To want wife to go away for a few days?

My DW has a trip to one of Europe's major cities planned with our DD (recently a toddler) staying with her parents in a very small apartment. I am not going, instead I booked a couple of days of work to coincide with their trip, during which I would mainly sit around in my pants at home watching movies I haven't been able to watch (because OH hates sci-fi), take the dog for long walks while I listen to podcasts, and generally savour some time without daddy/ husband duties. In the last few days DD has had extremely disrupted nights, waking up at three in the morning, screaming for no apparent reason and generally doing what toddlers do.. As a result DW is having second thoughts about going away for a week, where she and DD would be sharing quite a confined space with the in-laws. I want to encourage her to go, because I think she will enjoy it regardless, and also because I am looking forward to some time to myself. AIBU?

...and I bet there'll be a drip-feed of more details to send everyone ballistic.

Are you being unreasonable for wanting your wife and DD to piss off for a week so you can have some time to yourself? Well, yes, but actually as a parent myself I can understand why you have this desire to be selfish and have some peace and quiet. I mean, don't we all long for those pre-child days when we could just do as we pleased without any responsibilities? Get up when we want? Potter around without anyone getting at you? I know I savour every single moment when I can just be an independent adult without any calls on my time.

So, no, IMO YANBU, but I think to qualify for that you're going to have to grant your DW the same treat at some point in the future and give her the opportunity for a few child-free days, because it is absolute bliss! Will her parents be helpful with your DD? Will they let your wife go out for a bit on her own so she has at least a bit of a holiday? If yes, then definitely encourage her to go. Phases with toddlers come and go, and she may sleep well on holiday. But do offer to take your DD to your parents for a few days at some point so she can enjoy what you're so looking forward to now.

OP.

Put the keyboard down and walk away from the thread. Men aren't deserving of breaks, ever.

Hellbentwellwent · 18/05/2018 11:28

Smh, are you serious???

you scratch your balls for three days and watch short sci-fi back to back on Netflix while your wife gets stressed and knackered for three days on no sleep with a cranky toddler. Yup that’s sounds peachy.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 18/05/2018 11:29

YANBU to want some alone time, just make sure your wife gets some at some point too (nothing to suggest you don't, it's just best to be fair!)

I don't imagine the in-laws will be pleased if his DW leaves the child at home. I bet they're just as excited to see her as they are their daughter

Juells · 18/05/2018 11:30

You're very gullible if you think this is a genuine cry from the heart 🤨

Trinity66 · 18/05/2018 11:31

I think you're missing the point, of course everyone would like a break and time to their self, the problem is he wants to pack his wife off to a different country in an apartment with little space to deal with a toddler who's going through a difficult night phase so he can have his. That's the problem, not wanting the time.

A4710Rider · 18/05/2018 11:32

She's going to visit her parents, I'm sure that was her idea, not his.

ichifanny · 18/05/2018 11:33

Not unreasonable as long as you both get time on your own to relax occasionally everyone needs a break . I’m an introvert and need my own space occasionally .

Racecardriver · 18/05/2018 11:33

YABU to pretend that you care about her feelings in this. You want her to go away and take your DD so that you can have a rest. If it's not unreasonable to want a rest at a bit it is unreasonable to push her into taking a really stressful trip so that you can have it.

eggncress · 18/05/2018 11:33

Your DD will probably be pampered by gp but even so, if you are getting a few days of “me” time then you should return the favour for your wife some time soon.If you are not willing to do this then yabu

Tattybear16 · 18/05/2018 11:35

Do you have a death wish? Man down over here, don’t get back up what ever you do. Invest in some armour you’re going to need it 😂

SomeKnobend · 18/05/2018 11:35

Yabu to pretend you think your wife will enjoy it, and to pretend you give a shit whether she does or not.

How transparent. Do people really think we can’t see right through them?

A4710Rider · 18/05/2018 11:39

As it happens, I have 3 days next weekend without DS as he's going on a mini cruise with his DGPs.

I feel blessed :)

bazingabazinga · 18/05/2018 11:40

As long as you do the same for your wife then YANBU in the slightest.

We all need a break from time to time. It’s the give and take that makes it equitable

cathf · 18/05/2018 11:42

Only mums are entitled to breaks on MN, for they are the only ones who actually need them.
