I love a sweet potato as an alternative to a jacket potato (I do believe they have half the calories of a normal potato)

No butter but with a salty and spicy filling such as a chicken with a tandoori marinade or a low fat chilli. Plus lots of fresh crunch salad.

Heaven on a plate

Lisapops · 17/05/2018 23:30

Ginger parsnips 😂

Mycatiskillingme · 17/05/2018 23:32

Love sweet potatoes and avocado, I have been eating Avos since a child (not in England). They never sell them ripe enough here. Love them spread over toast.

Had sweet potato cottage pie for dinner sumptious.

Pippioddstocking · 17/05/2018 23:34

They are amazing , with chilli, garlic, sticky balsamic , feta cheese, rosemary , with meat with a rich port sauce , I could go on, I love then them.

SenecaFalls · 17/05/2018 23:35

Y'all need to try traditional Southern US sweet potato casserole traditionally served at Thanksgiving. Potatoes are baked, mashed with butter, flavored with cinnamon and nutmeg, put in a baking dish then covered with brown sugar, more butter, and chopped pecans and baked in the oven until the topping is bubbly and crisp. Only once a year for me, and no marshmallows please.

Imfinehowareyou · 17/05/2018 23:35

Niska I spiralise one potato and put in a bowl. Then I add a bit of oil (whatever you cook with) and a bit of salt and pepper and mix with my hand. I roast it in a tray then near the end of cooking time I make a little well in the middle and crack an egg in it. The egg gets baked. I actually do 2 potatoes worth and use 2 eggs it's that lovely!

Fatted · 17/05/2018 23:38

YABU. Sweet potato fries are delicious. Place by us does lovely loaded ones.

I don't pay any interest to the 'better for you' crap. Who cares? I'm going to eat them deep fried topped with bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce and loads of salt. That's sure to cancel anything 'good' out Grin

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 23:38

I LURVE sweet potatoes! How can anyone not love jacket sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries?!

Queenoftheblitz · 17/05/2018 23:41

Love them. I make a SP and chilli soup. They do have fewer cals than potatoes I'm sure.

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 23:41

Seneca falls, that sounds GOOD! Although a little on the sweet side, I'm more of it as a savoury dish!
Marshmallows? With sweet potatoes?! Too far lol

TonTonMacoute · 17/05/2018 23:42

Hate sweet potatoes, but I wish I liked them as they are supposed to be good for you.

Like parsnips, and love, love, love avocados, which have been around in Britain since the 1970s by the way.

BuntyII · 17/05/2018 23:44

YANBU sweet potatoes are horrid. Normal potatoes are delicious and good for you but people just pretend they aren't because they aren't trendy.

SenecaFalls · 17/05/2018 23:44

True, Cady. It's why we only have that once a year.

Some of the suggestions on here about adding hot spices to sweet potatoes sounds very appealing to me. I think I might try that. Sweet and hot is a good combination.

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 23:47

Sweet potato and chili yummy combination, I love eating that. So I can totally see adding spices would work!

gillybeanz · 17/05/2018 23:51

My dh can't eat potatoes and has sweet potato as an alternative, mashed as well.
I like them roasted or baked, the same as parsnips really.

bluescreen · 17/05/2018 23:52

OP, are you secretly from the Sweet Potato Marketing Board?

In what way are they a con? Its a vegetable - if you like them eat, if you don't like them don't eat. Like most veg they have nutritional value which adds to a varied diet.

Where is the con?

PosyFossilsShoes · 17/05/2018 23:54

Baked sweet potatoes with yoghurt and tahini sauce with a dash of lemon juice, and chilli. Fantastic combination.

I love normal potatoes too though.

Niska · 17/05/2018 23:54

@Imfinehowareyou - thanks, I will definitely give that a try. Thanks

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 23:58

Dammit, I really want a sweet jacket potato now Grin

Queenoftheblitz · 18/05/2018 00:02

I'm fucking starving...

ElspethTascioni · 18/05/2018 00:02

Baked sweet potato with feta. Mmmmmmm!

TuTru · 18/05/2018 00:05

High in Vitamin D
I’m not keen on them but vitamin d is hard to come by. Also I think they are a complex carb which is better for you than an ordinary carb because you’re body burns the energy slower and you will get less high to low blood sugar drops (or surges) so your mood will be more stable also.
I still don’t like them much tho.

MrsElla · 18/05/2018 00:06

They always taste gritty to me and very leathery. I dont get some people's obsession

CadyHeron · 18/05/2018 00:06

Feta? Melting into a sweet potato? I'm actually drooling Homer Simpson style at the thought Grin
