To think it's not fluffy 90s pop, but creepy asf?

So, 'You're Gorgeous" (Babybird) was on the radio today in the car. Naturally, I turned it up.
Was singing along, (dc in back) and it struck me that it's actually a very creepy song and not a happy 90s pop tune.. got me thinking, what other songs that were acceptable back in the day probably wouldn't make the cut today?

The 80s song, 'I touch myself', comes to mind... lol

AIBU Or what other old songs do you think are, in retrospect, creepy asf? 🤔🤣

Chocolate salty balls!

rainbowdashflip · 22/05/2018 12:25

Chocolate salty balls Hmm

It came from SOUTHPARK fgs. It wasn't mainstream pop

MissionItsPossible · 22/05/2018 12:51

@DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops
For those mentioning "too close" by Blue, they most definitely are singing about grinding in night clubs and getting hard ons!

Of course it is! It's not subtle. They literally say this in the chorus. I'm a bit confused as to why some people on here are surprised at some of these Confused

@maygirl27 I think your husband needs to clarify.

lexiewrites · 22/05/2018 12:55

Perfect ten really???

So what about women having sex and enjoying it is creepy?

Looking at this thread, consensual sex is apparently creepy?

JoeElliotsMullet · 22/05/2018 13:07

Lots mentioned on here are creepy but I'm going to defend Does Your Mother Know? by Abba... he's basically saying yes, she's pretty but she's too young and he knows that and he's telling her to back off. I always imagine she's about 16 and snuck into a club on her sister's fake ID, he's happy to dance and chat but no more.

"I can see what you want
But you seem pretty young
to be searching for that kind of fun
So maybe I'm not the one
Now you're so cute, I like your style
And I know what you mean
when you give me a flash of that smile (smile)
But girl you're only a child"

FlirtyRomanticToast · 22/05/2018 13:14

I know it's kinda off topic but can I slip in a quick anecdote about inappropriate wedding songs, seeing as Every Breath You Take was mentioned?

DH organised a few CDs of music for our (obviously v small) wedding. He must've been in an odd mood when doing it (literally the night before) because the next day we were treated to the strains of R.E.M. wailing Everyyybody Huuuurts! Grin

So Everybody Hurts is officially our wedding song.

MrsDilber · 22/05/2018 13:15

Got to say, I love this song. I'm sure there was a reason why they wrote it, obviously about prostitution. It's a really upbeat, brilliant, tune, the words are so sad.

The Fratellis, Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night

Whistle for the boys now don't be shy
Give us all a song and a reason why
Baby got the bones and a hand me down
Says her heart is black but her eyes are brown
Give the boys a flash and they'll love you so
Give the girl some cash cause your mother said so
And take em out to look at the queen
And any old girl who's in between
Lay yourself down by the side of the bed
Oh you naughty girl you know you tickle me red
You look so dumb and you sound so twee
And you can only wish that you were married to me
Well, that's what you get
Oh don't get upset
Ridiculous you
Waiting in the queue oh whoopee doo
You could have been
The best that I've seen
Under the red light
Everybody knows you cried last night
Give us all a go till your face turns red
Little Greg said you went home instead
If you stick around you'll get an alibi
And we'll try and keep your pretty face bone dry
Rent a honey rent a honey one two three
Keeping all the boys from your door cant be easy
Well ruby said she was wrecked
But you were never well behaved the last time I checked

ReanimatedSGB · 22/05/2018 13:31

OK, some songs are a bit creepy, but there's nothing wrong with, for instance, 'I Touch Myself'. It's a woman singing about how she fancies this bloke so much she thinks about him whenever she has a wank. Perfectly ordinary behaviour. Quite a lot of the songs people are whining about are songs about lust, desire, good sex, being dumped, unrequited love and how that can make people behave stupidly...
I remember a lot of people getting in an awful lather about (That's the rude version btw) but it's just a very crude way of saying 'You cheated on me, I am really hurt and sad, and very angry, which is why I'm going to call you a lot of rude names.' Again, not an unreasonable set of feelings.

FindoGask · 22/05/2018 13:32

Every time I read one of these threads I wonder what happened to Babybird, google him, find out, then forget all about it.

Lucisky · 22/05/2018 13:33

I'm going to show my age here, but... from 1964, Billy J Kramer and the song 'Little Children'.
Sorry, I am no good at links, but it is available online.
It is easily misinterpreted, and I remember first thinking the lyrics were odd in the early 70s.
It is 'of its time', and today it would cause a bit of a storm I would think.
Sorry, a bit away from the original topic.

zippey · 22/05/2018 13:37

I live Springsteen but there is a less well known song called “Fire” (note- NOT “I’m on Fire”

  • you say you don’t like it, but girl you’re a liar, cos when we kiss, ooh Fire
CadyHeron · 22/05/2018 13:41

I love Heart's All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You, one of my all time favourite songs!

noeffingidea · 22/05/2018 14:03

Agree with Dustarr and Partyfears. Some people on here just come across as really weird. If a song has 'baby' in the lyrics do you interpret that about referring to an actual baby or something? I suspect some of you do.

goodnessidontknow · 22/05/2018 14:16

Perfect Ten is about loving someone how they are even if that isn't physically perfect. How is that creepy or have I missed something!

dustarr73 · 22/05/2018 14:17

I always thought Perfect Ten was about loving someone warts and all.

confusedofengland · 22/05/2018 14:29

She Said by the Longpigs. One of my favourite ever songs, but I didn't realise until recently that it's about (I think) a prostitute who ends up being killed Sad

ReanimatedSGB · 22/05/2018 14:39

I'm another one who thinks Perfect 10 is about loving your partner even though s/he doesn't look like a supermodel. Nothing remotely creepy or nasty about that.

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 14:45

But Perfect 10 is creepy and nasty because it alludes to sex.

And sex is creepy and nasty, only practised by perverts, and certainly not for singing about!

ChuffMuffin · 22/05/2018 14:49

My Sharona by The Knack is bloody creepy if you listen to the lyrics. Used to love that song.

Ooh, my little pretty one, my pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona
Ooh, you make my motor run, my motor run
Got it coming off o' the line, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Sharona

Come a little closer, huh, a-will ya, huh?
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keeping it a mystery, it gets to me
Running down the length of my thigh, Sharona

Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up, for the touch of the younger kind
My, my, my, aye-aye, whoa!
M-m-m-my Sharona
M-m-m-my Sharona

When you gonna give to me, a gift to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona?
Is it d-d-destiny, d-destiny
Or is…

RexManning · 22/05/2018 14:53

The real Sharona is now a realtor (estate agent) in LA and uses www.mysharona.com as the address for her business's webpage.

ReanimatedSGB · 22/05/2018 15:01

Let's not forget that some of the most beautiful, romantic-sounding songs were written by abusive alcoholics, or worse...

TBH too many people are a bit too fucking precious. Some songs tell stories or set a mood that neither the singer nor the songwriter genuinely feel or would genuinely want to act on (obviously there are songs written for people the songwriter wanted to shag, as well, but a lot are just generic). Some songs (like books, films, plays, poetry) cover unpleasant subject matter that the person creating them is intrigued by and wants to explore. Nearly all art is about sex, death, joy or vengeance, anyway...

Blobby10 · 22/05/2018 15:09

The Abba song that others have mentioned; Does your Mother Know? - I can only ever listen to that and see the scenes in Mamma Mia when Christine whatsits character was flirting with one of the young men who had a crush on her - I found it very funny!

MipMipMip · 22/05/2018 15:58

Me too Blobby - love that scene. Not a fan of the film but that (and tte end credits) make up for the rest.

maygirl27 · 22/05/2018 16:17

@MissionItsPossible

I must admit I'm not quite sure where he got that information and will ask him. Listening to the lyrics, I get the impression that it's about a one-night stand - but then I could be wrong...

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 22/05/2018 16:40

Sorry, Perfect 10 isn't creepy (apologies) but I think it's funny how it sounds like a cute song but is actually pretty rude!
