nutritionally they are not really better than normal potatos
and they taste awful

I disagree re the taste. Definitely taste better than normal spuds. I dice them up and put them in my vegetarian curry.

Queenoftheblitz · 18/05/2018 00:07

I created a west indian shepherds pie once - spiced up mince topped with SP mash. Made a nice change and i want some now.

Monty27 · 18/05/2018 00:08

They are overestimated little orange gits

anon99827 · 18/05/2018 00:08

I feel this way! I suspect l am ignorant on how they could be cooked to taste delicious though maybe?

CadyHeron · 18/05/2018 00:10

Queen of the blitz, that shepherd pie sounds amazing, never tried! Need to though. Reminds me of a Levi Roots recipe I saw somewhere which had a twist on a traditional shepherd's pie. Yum

BonnieF · 18/05/2018 00:14

They are too sweet for me, too. I’ll stick to normal spuds, it must be my Irish heritage Smile.

CadyHeron · 18/05/2018 00:17

"Normal" spuds are still my favourite too. I do love sweet potatoes too though. Smile

Johnnycomelately1 · 18/05/2018 00:30

I don't like them- when they say "Do you want to pay $10 to upgrade to sweet potato fries?" I'm like "I'll pay you $10 to ensure no sweet potato touches my plate"

It's weird because I have a majorly sweet tooth but at the same time I don't like any "sweet" veg, like corn, cooked carrots, squashes, yams etc.

NotTheQueen · 18/05/2018 00:37

Asparagus is fine, it's been around a while.
I think avocados were invented circa 2004, I'd put sweet potatos at 2008.

Grin staple of New Zealand Sunday roasts for over 30 years, and there’s usually three or four different types of kumara (aka sweet potato) in the local supermarkets any given day of the week They also include roast pumpkin too

I love sweet potato - white potatoes and bread react badly for me (although my taste buds love them) so DH eats white potato, I eat sweet potato

i recommend kumara and sweet corn fritters Smile

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2018 00:51

They're horrible.

Fflamingo · 18/05/2018 00:54

Not many people make chips from potatoes, instead they eat the frozen cardboard ones. Chipped new potatoes deep fried in rapeseed oil are delicious. Sweet potatoes are a bit soggy and sweet to me.

Beeziekn33ze · 18/05/2018 01:22

A con?? Of course not! Yummy and so versatile!
I wouldn't add marshmallows myself however, weird American idea!

Monty27 · 18/05/2018 01:32

anon ultimately they are potatoes. My 25yo DD is obsessed with them.
Give me Maris Piper anyday.
I do the shopping. It's just occurred to me I have a never compared prices.
I take the p out of DD remorselessly with her food fads. I call her the quinoa kid.
I was eating avacado way years before she was even a thought and stopped because she wasn't interested when she was young.
My mantra in the kitchen is don't tell me how to suck eggs.
Whatever that means. Grin

Semster · 18/05/2018 01:51

They're definitely not ginger parsnips - I throw up when I eat parsnips and I don't throw up when I eat sweet potatoes.

Here endeth the experiment.

AngelsOnHigh · 18/05/2018 01:58

They're delicious. My DGC love their orange mash. A mixture of plain and sweet potatoes.

Mmmmmmmchips · 18/05/2018 02:02

Actually you’re wrong
They are nutritionally better than regular spuds... you might want to do a little bit of research.....

Rainbunny · 18/05/2018 02:28

I'm extremely underwhelmed by them too, I don't like the sweetness. I think the problem comes from setting them up as an alternative to potatoes, they will never taste anywhere near similar to potatoes and so will always disappoint. I will bake them as a side dish once in a blue moon but for the most part I happily ignore them.

I do find it irritating when restaurants add them to a dish and basically bulk out the entire dish with them to save money on ingredients (a certain local restaurant that serves organic, farm to table food at expensive prices have form for doing this so).

thebewilderness · 18/05/2018 02:30

Baked or roasted they are delish but I have no idea why they are called potatoes. Just because the are a delicious tuber doesn't make them a tater.

kindermog · 18/05/2018 02:43

The smuggest of all the vegetables.

user546425732 · 18/05/2018 02:48

Mashed with chilli = manna from heaven

bluerunningshoes · 18/05/2018 07:22

eurgh i just remembered the mashed sweet potatos topped with marshmallows that were served at thanksgiving in the us Envy

OP posts:
bluerunningshoes · 18/05/2018 07:31

yep
I think as alternative to potatos they are mis sold.

great that so many people like them Smile

OP posts:
Lethaldrizzle · 18/05/2018 07:32

Aren't they lower gi?

Oblomov18 · 18/05/2018 07:37

Marginally lower GI.
But not much. My diabetes doesn't like them! Grin

blaaake · 18/05/2018 07:39

Agreed they're vile
