To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

Who fucking cares anyway??

As long as they are happy and healthy, I couldn’t give a rats arse how thin they were.

Confused
Lweji · 28/05/2018 10:31

Kate’s bmi of 19 is only .5 above anorexic level.

That is bollocks.
The lower limit of healthy range is 18.5. BMI associated with anorexia is well below 17

19 is absolutely fine

I had a BMI of 18 most of my life. Perfectly healthy, although admittedly skinny. Such statements (top) are idiotic.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 10:32

It's a good thing I never married a Royal. Grin

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 10:32

Just out of interest would those of you who say 18.5 is absolutely fine call a BMI of 24.5 a healthy weight, or would you call it “borderline overweight” or even “fat”?

Lweji · 28/05/2018 10:34

Out of interest, I'd rather be on the lower end of the range than at the top. It is healthier.

QueenoftheNights · 28/05/2018 10:35

The medical advice is that we should aim to be at the LOWER END of the healthy range . Not the top end.

Happy now?

I've got a BMI of 19, am healthy and told by a dr it was 'perfect'.

People love to slim shame here don't they?

PrincessoftheSea · 28/05/2018 10:39

BMI is not alone an indicator of health. I know very thin people who don’t eat well and are very unfit. A doctor presumably knew more about you than your BMI when he said you were perfect.

EdWinchester · 28/05/2018 10:41

My bmi, whilst in the healthy range at 23, is at the top end. I would love to get it down to 19 but would have to lose 25 lbs. Shock

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 10:41

This is the Mumsnet mentality I know.

Bottom of range = healthy and normal
Middle of range = could stand to lose a few pounds
Top of range = fat,

I know I’m banging my head against a brick wall in saying this but it is not necessarily healthier to be at the bottom end of the range. It all depends on your frame size and natural body type.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 10:42

This is the Mumsnet mentality I know.

If you want to kid yourself.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 10:45

The problem is that some people seem to think that being at the bottom end it's automatically unhealthy, not the opposite, as you're stating. And many people don't have a realistic idea of what a person at the bottom end looks like.
As a population we're increasingly more used to the top end.

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 10:46

I’m also at the top end at 23.7 but my waist is only an inch bigger than Kate’s. Got a bigger arse and boobs than her!

bananafish81 · 28/05/2018 10:47

It's within healthy range. There's the string test to consider which is a crude facsimile of identifying risk of visceral fat and some say better than BMII* so technically if someone is within healthy bmi range but fails the string test that could be an indication of unhealthy body fat. But based purely on bmi, it's healthy, yes.

My BMI is 18.5 and having seen a LOT of consultants due to various medical conditions, not one has had any issues with my weight. GP routine health checks measuring height and weight perfectly happy. If the clinicians are happy with my BMI, then I don't see any reason to be concerned

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2018 10:49

I think the real issue is that women in the public eye-whatever they do- are still judged more on how they look than on what they do or say. Look at the glamorous historians on panel shows, for example-and compare the abuse Mary Beard gets over her looks. Women are first and foremost considered on their ornamental qualities.

wheezing · 28/05/2018 10:49

How the hell do people know what she weighs and therefore what her BMI is???

I’m towards the top of the healthy range. And that’s wearing 25” jeans and size 6-8. I just weigh more than people expect. I don’t think I could guess Kate’s weight to the nearest 10kg! How the hell do people presume to know??

SerenDippitty · 28/05/2018 10:50

I’m not “stating the opposite”. I did say “not necessarily healthier”.

Could someone please link to some medical advice that states it is better for everyone to be at the bottom end? Why does the NHS BMI calculator tell me I am a healthy weight if I am not?

Queenofthe Nights a BMI of 19 might be perfect for you, it wouldn’t be for me.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 11:12

Mortality rates according to BMI seem to change with age. From lower rates in the lows for the young to higher BMI being better in older people.

It's a good thing I'm getting heavier in my middle age it seems.

To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?
Lweji · 28/05/2018 11:13

You were accusing people of thinking being in the lower end is necessarily healthier, when they don't. It's more like the opposite, where people like the OP seem to think it's necessarily less healthy.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 11:15

"A doctor presumably knew more about you than your BMI when he said you were perfect."

I think it's unlikely that the doctor knows what the poster eats every day or even if she exercises, at least I haven't been asked either of those things in recent years.

Lweji · 28/05/2018 11:17

A GP once weighed and measured me, looked at my BMI, asked me if I was anorexic, I said no, she left it at that. Grin

VogueVVague · 28/05/2018 11:19

I mean lets get real the average uk size is a 14/16 aka overweight.

littlegreyhare · 28/05/2018 11:27

If you try and forget what you think normal should look like, just think of images such as Kate playing basketball, walking with her dogs, running on the track with Wills and Harry, picture of cycling pictured somewhere on here and just in general. She looks extremely healthy! She is fit, slim and clearly very active, some people just can't accept that.

I've had an anorexic friend and she looked absolutely nothing like Kate, light years away, you would double take look at her in the street. I am very slight and have a BMI of 18 but am in my 50's, healthy and have had 3 children. I hate that everyone presumes that anyone slim who exercises must automatically suffer from an ED Hmm. I've had a woman ask me if I was anorexic too, just unbelievable and so thoughtless - I wanted to ask her about her close relationship with the biscuit tin but of course you can't comment the other way!

Lweji · 28/05/2018 11:33

And she's had three children. Grin

Ollivander84 · 28/05/2018 11:40

Lweji- I've seen that before. Suspect it's because if you're say 65/70/80 and become ill and you're low weight already, you have no reserves to fall back on so you lose a stone and then start risking pressure sores etc

foxyloxy78 · 28/05/2018 11:49

They both need a good feed. Way too thin.
