Tattooed nurses

Would you be put off by a tattooed nurse? At the moment I’ve only got them in places a patient would never see but I do plan to add some to my upper arm in the near future.

Just want to hear your thoughts and reasons!

On your hands, face or neck, yes I would judge, big time.
Anywhere else, wouldn't give a fuck. Unless they were of objectionable content

SteviebunsBottritrundle · 23/05/2018 15:51

A4710Rider

No, and anyone who is is a fucking idiot

Totally.

Agreed!

onalongsabbatical · 23/05/2018 15:53

I don't actually like tattoos but I'd never judge anyone adversely for having one - my own daughter and son-in-law have them and they're perfectly fine people. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

In fact, for some reason I think I'd even quite warm to a tattooed nurse. Despite not actually liking tattoos. Weird, innit?

annandale · 23/05/2018 15:53

Lol at 'i hate patients'

The Trust i work for has a policy forbidding visible tattoos but the nursing shortage is so great that they would be insane to enforce it, as it would eliminate about a quarter of the nursing workforce. I suppose if they wanted to get rid of you for some other reason, they might use your tattoo as an excuse.

PinkHeart5914 · 23/05/2018 15:54

As long as the tattoo isn’t offensive ( I.e racist) then I wouldn’t have a problem and anyone that looked down on a nurse that was helping care for them becuase of a tattoo is probably a dick anyway tbh!

However whatever hospital you work for may have a policy of covering tattoos up as a pot of work places do, Dh isn’t a nurse but even his work place like tattoos covered

KitKat1985 · 23/05/2018 15:54

I'm a nurse. A lot of my colleagues have tattoos and it's not an issue where I work, but I know some work places don't like tattoos in visible places (bare in mind if you are on a ward you need to bare armed from the elbows down for infection control reasons). Obviously also anything potentially offensive is going to be frowned upon.

I'd caution though that some of your patients will have quite disparaging views on tattoos and may judge you (unfairly) for having them.

Aeroflotgirl · 23/05/2018 15:59

Nope her clinical competence is far more important.

Summerinrome · 23/05/2018 16:00

It would depend on the style and also the content of the tattoo, and although you have had lots of support on here, in reality I think it is unprofessional and lots of other employers would agree.

I would keep them covered.

Tippexy · 23/05/2018 16:01

I would understand that you had had some issues in your life and that you had poor judgement.

Hygge · 23/05/2018 16:02

It wouldn't both me.

I've been in hospital a lot and the only thing I've cared about while I've been there is that the staff know what they're doing and that they are nice to me.

I can recall some outstanding nurses for the care and compassion they've given me, and one or two really awful ones who have made a bad time worse because of their attitude. But I couldn't tell you if any of them had a tattoo.

I do think it's a shame that some people and some employers can be so shallow when it comes to appearences.

fluffiphlox · 23/05/2018 16:02

‘Tattooed Nurses’. Sounds like a rather niche fetish.

JacquesHammer · 23/05/2018 16:02

Grin Grin Grin

Hygge · 23/05/2018 16:03

That should say "bother" not both. Autocorrect and a sticky keyboard are hating me today.

fantasmasgoria1 · 23/05/2018 16:03

So long as the nurse did their job properly I couldn’t care less! I don’t judge people on things like this!

il0vew1ne · 23/05/2018 16:04

no I would not, but they look disgusting in my opinion

BlueJava · 23/05/2018 16:04

No, wouldn't think anything of it.

polarpercy · 23/05/2018 16:05

Wouldn't bother me. The nurse who was part of the team that saved my life when I had sepsis had a nose stud and lots of tattoos. She was wonderful and actually listened to me when I was put up on the ward unlike others.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/05/2018 16:06

Agree with Summerinrome.

I wouldn't 'judge', as such, and it wouldn't 'bother' me, as such, but... oh, I know how ubiquitous they are these days and everything, but I just really dislike them and find them unpleasant to look at and, tbh, a bit icky, and I'd rather not have them close to me when someone's dealing with me medically. (And I'm a lot younger than my username might suggest to those who don't know the reference).

I don't mean to be rude - you asked, I answered.

Stephisaur · 23/05/2018 16:06

I probably wouldn't even notice to be honest!

I only realised my NDN had tattoos the other day when we were chatting and I noticed them on his forearms. We've been neighbours for 4 years!

kateandme · 23/05/2018 16:07

some of my best carers and nurses ive met have had tatoos.one bloke has them all over.had the big wholes in his ears.and chin piercing that he squirted water out of at us!he is in my mind 20 years later as one of the kindest funniest best nurses ive met.and go so far as to say he saved my life being who he was.
so no.
infact im now going back through all of my best ones and on all of them ithink they had a tatoo of some sort...

crunchymint · 23/05/2018 16:07

I would wonder why you had limited your employment opportunities. Generally it is better if you can cover up tattoos.
I would expect nearly everyone on here to say they are fine with tattoos. But plenty of employers do not like visible tattoos. And that becomes even more the case as you move into higher status and more prestige roles.

DextroDependant · 23/05/2018 16:08

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. The only thing that puts me off any any nurse is the reluctance to give out adequate pain relief. Yea that is the man who left me to suffer with Two broken jaws.... i will never forget!!

CuppaSarah · 23/05/2018 16:12

I don't like them personally, but don't mind them on other people. These days they're so common place I wouldn't really register them. Unless it was a big dick on your forehead or something

Fastgirl · 23/05/2018 16:12

Only if they had tattooed...FUCK OFF PATIENT SCUM!

SummerbodyIwish · 23/05/2018 16:12

I am a nursing lecturer. The uniform policy at the university where I work states that tattoos must be covered up when students are in uniform in support of the professional image of nursing
