Tattooed nurses

Would you be put off by a tattooed nurse? At the moment I’ve only got them in places a patient would never see but I do plan to add some to my upper arm in the near future.

Just want to hear your thoughts and reasons!

And he's torpedoed his chances of employment already? Pity.

According to LinkedIn he is currently employed by Cambridge University.

So apparently not.

shinycat · 24/05/2018 16:08

@hoistTheSales

What a horrible little snob you are. Hmm Can you actually HEAR yourself?! Plus, you are talking a load of nonsense.

hoistthesales

I definitely nothing which ends with an -ology'. I have a PPE followed by Linguists and Computing.

Yes, yes, of COURSE you. We believe you. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

If Employers are going to look down their noses at people who have tattoos, and not employ them PURELY for that reason, (despite them being intelligent, good at what they do, and well-qualified,) then the person applying for the job will dodge a bullet by not working for such a narrow minded, pathetic, judgemental company anyway.

PLUS, if companies start refusing to employ people with tattoos, they are going to start to run seriously short of people to employ, seeing as how the majority of people under 30 have got tattoos!

specialsubject · 24/05/2018 16:10

I dont like the look of tattoos, same as I dont like the look of high heels, ripped jeans, nose piercings, thick red lipsticks, long.nails and many other horrors. But as long as it doesnt affect how a person does their job I dont "disapprove." Hmm

and I dont comment because I dont have anything positive to say , and it is a dull subject.

I'm a financial advisor in a niche part of finance, am absolutely covered in tattoo's. My clients do not bat an eyelid. If anything they only ask the meaning behind them. I am highly qualified. Quite a few letters after my name. I think as long as they aren't on the hands, face or neck most jobs are ok.

DarlingNikita · 24/05/2018 16:17

hoist, no, it's just that you seem to state and accept 'working class students are less likely to do well at university' as a sort of immutable fact and a badge of the superiority of public schools per se.

Your thinking seems narrow, unaware of context and uncritical.

JacquesHammer · 24/05/2018 16:18

Funny. Because I’ve always had visible tattoos and piercings and been in work when I wanted to be and where I wanted to be since I graduated at 21.

Some torpedo Grin

I just feel a bit sad for the kids being taught by the ‘very good’ teacher instead of the ‘incredible’ teacher just because hoist chose a candidate based on their appearance.

I can’t imagine the kids would care. The best teacher I had at school was a fantastic woman who skated roller derby at weekends, had a wonderful beehive hairdo and dressed in a 50s style. The other teachers in the department looked far more like hoist’s cup of tea but none of them connected with students like she did. Not a single kid failed her class.

Hell no. You’re busy trying to save my life or help me. I wouldn’t care if you came in dressed as Spider-Man with neon pink hair tbh

beardedlobster · 24/05/2018 16:42

Just be careful regarding your job and future jobs. The hospital I work for does not allow staff to have visible tattoos.

Comeymemo · 24/05/2018 16:54

I’ve not RTFT. But I can say for sure that many elderly and ethnic minority patients would be frightened by tattoos. In China/Japan, there is still a very strong and live association between tattoos and organised crime (mafia).

Separately, my mum (not Asian) is in her 80s and would definitely be put off by a sleeve tattoo. She would be frightened, because it’s not mainstream in her culture and she would associate it with crime.

I also don’t think tattoos are appropriate for professionals- doctors, lawyers, accountants. Same as weird piercings. They are off putting. If you are trying to win other people’s trust, why make things hard on yourself by eliciting a negative reaction?

user1499173618 · 24/05/2018 16:57

The blinkered stereotype is the belief that your appearance is no-one’s business but your own in a professional setting. A certain blandness in appearance is an act of care.

Flatdilemma · 24/05/2018 17:00

One of the best teachers my kids had had bright pink hair, a nose ring and Tattoos. She was firm but fair and an incredible teacher, took kids who were on track to fail and got them passes.
I would rather that than a shit teacher who happened to have no tattoos.

I've worked with people in high profile positions with many tattoos.

LoveInTokyo · 24/05/2018 17:03

Comey, a lot of elderly patients find a lot of things frightening and offputting, including in some cases (unfortunately) being cared for by a black person.

Now, OK, a nurse can choose not to get visible tattoos and they can't choose not to be black, but that's not really the point. If you are a patient in hospital (whether elderly, or from an ethnic minority, or having any other feature), you have a right to be treated with respect, dignity and competence, but if you have a problem with your nurse's personal appearance (or anything else about them which doesn't have an impact on their ability to care for you), then that's your problem, not theirs.

Comeymemo · 24/05/2018 17:05

Yep agree with user. I love funky statement jewelry, so I counterbalance it with very conservative suits. Those who say tattoos don’t matter clearly don’t hold executive jobs in finance/law - there is no way you’d be part on that industry with huge tattoos. It is really frowned upon. And don’t even mention accountants, they’re 10 times worse.

JacquesHammer · 24/05/2018 17:08

Erm yeah. So I was a conveyancing partner in a law firm for 5 years Grin

DarlingNikita · 24/05/2018 17:10

user1499173618, you wheeled that 'blandness' post out a while ago.

Comeymemo · 24/05/2018 17:11

Love I see your point, but I don’t agree. I think tattoos are really unnecessary and if you choose to work with vulnerable/elderly patients, the you shouldn’t add to their burden / scare them voluntarily.

And before I get accused of racism, I’m from a minority, my husband from a different one, we live in another country, my kids are “minority squared”, etc.
Tattoos are a life-limiting choice. Better accept it and move on.

Lethaldrizzle · 24/05/2018 17:11

Some might think that funky statement jewellery is conservative!

LoveInTokyo · 24/05/2018 17:11

I am a lawyer.

I don't have any tattoos personally but I have worked with people who do.

Comeymemo · 24/05/2018 17:13

Conveyancing hmm? Not quite ecm/FCPA work. No offence but not really what I’m talking about.

Jessikita · 24/05/2018 17:15

As long as someone is clean and tidy I do not care how they decorate their body, for any profession.

LoveInTokyo · 24/05/2018 17:16

Why is it that the words "no offence but" almost always accompany something rather offensive?

Hmm
JacquesHammer · 24/05/2018 17:16

Conveyancing hmm? Not quite ecm/FCPA work. No offence but not really what I’m talking about

Really? You said "executive position in a law firm" - you do know how a law firm with partners works right....?

You then said "there is no way you’d be part on that industry with huge tattoos" (sic)

Do make up your mind or maybe make your posts a little clearer (except that would be a touch more tricky to backpedal from right?)

And no offense at all; I don't work there any more I run my own company. You know with ALL those life-limiting tattoos I have.

themightycrayon · 24/05/2018 17:17

I’ve had a LOT of nurses (many more than I can count) and no, there’s no way I’d be put off by a tattoo. Or seven. If you’re a good nurse, that’s all I care about.
