To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

That’s true about camilla. Zara also. We just don’t notice normal sized people as much

waterlego6064 · 23/05/2018 23:03

great. Not past tense. Michelle Obama still looks great, I imagine!

w12newmum · 23/05/2018 23:07

I think Kate didn’t look as thin before because she was younger so more youthful look. I am naturally slim and have started to look ‘too’ thin into my 30s, particularly my face but I can’t make my face put weight on (without getting a big tummy too).

Fucksgiven · 23/05/2018 23:08

They don't look thin to Me, just normal weight

LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 23/05/2018 23:08

water well we did see Serena at the wedding - muscle and curves, quite a powerhouse! But designers design for the slender - it's much easier for them tbh, it's a real skill to design well for curves (Dolce and Gabanna one of the exceptional).

waterlego6064 · 23/05/2018 23:08

Ohmydays, that is true. There is an anorexic woman who lives near me, and I am amazed she can actually walk. She looks like my mum did when she was dying of cancer.

But it's worth remembering that not all eating disorders manifest in extreme weight loss. Bulimia, for example, may not result in an emaciated frame.

I don't think either of the Duchesses look ill (not that it's any of my business anyway), but they are both at the very slim end of healthy, in my opinion. If I were their friend, I might be hoping they wouldn't lose any more weight.

yourfavegorgon · 23/05/2018 23:10

@ohmydayslove yes, i’ve known lots and lots of people with anorexia and not all of them were completely skeletal. Anorexia is mental and behavioural, not just about what weight someone is.

waterlego6064 · 23/05/2018 23:11

LoveforPG Yes, Serena looked magnificent at the wedding! Amazing. So many women seem to be afraid of building muscle for fear of getting 'bulky' but there can be no denying that the likes of Serena look the very picture of excellent health. Building muscle is so important for women, especially as we get into middle age, as it helps strengthen our bones for old age.

maxthemartian · 23/05/2018 23:14

The comments that "we have lost sight of a normal weight" make me laugh.

This picture is normal weight. Those girls would look enormous next to Kate, who looks worryingly thin in general.

To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?
pallisers · 23/05/2018 23:14

This is what a normal, healthy - even aspirational - weight looked like in the 1970s...

I was a teenager in the 1970s and I was way thinner than the woman in that picture (is it Susie Quatro??) as were nearly all of my friends. That wouldn't have been an aspirational weight for anyone I knew back then. But we also just didn't think about weight that much. Very few people were overweight.

I looked at my school picture age 17ish (maybe 1982) recently and everyone was pretty slim and the girls I remember as being a bit heavier were also pretty slim by today's standards.

bobblyflower · 23/05/2018 23:14

I agree that people are often falling over themselves on MN to suggest that painfully thin is actually completely normal and healthy.

Given that the camera adds pounds I suspect that if you saw somebody with Kate's figure IRL (at her thinnest) you would notice and wonder eating disorder.

As for why they are thin...I reckon I would be too in that position. A combination of having the world's eyes on you plus being cooked for, personal trainers etc.

maxthemartian · 23/05/2018 23:16

There was a fashion for painfully thin in the seventies. It was not healthy! It was fags and amphetamines.

NotLinkedIn · 23/05/2018 23:17

It's part of the job. They are both slim but neither is any slimmer than the average posh and or rich woman imo.

Are women really thinner in London? or does London just have a much higher percentage of younger women shopping there.

Jonbb · 23/05/2018 23:18

Oh please, can't we get over judging people on their weight and their appearance. It isn't anybody's business except their own. I think they both do excellent charitable and human rights work. Can we please value them on that?

bobblyflower · 23/05/2018 23:19

Who is judging them?

Noticing a body weight and contemplating the reasons behind it isn't judging

Nobody is saying that they are stupid or anything because they're thin

talllikejerryhall · 23/05/2018 23:20

I think that the gossip about Meghan possibly being preggo is true - I watched suits through the year and she was SO THIN back then, it was crazy... she actually looks a bit more normal (or poss a tiny bit pregnant) now.

If so, go them! I love the idea of a shot gun royal wedding!

PenelopeChipShop · 23/05/2018 23:20

Some people are being completely disingenuous on here! I would have thought it was obvious what the OP is asking. Kate has clearly lost weight since getting engaged/married to William and has kept it off through pregnancies. I imagine her concern is looking good in the photos. I think she’s beautiful but that as she ages her face looks a bit worse for being so slim. Clearly her body looks great!

Meghan I haven’t really ‘followed’ so can’t say how she’s changed but she’s certainly super slim now.

They are unusually slim imho. I would describe myself as a ‘normally slim’ person at 5’3 and 8.5 stone but I would look like a chubby gnome next to either of them!

Fucksgiven · 23/05/2018 23:21

Good skin, glossy hair and (Kate) fertile as she likes. Hardly evidence of an eating disorder. Slim not underweight

formerbabe · 23/05/2018 23:22

Vom.

Keep tugging that forelock hey!

RunMummyRun68 · 23/05/2018 23:23

She's active as well. Sporty.

To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?
LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 23/05/2018 23:23

Sprinke, yes Zara absolutely average size. And looks good! Princess Anne never gave a damn about fashion or looks at all - she's sport orientated.
It seems like the real Royals (born into it) are not that fussed that they are scrutinised and do not care much about media, but the new wives do care. I'd think you can relax a bit once you are in the fold! Lead by example those young girls who watch you, that you don't have to be immaculate at all times.

yourfavegorgon · 23/05/2018 23:26

Ffs saying someone is extremely thin is not saying they have an eating disorder! An eating disorder is a compulsion to engage in very unhealthy food/exercise habits. It is beyond the sufferer’s control.
A rich and famous person being deliberately on a permanent diet is not the same thing.

Ohmydayslove · 23/05/2018 23:26

Sgree regards comments on eating disorders but if we are talking dangerously thin you are talking the worst stage anorexia. I worked with some. And yes some people with food issues are not thin but that’s not what the thread is about.

I thought both duchesses looked fine as did Serena and most of the guests men and women.

Let’s get over judging women by their weight please the daily mail and trashy mags do it much better Sad

I couldn’t give a rats ass how fat or thin another woman is as long as they ste happy in their skin

MrsLupo · 23/05/2018 23:32

I was a teenager in the 1970s and I was way thinner than the woman in that picture (is it Susie Quatro??) as were nearly all of my friends. That wouldn't have been an aspirational weight for anyone I knew back then. But we also just didn't think about weight that much. Very few people were overweight.

Pallisers, it's Agnetha from Abba, who was most definitely a weight women would have been happy with and men lusted after. Agreed that fewer people were overweight then, but also far fewer were underweight. Anyone who was as underweight as Kate and Meghan would have been described honestly as such, and not many people would have wanted to copy them. My point is that if we have lost sight of what a healthy weight is it is more about the normalising of extreme thinness than the normalising of obesity, which is called what it is all too readily imo.

LoveforPGTipsMonkey · 23/05/2018 23:32

So why William and Harry (also in public eye, photographed) are nothing like as thin as the wives? Why is it nowa woman's mission to be as thin as poss?
By the way it's really not true that most rich women are thin - really? Not the self made ones for sure, and those with rich husbands - depends on taste and culture of the husband!
