tents suit no-one. I find makes such as Masai and Junarose do some nice stuff at reasonable prices.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 25/05/2018 12:14

@magic I am a size 26-28 from Evans/simply be and Jo Browns, and I find whatever size it is dressliliy equates to a UK24 fits me beautifully. I am a short arse, so basically spherical Grin so if you're tall, you might want to check lengths of things.
My most recent buys were two pairs of brightly coloured patterned short dungarees. They are cotton, so lovely and cool, and even my skinny teenage embarrassed by mum DD said they look nice Grin

Magicstar1 · 25/05/2018 12:18

That's great...they've some awful reviews, so it's good to get a personal recommendation. Thanks a mil Smile

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 25/05/2018 12:47

I think the reviews are from people who don't realise how long the shipping can take, or expect Harrod's quality for ten quid.

Everything I've ever bought has arrived and been lovely. On the one occasion something was out of stock, the communication was great, they offered me the choice of waiting for more stock or an immediate refund.

ChinUpChestOut · 25/05/2018 12:57

I have a colleague who's probably about 5'3" and a size 16-18. She has gorgeous dark brown hair that she wears either up, or down and wears slim fitting clothes. She looks fabulous.

She doesn't hesitate to wear a bright red lipstick, or have smokey eye make up and she gets admiring looks everywhere, always while wearing her very flattering, vibrant colour/strong pattern clothes.

As she puts it "I love my food, and I'm not going to diet". Be confident, and wear clothes that flatter you and avoid the baggy t-shirts - they do you no favours.

flippyfloppyflower · 25/05/2018 13:06

I am overweight (through love of chocolate and having to take some very nasty medication(not related to love of chocolate). I am always being told how lovely I look (not in the face region as I am very plain). I try to buy clothes that are not too tight but not oversized.

I get a lot of lovely things from Zulily (I wait for last chance deals) and they usually have a section for folk who are bigger dress sizes. Oh and I love scarves and quirky eye glasses. I am sorry East has closed as some of their dresses were lovely on a fuller figure.

SerenDippitty · 25/05/2018 13:11

Tccatthat's amazing! I would have guessed size 12 9 stone particularly at 5 ' 2".

I'm 5ft 2 9st 3 and size 10.

Ollivander84 · 25/05/2018 13:17

I'm about 15 stone and between a 14-18, usually 14 bottom and 16/18 top

SerenDippitty · 25/05/2018 13:17

But agree that ttccat has fabulous legs.

flippyfloppyflower · 25/05/2018 13:18

LolaTheDarkdestroyer as PP have said how nice of you to care. The heart attack may or not happen and kill me but I do have another condition that will so keep your opinions to yourself.

EBearhug · 25/05/2018 17:15

Even if people do lose weight, it's not going to happen overnight. No one's going to go to bed size 20 and wake up a 12. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look good at whatever size you are, whether or not you have any intention of trying to change it or not.

ScreamingValenta · 25/05/2018 17:26

Hear hear Ebearhug.

HerMajestysSecret · 25/05/2018 17:28

Good legs make a world of difference. I'm a size 12 but I have solid, rugby player legs and just never feel elegant or remotely lithe in anything! They've always been muscly even in my teens and 20s when I was a size 8/10 I had heavy calves.

Larger ladies with nice legs can get away a great deal if they play those up. My MIL is a very tall woman, probably a size 14/16 but she has great slim legs and looks fantastic in shorts and knee-length dresses.
