To think it's not fluffy 90s pop, but creepy asf?

So, 'You're Gorgeous" (Babybird) was on the radio today in the car. Naturally, I turned it up.
Was singing along, (dc in back) and it struck me that it's actually a very creepy song and not a happy 90s pop tune.. got me thinking, what other songs that were acceptable back in the day probably wouldn't make the cut today?

The 80s song, 'I touch myself', comes to mind... lol

AIBU Or what other old songs do you think are, in retrospect, creepy asf? 🤔🤣

Not 90s but the most bizarre backstory I heard for a song is 'My Lady d'Arbanville' by Cat Stevens.
He sings of his love lying dead in her coffin.

It was written about his real life girlfriend Patti d'Arbanville who had gone to NY for a few weeks to work as a model.
She told the story that she turned the radio on and heard her boyfriend singing about her death!
Needless to say she dumped him...

I've always loved the song though. Grin

I haven't rtft but I like kids bop! They take out the sexual stuff and change it for more kid friendly lyrics. I much prefer my DD singing the kids bop version of songs!

StripySocksAndDocs · 22/05/2018 08:16

@GrumbleBumble, I didn't say it was creepy. Just that people consider it a love song when it isn't. (As an example after I say how people use songs inappropriately.)

TomPinch · 22/05/2018 08:20

sashh

The song is about what the lyrics say. Which is a scenario about a girl and a teacher who give in to a mutual crush, and the fallout (which is bad for both of them). Pretty straight forward. No need to read in hidden messages.

(In response to another post) nothing in the lyrics suggesting the girl is some sort of preditor.

Not a creepy song, and one whose message has kept well.

Binkytheslug

I haven't had a reply from you re this link, which you think demonstrates that Sex Dwarf is about under-she girls.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/thump.vice.com/amp/en_uk/article/9ajkk5/soft-cell-sex-dwarf

I've read it twice and can only assume you're referring to this bit:

When I spoke to Marc about the Record Store Day release for this piece he made it clear that he now regards Sex Dwarf as juvenilia "from a very bad time in my life,"

I can only assume you think that "juvenilia" is a polite word for "paedophilia", which is wrong.

Sex Dwarf is just a big bacchanal, involving, amongst other things, a dwarf. Great song.

sashh · 22/05/2018 08:29

nothing in the lyrics suggesting the girl is some sort of preditor.

She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be

Put with

This girl is half his age

So it's a mid 20s student teacher singing about a girl of how old?

TomPinch · 22/05/2018 08:32

It's in the third person. The teacher isn't singing it.

And do you think that having a crush on a teacher makes you a predator? Really?

MiddleClassProblem · 22/05/2018 08:41

Omg! I hadn’t heard the All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You song.

I read the first verse of lyrics and thought, that’s not so bad. She’s just going for a fuck. What’s the problem? Is it because she’s a woman? No idea why she mentions love at first sight...

And then I read the second verse. Er...omg, did she just?

And then the third.
WTAF! She did! And then she tries to justify it! Fucking crazy lady! Just a reminder that hitchhiking can result in either gender being taken advantage of...

O-Town - Liquid Dreams

Posters of love surrounding me, lost in the world of fantasy
Every night she comes to me and gives me all the love I need.

Now this hot girl, she's not your average girl
She's a morpharotic dream from a magazine
And she's so fine designed to blow your mind
She's a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen

I dream about a girl who's a mix of Destiny's Child
Just a little touch Madonna's wild style
With Janet Jackson's smile, throw in a body like Jennifers'
You've got the star of my liquid dream

Hmm

Also Billy Ocean - Get out of my dreams, get into my car

The Human League - don’t you want me

‘You better change it back or we will both be sorry’ ....... Nope!

Pinksun12 · 22/05/2018 09:24

You'll never stop me from loving you by Sonia

Sounds like a stalkers anthem

dustarr73 · 22/05/2018 09:28

I dont understand why you take the song lyrics so literal. Most spngs are about past experiences, embellished to make the song sound better.

I just dont get the pearl clutching on this thread about these songs.

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 10:03

I'm also a bit Confused by posters pointing out that some songs are about, shock sex. So what? Songs about sex are fine. Sex is fine. Rather nice, actually. It's not creepy at all.

Someone was shocked by Gilbert O Sullivan's "Claire" because it's about a man babysitting a little girl. There are absolutely no "implications" in that song whatsoever.. how silly.
In "I drove all night" he (and 'she' when Cyndi Lauper sang it) explicitly seeks consent "Is that alright?" several times in the song, and it's about a couple in a relationship anyway. It's not stalkerish or rapey.
In "Young Girl" it's her that's duped him, and when he finds out he's shocked, and tells her to get out of his life. How does that make him bad?

I agree about the vicars' wives' tea-party!

I dunno but the blurred lines video makes me vomit. Pretty sure it didn't get enough stick for being a vile piece of misogynistic shit. The girls in it are fucking pathetic and the men obs have micro willys

PartyFearsII · 22/05/2018 10:20

Now "Blurred Lines" is definitely worth complaining about. It is creepy, misogynist and awful.

GhettoFabulous · 22/05/2018 10:30

Milkshake by Kellis is not about a delicious dairy-based beverage, Who knew?

notacooldad · 22/05/2018 10:51

Those of you that think the Blured Lines official video is bad, have you seen the explicit one?
Awful.
Emily Ratajkoski and the other woman are lollying around in a nude throng and a pair of shoes while Pharrell and Tobin Thick look as pervy AF.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 22/05/2018 11:03

Yamayo I've always loved My Lady d'Arbanville! It does sound like he's singing about necrophilia though!

GabsAlot · 22/05/2018 11:05

i love dont you want me its a classic

dustarr73 · 22/05/2018 11:58

The thing about Blurred Lines video. The women in it are adults and made that choice to be in that video.

robotcartrainhat · 22/05/2018 12:03

I always thought the women in the blurred lines video looked like they were taking the piss out of the men tbh? They all look really sarcastic and bored....

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 22/05/2018 12:07

The video for Duran Duran's Electric Barbarella is pretty horrendous.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 22/05/2018 12:12

Beautiful South, Perfect 10

When he's at my gate, with a big fat 8
You want to see the smile on my face
And even at my door, with a poor poor 4
There ain't no man can replace

If he's extra large well I'm in charge
I can work this thing on top
If he's XXL well what the hell
Every penny don't fit the slot

Always makes me Shock
