to never bleach our door frames?

Just came across this on another thread.

So many questions.

OP posts:
OohMavis · 22/05/2018 08:44

Depends if you're an indoor smoker.

I cleaned my mother's house when she went into hospital so it was ready for her to come home and bleach was the only thing that sorted the layer of nicotene coating everything! Everything that was beige went white.

Moonkissedlegs · 22/05/2018 08:45

Wouldn't bleaching the door frames strip the paint? Same with zoflora? I was using diluted zoflora on our kitchen table until I realised it was stripping the varnish.

Bleach is for bogs only really.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 22/05/2018 08:58

I don't think I have ever wiped down a door frame unless they've got something specifically on them, or I'm planning to paint.

Don't do my skirting boards either.

I refuse to believe it's a thing I (or anyone else in the house) should be doing

kattekitt · 22/05/2018 09:01

My dad was a painter and decorater and he used to swear by sugar soap - not something I’ve looked at since being an adult but @Ooh Mavis reminded me apparently it was great for removing nicotine stains, maybe it will help with yellowing gloss? Anybody know about sugar soap? Is it a miracle? (I can’t ask my darling dad as he passed away years ago)

formerbabe · 22/05/2018 09:14

I painted my skirting boards fairly recently with white gloss. No one in our house smokes yet the paint is really looking yellow. I hate it. I go round to other people's houses and their paintwork is sparkling white. How do they do it? Is there a product I'm not using or does everyone else paint their skirting and doorframes every month?!

StaplesCorner · 22/05/2018 09:18

I knew I'd brought my yellow paint to the right place.

As for the person who didn't know what Zoflora is ... feels superior ....

StaplesCorner · 22/05/2018 09:23

We used sugar soap spray on our kitchen walls a few weeks ago as they were in such bad condition, that's lining paper with kitchen paint over it, and it seems ok - it didn't cause any damage and the grease was certainly removed but I wouldn't do it on anywhere that I couldn't cope if it was damaged if that makes sense.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 22/05/2018 10:00

I've never bleached my door frames either. If they need it they get a Hoover or dust usually using a babywipe

Heartofglass12345 · 22/05/2018 10:10

Formerbabe satinwood is meant to be better for staying white. From about ages 11 my mum used to make me wash the doors and frames EVERY WEEK. sometimes with bleach, sometimes just washing up liquid. Safe to say I do not wash the ones in my house now!

formerbabe · 22/05/2018 10:23

Heartofglass12345. Thanks for the tip!

Heartofglass12345 · 22/05/2018 10:36

I haven't actually tried it but we've bought some for when we decorate, if we ever do lol. But I've heard good things about it Smile

Oblomov18 · 22/05/2018 10:53

Once a year I get the ds's to wipe the skirting boards with Costco wipes. That's it. Agree the yellow is grim though.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/05/2018 11:07

Wat.

StaplesCorner · 22/05/2018 12:11

Oblomov are your DSs available to hire for wiping skirting boards?

InDubiousBattle · 22/05/2018 13:01

Disturbingly, I haven't wiped our skirting boards for a week now. If I went and run my finger along one there would be dust one it so they need doing this week. Are we just a particularly dusty household?

bonnyshide · 22/05/2018 13:03

Bleaching door frames? Huh?

IncyWincyMouseRat · 22/05/2018 13:06

People have time for that?!

I’m not keen on the idea of living in a sterile environment. People at work are vaguely horrified that I will eat food I have dropped on an unwiped surface... I reckon the immunity is good for the baby! 😂

Lilyhatesjaz · 22/05/2018 14:06

I could do that this afternoon but there are online games to play, books I haven't read yet, a garden to sit in so you see I really don't have the time.

Oblomov18 · 22/05/2018 14:10

Staples i'll ask. Wink
they do it begrudgingly.
And then when we did have a HUGE BBQ, ds2 announced:
"its been awful, I've spent all week cleaning, wiping the skirting boards."
I nearly died. Blush

BeyondThePage · 22/05/2018 14:48

formerbabe was beaten to it - we have Satinwood paintwork - 4 years old - still proper white.

(though we don't like decorating, so some rooms have gloss that is 17 years old - that is no longer proper white)

Thanks for the info. Will definitely have to try the satinwood. I get serious skirting board envy in other people's houses!

mummyhaschangedhername · 22/05/2018 15:31

I used to, and skirting boards. Never seem to have the time these days. I also am currently looking at a cobweb I really need to take care of, but instead i am on here.

StaplesCorner · 22/05/2018 17:40

I haven't got Satinwood Sad I've just had my house entirely refurbished in cheap gloss. sigh

formerbabe · 22/05/2018 17:51

StaplesCorner Fingers crossed for you. Mine was yellowing after less than a year. Looks like I smoke 100 a day...in actual fact, in the five years I've lived in my house no one has ever smoked a cigarette in it.

strawberry1122 · 22/05/2018 19:14

Never even cleaned the door frames before let alone bleach them. I like to think i'm relatively good with cleaning too but door frames have never even entered my line of thought. I always thought bleach was not meant to be used on wood anyway? Presuming everyone's door frames are wooden like ours.
