To think it's not fluffy 90s pop, but creepy asf?

So, 'You're Gorgeous" (Babybird) was on the radio today in the car. Naturally, I turned it up.
Was singing along, (dc in back) and it struck me that it's actually a very creepy song and not a happy 90s pop tune.. got me thinking, what other songs that were acceptable back in the day probably wouldn't make the cut today?

The 80s song, 'I touch myself', comes to mind... lol

AIBU Or what other old songs do you think are, in retrospect, creepy asf? 🤔🤣

I don’t think liquid Dreams is creepy either. It’s just about having a wet dream and imagining a dream girl.

I’m not sure normal sexual experiences and encounters count as creepy...

Tanith · 22/05/2018 17:17

“oh and Peaches by the Stranglers”

A good percentage of their early catalogue was highly questionable, but the one I’ve always found most chilling was the coda to Burning Up Time:
“Hello little girl!
Are you alone?
Does your mummy know where you are?”
Would you like a sweetie?”

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 22/05/2018 17:30

@MissionImpossible umm I was saying I knew that for sure, Hmm having seen it stated that they intended to write a song to shock and went for it. Some of the earlier seem posters just seemed a bit shocked at the thought.

I was also quite young when Blue were at their peak- wouldn't have necessarily got this until hearing it again when older.

Virgin Sexy by the Sugar Babes is an interesting one- it's not creepy per se, as the girl wants to lose her virginity, but she's also a bit nervous. Sums being 16 up pretty well, I think.

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 17:41

What the flip is wrong with "Don't You Want Me?" Sure the "narrator" is a bit deluded, but it's not even remotely creepy or shocking.
This thread is like being in a parallel universe.

MrsAngle · 22/05/2018 18:00

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Black Heart by Stooshe.
Yes girls, you stay with the mean scary man because he's a good shag.
Awful song.

notacooldad · 22/05/2018 18:13

Has any one engined Eminem?
Some of his early stuff was rather sinister!

Another song I find to listen to is Mr tinkerman by Ozzy. It's from a brilliant album but I feel uncomfortable even liking the tune!

ALongHardWinter · 22/05/2018 18:23

It never cease to amaze me the number of people who think that the song 'Every breath you take',(originally by The Police, and later covered by a rap artist whose name I can't remember) is a romantic song. It's about stalking ffs.

MiddleClassProblem · 22/05/2018 19:04

Diddlers and Faith Evans for B.I.G

VioletCharlotte · 22/05/2018 19:05

A lot of these aren't creepy at all. They're blatantly about sex, but so what?

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 19:18

Last time there was one of these threads (they come around once a year or so), someone said "Making Your Mind Up" by Buck Fizz was shocking as it is actually about anal sex. Hmm

No. No it isn't.

Nonamesleft14 · 22/05/2018 19:26

Fine young cannibals (I think)
She drives me crazy
He can't help himself apparently 🤔

ReanimatedSGB · 22/05/2018 19:44

Again, the idea of loving/fancying someone so much that you lose control/can't help yourself isn't inherently 'problematic'. People talk and think (and sing and write) about how desire can send you a bit mad, and it doesn't invariably mean that you're going to do something unacceptable to another person. Just like all those songs about lusting, and wanting to have sex, and asking someone if you can have sex with them aren't evidence of evildoing.
Don't forget that a lot of people like the idea of being the one desired to the point of madness - there are surely a few more of us on this thread who remember getting a little overexcited at the thought that [fave musician] was singing to us about all the things said musician was desperate to do with us...

SmilingButClueless · 22/05/2018 19:48

I always just thought this song was a bit twee, but had assumed it was about college students / professors. However the actress singing it to / with Bing Crosby can’t have been more than 14 at the time and he would have been in his 30s. Which makes it quite creepy imo.

You're sophisticated
I think I'm naive
Well, let's play the game that way
Yes, that's what I believe

An apple for the teacher
That seems the thing to do
Because I want a learn
About romance from you
An apple for the teacher
Just to show that I'm meek and mild
If you insist on saying
That I'm just a problem child
You're gonna get all my attention
And your wish will be my rule
And maybe you'll be good to me
Just keep me after school
An apple for the teacher
That's how I'd better start
Then after awhile you may give in
And let me bring my heart

Notevilstepmother · 22/05/2018 20:08

I didn’t find “Don’t stand so close to me” creepy, it didn’t condone what happened, and at that point in time it was something that was happening quite a lot. The man that went on to be chief inspector of schools was well known for having sex with a sixth former while his wife was pregnant for example. At least it brought the topic up for discussion, it was a time for breaking taboos.

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 20:13

But of course. The thought of being the object of such love/lust/desire is quite exhilarating, especially when the song is performed by a favourite or at least attractive performer.

The "she" who drives him crazy isn't real, she's a fantasy figure. Or perhaps someone real who's been idealised, and whose faults he is blinded to. It's just an exploration and release, a fantasy. And "I can't help myself" could refer to me when there is Biscoff spread in the house. Not creepy just sad and greedy
Though I wasn't a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen in my teens, when he sang "Hey little girl is your daddy home... I've got a bad desire.. I'm on fire" I used to come over all unnecessary and want to be the one to extinguish him.

notacooldad · 22/05/2018 20:14

Bloody hell nomameleft
I really think you are reading too much into FYC's Dtives Me Crazy!

What do you think he means when he says he can't help himself.
The song implies he's crazy about someone and he can't help it!
I think most of us have been besotted with someone where they obsessively think about some one , they can't help it.

CourtneyLovely · 22/05/2018 20:55

Not RTFT but has anyone mentioned More Than Words by Extreme? Everyone thought it was such a beautiful song but all I hear in it is "if you love me like you say you do, then fuck me..."

CourtneyLovely · 22/05/2018 20:59

But a couple that I did notice - I think Claire by Gilbert O'Sullivan is just a nice song devoted to a child he babysat. I used to love the line "I'm going to marry you, will you marry me Uncle Ray?" (His real name) because I had an Uncle Ray too!

And isn't Little Children by Billy J Kramer about a teenager trying to get some alone time with his girlfriend but they're surrounded by her little brothers and sisters?

Not every song that mentions a child is disgusting...

notacooldad · 22/05/2018 21:13

No one has mentioned it because I think it's just you!
I've googled the lyrics on a couple of sites and played it on YouTube but it's not there.

I don't think it can count as a contender for being creepyAF!

VioletCharlotte · 22/05/2018 21:16

@PartyFearsII
'Making your mind up' about anal sex! That's hilarious Grin

GrumbleBumble · 22/05/2018 21:18

More Than Words
Extreme
Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
More than words
La di da, da di da
La di da, da di da, more than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
La di da, da di da, more than words (oh uh uh uh)
More than words

I don't know what song you are thinking of but it's not more than words

SinceWhenDid · 22/05/2018 21:18

More than words is just about wanting a cuddle Grin

SmilingButClueless · 22/05/2018 21:19

It does refer to not letting your inhibitions take you from behind, so maybe that’s where the confusion comes from

SmilingButClueless · 22/05/2018 21:20

My previous post was about Making Your Mind Up

GrumbleBumble · 22/05/2018 21:20

I did used to sing "cause I don't really care" in place of "cause I'd ready know" but only in jest.
