To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

*As for attraction, I am not at all attracted to overweight men.

I know that studies have proven that men feel similar.*

That’s just what you like to think. I often see normal men with overweight women. Not so often the other way around.

daisypond · 27/05/2018 18:34

Neither is "extremely thin". Neither is even "thin". They look normally slim/trim/fit/to me.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 27/05/2018 18:46

Forty years ago they would be considered normal, not thin. Watch old films people were that sort of size, people have only got so overweight in the past 30 years.

dontbesillyhenry · 27/05/2018 18:47

Wow vogue carb free fat free biscuit on its way to you!
And the last statement just proves how MN is a parallel universe...they don't even look thin apparently ffs!

NamChangeAgain · 27/05/2018 19:11

dontbesilly I agree with you and I am surrounded by very slim and attractive people everyday, as I work in a very posh bit of London! I certainly do not have lost sight of what is slim and healthy!

SemperIdem · 27/05/2018 20:46

Gas

That isn’t how most women looked 40 years ago.

My grandmothers, not unusually short in their youth compared to their peers, are both around the 5’1 mark. They make me, a slim 5’6, look like I’m built like a cart horse. This is despite the fact one is actually quite overweight.

Kate and Meghan are both taller than average by some way and also markedly slimmer than average. Describing someone as “thin” isn’t perjorative anymore than calling someone “fat” is, it’s factual. Granted being factual about weight has fallen out of favour in these “that’s fat shaming” days we live in.

Being healthily thin is aspirational, particularly as the gap between the rich and poor is increasingly marked by weight.

"watch old films"....watch new films they still don't show a full range of women's many different sizes. what makes you think Marilyn Monroe was a typical size for her era?? she wasn't typical hence the reason she and other stars were "spotted".

walkswithmydog · 27/05/2018 21:20

Neither of them seem to have hips. Oh dear, wait for the flaming.

formerbabe · 27/05/2018 21:37

Let's be honest, what a lot of posters on here want to say is that...if you think Meghan and Kate are thin, it's because you are a fat cow.

littlegreyhare · 27/05/2018 21:50

What do you mean they don't have hips walks? Literally don't have hips? You've obviously overlooked the fact that Kate has given birth to 3 very healthy children? Bit tricky without hips I would have thought.

pallisers · 27/05/2018 21:56

I've seen the photos of my mum and her friends from the late 1940s, 50s and 60s, including on the beach. they were thin. The men were also all a lot thinner than men now (although certainly weren't as muscular as men in hollywood now - actually the women probably had less muscle definition too - that is the biggest difference I see)

wishingitwasfriday · 27/05/2018 21:59

I haven't read the thread, just the first few posts. We, as a nation, have lost sight of what is a normal weight. They look thin because we are used to a size 12+ being described as normal. They both look healthy and happy. What more is there to say?

walkswithmydog · 27/05/2018 22:07

I know Little, it baffles me.

Sevendown · 27/05/2018 22:13

Kate looked healthy in the early 00s.

She looks skeletal now.

Armi · 27/05/2018 22:15

I am a fat biffer and think they look fit and happy. Yes, they are very slim, but they look cheerful with it and Kate, in particular, glows with good health. I always think she exercises a lot as there’s bugger all else to do, locked away in KP.

Neither of them make me feel sad in the way I felt watching Thandie Newton on Graham Norton; she looked so tiny, pinched and skeletal. I’m sure she’s as happy as a clam, however, so I should just shut up.

I’ve seen photos of my mum as a young girl of 16 (around 1940) and when I was a child. She was never thin in her life. She was a solid sturdily built young woman. Growing up in the 60s and 70s I can remember her being dissatisfied with her weight and trying to diet.

LightAsTheBreeze · 27/05/2018 22:24

I didn’t realise that a size 12 wasn’t a normal size and was an overweight size.

formerbabe · 27/05/2018 22:26

Not according to some of the angsty posters on here!

walkswithmydog · 27/05/2018 22:32

They're ridiculously underweight, who are people trying to kid. But hey, let's let young girls think it's normal. Confused

pallisers · 27/05/2018 22:37

But hey, let's let young girls think it's normal

most of the young girls in my dd's school, play sports, dress in sweats, don't wear makeup to school, and are utterly focused on getting into uni and are as slim if not slimmer than the duchesses - and if sporty, ever bit as muscular. When dressed up for prom or whatever, they look like those women in their dresses (with the added benefit of being 17 but the disadvantage of having paid 50bucks for their dress). There are of course some heavier girls. Actually one of my daughters is significantly heavier because of medications etc. But being as thin as they are actually is normal. Would you say the same about heavier women in the news "hey let's let young girls think it's normal"

SerenDippitty · 27/05/2018 22:40

This. Actresses have to be thin nowadays, just as I’m sure they were expected to be slimmer than average in the past. People varied then just as they do now but that wasn’t reflected in films any more than it is now in films and media generally.

formerbabe · 27/05/2018 22:42

@pallisers

You are talking about girls still at school, of course the vast majority are slim.

Meghan and Kate are in their mid thirties and Kate has been through three pregnancies. For women in their age bracket, especially mothers, it takes far more work to stay thin than it does for teenagers.

Jonbb · 27/05/2018 22:42

They both look healthy to me. If Kate were ridiculously underweight wouldn't she have problems conceiving?

pallisers · 27/05/2018 22:55

@formerbabe

I was responding to a post which talked about young girls thinking it is normal to look slim. It is normal for them. They also don't differentiate between 30 year olds or 20 year olds. Most of those girls have slim mothers in their 40s and 50s.

Of course it takes more work for someone to stay slim after 3 pregnancies (don't even go there with post menopausal bodies) but that still doesn't mean it is unhealthy or weird to be as slim as the 2 duchesses in your 30s. It isn't. And it certainly isn't a bad example to set to young women.

stopgap · 27/05/2018 23:08

I’ve got twig legs, made less so by a lot of deadlifting, RDLs and squats. If I didn’t lift weights. I would have legs exactly like MM’s, and those “twig” legs have seen me through 19-minute 5k races, so yes, you can have Olive Oyl legs and be both fast and strong.

If you’re an apple (as MM is) even if you’re a slim apple, you’re going to have a rounder face, which is why I think she looks well. KM carries weight more in her lower body, so yes, sometimes she’s going to look a bit gaunt.
