To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

Some of these comments on this thread are horrible. I don't think there's anything wrong with Meghan's legs, they're similar to mine actually and I've always had skinny legs.

Both Meghan and Kate look healthy to me, not too thin. It's a shame that we like to scrutinise women's weight, even when they're within a healthy range.

For what it's worth, I am fairly skinny. I think I have a smaller appetite than most people I know. I don't watch what I eat or really think about it all, but I find I can't eat a lot in one sitting. People often comment on my portion size, but I think it's ok. They also say "don't lose too much weight". But, I've never tried to lose weight, I'm always pretty much the same size.

littlegreyhare · 25/05/2018 09:52

'Naturally' slim people just have a naturally small appetite. They're not TRYING to stay slim by restricting what they eat. There's a difference.

Totally agree with this. I try and force myself to eat more as I really don't like to be so slim but it never works and I seem to function as a perfectly normal adult despite being so slight!

formerbabe · 25/05/2018 10:18

Yes that's what I mean. Their appetite is naturally small rather than their body having more tolerance to large amounts of calories.

I wonder why some people have small appetites and some people have larger ones? Is appetite genetic? Hormonal?

I'm a size 14-16. I'm definitely overweight. However, even being overweight, I don't eat what I actually want. If I ate what I wanted, I'd probably be a size 20 or more. I probably eat more than very slim people but nowhere near the amount I'd actually like to eat, so I suppose I do restrict what I eat...whereas someone with a smaller appetite may eat less than me but they are eating what they want and not restricting. Meghan has naturally slim legs - it's just her shape. Both women have the money to maintain mega healthy diets, exercise and grooming habits and are they are already blessed with good looks.
They look fantastic and neither looks too thin - you do not get skin that glows like theirs without the best diets - it's just not possible and no product can emulate it.
Being constantly photographed must be the best incentive ever to stay in shape.
Their mothers look fabulous too.

StableGenius · 25/05/2018 10:27

The question of whether appetites are genetic is interesting. I think there's more to it than that, but it'll have a lot to do with the food culture in your family.

I grew up in a house where mahoosive portion sizes were standard, there was pudding with every meal. DM was a big emotional/comfort eater, AND a fantastic cook/baker. I didn't stand much of a chance Grin.

When my slim friends came to stay, they could barely get through dinner, let alone pudding too. They just weren't used to it. One friend memorably stuffed trifle down her knickers when no-one was looking so as not to seem rude Grin. (If she's on here, this will out me completely.)

satsumasunrise · 25/05/2018 10:40

It's obvious that the people slating Meghan's body have not watched Suits.

She has a sensational hourglass figure and looks wonderful.

FindoGask · 25/05/2018 10:43

@downthestrada I agree with you. She's got similar legs to me too - and I don't think there's anything medically wrong with me? Certainly my 'insanely thin, twig-like' calves haven't prevented me from training as a powerlifter 4 x a week.

LucheroTena · 25/05/2018 10:44

They’ve both lost a lot of weight over the years, so did not come from a ‘naturally’ (don’t agree this exists) skinny starting point but they were slim / normal sized to start with. I can’t comment on the need to be so thin as it’s not in my psyche but suspect it stems from being photographed so much. It’s terribly ageing.

SerenDippitty · 25/05/2018 10:49

And as I said upthread no one believes there is any such thing as being naturally fat. If you are fat you eat too much don't exercise enough full stop. It's a good example of thin privilege.

HerMajestysSecret · 25/05/2018 10:50

Today 09:23 SerenDippitty

I have an underactive thyroid and for me it is very important to ear at regular intervals to keep my metabolism ticking over. My thyroid needs an adequate calorie intake to support its function

Really? Who told you this? I've been on thyroid medication for years and have never been given dietary advice. Surely the medication restores you to the correct amount of thyroid needed to function normally?

DameDoom · 25/05/2018 10:59

I am not keen on the word 'thin' - from lots of people mouths it means skinny and unhealthy looking. Kate and Meghan are slim - maybe pencil slim - but slim nonetheless.

DameDoom · 25/05/2018 10:59

people's

SerenDippitty · 25/05/2018 11:02

It's a replacement therapy, it treats the symptoms but does not make the thyroid behave normally with regard to metabolism, any more than taking HRT restores fertility.

There is evidence that restricting calorie intake too much can make the condition worse. I have been on thyroid medication for 15 years and have read up about the condition.

formerbabe · 25/05/2018 11:03

And as I said upthread no one believes there is any such thing as being naturally fat. If you are fat you eat too much don't exercise enough full stop

Yes but if we take appetite into account, it changes things.

I'm overweight but like I said, I actually restrict what I eat...I don't eat what I want. I have a big appetite and don't eat enough to fulfill it. A thin person maybe eating everything they want without restriction, it's just that they don't genuinely want much.

Therefore overweight people being seen as gluttonous or lacking self control is not necessarily correct.

downthestrada · 25/05/2018 11:12

FindoGask Yes, my thin legs don't stop me teaching fitness classes each day! There's nothing medically wrong with my legs.

montenotte · 25/05/2018 11:31

I've been cutting out sugar recently and honestly it makes such a difference to hunger levels.
Last night i had chicken and roasted vegetables for dinner so no refined carbs. Today I didn't have breakfast until 9am - usually i am big on breakfast and need something to eat quite soon after getting up.

littlegreyhare · 25/05/2018 11:35

IheartNiles yeah cos of course Kate and Meghan look sooo aged don't they Hmm.

Sorry to disappoint you but I am 'naturally skinny' as you put it and much as you don't believe in its existence I am living proof as are many others on this thread that of course it is a thing.

littlegreyhare · 25/05/2018 11:38

oh and no-one photographs me so no pressure there! downthestrada I do weights classes, run half marathons and training for my first marathon, have had 3 children and pretty healthy eating not a huge amount. Go figure as Meghan might say Wink

formerbabe · 25/05/2018 11:43

Yet you say you're 'naturally' skinny?! You do loads of exercise by the sounds of it. Like you said, you eat healthily and not huge amounts. Would you still be 'naturally' skinny if you ate more, ate more unhealthily and gave up the exercise?

Lethaldrizzle · 25/05/2018 11:47

The fifth key - housework and running around after children burns more calories than many forms of exercise and megan was slim before she was rich

formerbabe · 25/05/2018 11:52

The fifth key - housework and running around after children burns more calories than many forms of exercise

Yeah, because mums are never overweight are they?! Hmm

I doubt Kate or Meghan do housework either.

littlegreyhare · 25/05/2018 11:59

formerbabe I have vast periods in my life when I haven't done any exercise whatsoever. I have been precisely the same weight for 35 years, only put on a stone for each pregnancy which then went immediately. The exercise is for fun and have only done it for the last couple of years, again no change in weight just more toned and obviously fitter.

I eat a lot of rubbish in amongst the good stuff too.

littlegreyhare · 25/05/2018 12:00

I really do believe that the total lack of change in my appearance and weight over the years whatever I do or don't do makes me naturally slim yes.

SerenDippitty · 25/05/2018 13:04

I doubt Kate or Meghan do housework either.

Also rather doubt that Kate does much of the running around after the kids either.

formerbabe · 25/05/2018 13:19

Grin. I was tempted to say that but thought I'd be flamed on here!
