nutritionally they are not really better than normal potatos
and they taste awful

*They are not a carb but a vegetable. •

How ignorant, and demonstrative of the amount of nutritional ignorance out there.

Being a carbohydrate and being a vegetable are not mutually exclusive. Most vegetables do contain carbohydrates, and actually sweet potatoes and white potatoes contain about the same amount of carbohydrates per 100g.

trickyboots · 18/05/2018 07:50

I want to like them but I really hate them. However have bought the Asda chunky frozen cubed sweet potato and air fried with olive oil and salt. Very acceptable alongside a salad with dressing. Better than m and s or Waitrose sweet potato chips which I burn every time I make the skinny feckers.

JustDanceAddict · 18/05/2018 07:54

I’m not a fan really. Fine in soup
Or in a dish but on their own they’re too sweet for me! I have always preferred salad to cooked veg though.

TERFragetteCity · 18/05/2018 07:56

They are not a carb but a vegetable

Hi.

All edible plants are vegetables. Some edible plants store their [next year's] energy in their roots, as carbs. Sweet potatoes only have less carbs than actual potatoes, but they are still carbs.

OneStepOneStumble · 18/05/2018 07:56

Gosh I find them delicious and heard it's a good way of getting veg instead of just a carb fest if you're really craving chips! Which is precisely what I did last night having ham, egg and (sweet potato) chips and it was glorious.

If you don't want them there's more for me Grin

(I will concede that nothing will ever replace a good mash or chippy)

OneStepOneStumble · 18/05/2018 07:58

Also willing to concede that my scientific knowledge of carbs vs veg is probably lacking 😂

PuppetOnAString · 18/05/2018 08:11

Hate them, I don’t like sweet and savoury together anyway.

LittleMissMarker · 18/05/2018 08:14

I like sweet potatoes in curries. Never tried parsnips in a curry. Roast parsnips taste wonderful. But boiled parsnips - just why?

Always need to leave avocadoes for days to ripen up, even the "ready to eat" ones. (And try to catch them just before they go black) But then mash them up with lime juice - easiest guacomole ever and tastes gorgeous.

And I cannot understand kale at all. I enjoy most varieties of cabbage and spinach and broccoli and cauliflower and spring green and their relatives (even sprouts!) but nothing I can do will make kale edible. Vile, stringy stuff.

MargaretCavendish · 18/05/2018 08:20

I love sweet potato, and find a jacket sweet potato is better for me than a jacket normal potato, because I can eat a sweet potato with no butter, whereas I have to slather a normal potato in the stuff to stop it being so dry.

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 18/05/2018 08:25

roasted in the overn for 45 mins then loads of butter melted on (cheat day) or lots of chopped roasted veg and chicken on top with garlic and a bit of Olive oil -- gorgeous xxx

bluescreen · 18/05/2018 08:46

I had a bit of leftover sweet potato mash, added some Irish potato mash, mixed it together with some finely chopped spring onions, some de-boned and finely shredded kale (yes, kale! which is only fit to eat when it's been ruthlessly edited), a touch of chilli, an egg and flour to bind and coat to make patties. Fried up. Delicious!

But I admit I love sweet potatoes: mashed, roast, curried, sweet or savoury. The mistake is in regarding them as potatoes.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/05/2018 09:09

I reckon the same people like sweet potatos as like avocados.

That'll be me then Grin

I like baked sweet potato topped with cottage cheese, or rough mashed with a bit of crumbled feta stirred through.

TERFragetteCity · 18/05/2018 09:23

But in a head-to-head comparison, these two tubers are seemingly very similar. In a 100-gram portion, the white potato has 92 calories, 21 grams of carbs, 2.3 grams of dietary fiber, 2.3 g of protein and 17% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C. The same amount of sweet potato, on the other hand, has 90 calories, 21 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein, 35% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 380% of the daily recommended value of vitamin A.

They have virtually the same carbs...you've been sold a pup.

Strugglingtodomybest · 18/05/2018 09:25

My shepherds pie: lamb mince, onion, tinned tomatoes, veg stock, harissa paste, topped with sweet potato mash.

Delish!

o0o0 · 18/05/2018 10:21

@InfiniteSheldon marmite toasties?????? Please explain! 🤤

LaurieMarlow · 18/05/2018 10:23

I'm not a big fan, find them far too sweet.

They're ok in soups/curries, but that's really it.

LeighaJ · 18/05/2018 10:27

I also loathe sweet potatoes and have never understood why they're so loved by many.

Roomba · 18/05/2018 10:27

I'm laughing at the idea that sweet potatoes are part of some vast conspiracy by the growers to convince us they are wonderful! Should we all band together to resist the propaganda and fight the menace of the sweet potato? Grin

Either you like them - in which case, eat them and enjoy the flavour - or you don't, in which case just don't buy them!

formerbabe · 18/05/2018 10:35

My shepherds pie: lamb mince, onion, tinned tomatoes, veg stock, harissa paste, topped with sweet potato mash

Sounds delicious!

sashh · 18/05/2018 10:38

It's true that I like both sweet potatoes and avocados. But I hate asparagus. Is that relevant?

I can't stand avocados but I do like asparagus

I think avocados were invented circa 2004, I'd put sweet potatos at 2008.

Nope avocados were invented in the 1970s, very Abigail's party, they even had special serving dishes.

It was so trendy it became the colour of choice for bathrooms.

Other 1970s 'classics' were grapefruit sprinkled with brown sugar and lightly grilled, also with their own bowl and knife and orange juice as a starter.

ladymabel · 18/05/2018 10:41

White flesh sweet potatoes are awesome, I get them from Sainsbury’s . Peel , chip , and roast in a bit of oil with herbs and salt and pepper. Yum

FindoGask · 18/05/2018 10:42

Not a fan. Give me actual potatoes any day.

tccat · 18/05/2018 11:30

Cliff Parsnips was a famous seventies pub singer, now forced by extreme poverty into being Nick Knowles backing singer

SenecaFalls · 18/05/2018 11:32

The mistake is in regarding them as potatoes.

Exactly. I think that most people know that they are a staple in the Southern US where I live, so much so that traditionally the other potato was called an Irish potato to distinguish it from sweet potatoes. Southern ways of cooking them just go with the sweetness, often making them sweeter, as in pies, souffles, and Thanksgiving casserole.

Sweet potato pie is really good. Similar to pumpkin pie, especially the spices used, but better.

UnicornRainbowColours · 18/05/2018 11:32

Their yummy and healthy and my 2 year old adores them
