To think it's not fluffy 90s pop, but creepy asf?

So, 'You're Gorgeous" (Babybird) was on the radio today in the car. Naturally, I turned it up.
Was singing along, (dc in back) and it struck me that it's actually a very creepy song and not a happy 90s pop tune.. got me thinking, what other songs that were acceptable back in the day probably wouldn't make the cut today?

The 80s song, 'I touch myself', comes to mind... lol

AIBU Or what other old songs do you think are, in retrospect, creepy asf? 🤔🤣

Blurred lines eughhhh the guy even looks like a creep.Radiogets turned over every time

MiddleClassProblem · 22/05/2018 21:32

Hold me close don't ever let me go

To me it reads as the partner is old and not very tactile and all they want is some bloody affection! 😂

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 21:47

To me it reads as the partner is old and not very tactileGrin Damn those old partners and their lack of hugs!

Smiling Yes, I think that must be right. Never mind that the rest of the song has nothing even remotely suggestive of that sorta thing!

B*wiched Cest la vie.

That was aimed at teens Shock

Shadow666 · 22/05/2018 22:45

Sorry, just realized this is page 12 so someone might have already said that one.

dustarr73 · 22/05/2018 23:01

Whats wrong with B* Witched Cest la Vie

Shadow666 · 22/05/2018 23:06

Well, it’s all about shagging which might not seem creepy but I think there is something creepy about using those lyrics in a song aimed at tweens when they probably don’t really understand what they are singing about. Especially when these songs are often written and produced by older men.

SmilingButClueless · 22/05/2018 23:18

Shadow I felt the same about Steps covering Chain Reaction. Nothing wrong with the song itself, but not really one you’d want small children / tweens singing

CourtneyLovely · 22/05/2018 23:39

Really nobody else thinks that More Than Words is saying that telling me you love me isn't enough, you need to show me hint hint?

NearLifeExperience · 22/05/2018 23:53

Really nobody else thinks that More Than Words is saying that telling me you love me isn't enough, you need to show me hint hint?

It is saying that, but not saying (necessarily) sex. It's about being affectionate and demonstrative. It also makes the point that you can't just throw "I love you" at a situation to improve it/ get forgiveness. You have to let your love be known by other means too.
Quite right too, really

notacooldad · 23/05/2018 00:09

Really nobody else thinks that More Than Words is saying that telling me you love me isn't enough, you need to show me hint hint

Still not a contender for creepy.

FairfaxAikman · 23/05/2018 00:27

Also my DH refuses to listen to Mr Brightside by The Killers because he found out that the track was apparently about paedophilia. That was something I must admit I didn't know until he told me.

It's about an ex-girlfriend of the lead singer, who cheated on him. The band have said this in interviews repeatedly.

Only thing I can think of is someone has misinterpreted the "sick lullabies" lyrics.

spacecadet · 23/05/2018 01:15

I don't think any of these are as bad as The Misfits One Last Caress, which no one has mentioned yet. The lyrics are just plain nasty imo and yet because the tune is so catchy, it keeps getting played.

MiddleClassProblem · 23/05/2018 01:23

But I can remember singing pop songs in the playground and not understanding the lyrics but just enjoying them.

The spice girls did 2 become one very early on with a young fan base.

S Club has the odd lyric that implied sex.

Hell, nearly every boyband in the 90s sang about sex and we’re aimed at teenage girls.

Kids who don’t know what they’re saying don’t pick up on it. I don’t think it makes a song creepy.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 23/05/2018 07:36

LOL at More than Words being creepy

Yes, it is about physical affection, is that bad?

How do you feel about Mousse T " me so horny" or OLivia NJ "let's get physical", is that creepy filth?

Is sex per se creepy?! Is any man or woman wanting sex a pervert? Is MN indeed a vicar's wife tea party? Grin

NearLifeExperience · 23/05/2018 08:00

Has anyone actually been able to come up with a song that's genuinely creepy in amongst the songs about sex, or innocent songs that happen to feature children?

ReanimatedSGB · 23/05/2018 08:45

Nick Cave and Kylie Wild Roses is pretty creepy. Mind you, Olivia NJ's Banks of the Ohio isn't much better. Though the thing is, both those songs are meant to be unsettling.

NearLifeExperience · 23/05/2018 09:02

Ah, yes, Reanimated, and in a very similar vein to those two: "Delilah" (think someone did actually mention that upthread) and "Ruby, don't take your love to town" both of which feature killing or threats to kill lovers. Charming.

MiddleClassProblem · 23/05/2018 09:41

Honestly that All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You song is genuinely fucked up. I’d never heard of it before but the lyrics are basically.

Lady see some fit bloke hitch hiking in the rain, gives him a lift, they got to a hotel and shag. All fine, no issues there.

In the morning she leaves before he wakes but leaves a note saying “I am the flower you are the seed
We walked in the garden we planted a tree
Don't try to find me, please don't you dare”

Then years later she and her child bump into him and she had to explain that she got up the duff by him because her partner who she dearly loves is infertile...

MiddleClassProblem · 23/05/2018 09:44

But Delilah is a dramatic song about murder... it’s like a play or a parody.

Moonkissedlegs · 23/05/2018 09:59

Lol at Mr Brightside being about paedophilia, wtf? 😂

However, if we are talking Killers songs, then 'Jenny was a Friend of Mine' is defo a creepy song about a murdered woman.

CadyHeron · 23/05/2018 10:01

Maybe songwriters from now on should stick to songs about fluffy kittens or dancing in fields a 'la the Sound Of Music?! Grin
This thread's funny.

CadyHeron · 23/05/2018 10:03

Ah, posted too soon. Meant to say as well that most of the most powerful songs are ones that play to your emotions, and emotions such as love, anger, unrequited love etc all make good songs. If we stuck to fluffy bunny type ones that'd be bloody boring and meh lol

Jonsey79 · 23/05/2018 10:53

Chase & Status, Let You Go...

There's nowhere to run
No place you can go
Nowhere you can hide
Where you won't be found
There's no place on earth
Where you could lay low
Wherever you are
I will track you down
There's no way in hell
I will let you leave
Let you just get up
And walk out on me
There's no way on earth
Hell would have to freeze
More than twice before
I will let you go!

What. The. Fuck.
