Orange sweet potatoes - the only type I've seen in the UK - have lots of vitamin A.

TERFragetteCity · 17/05/2018 22:30

They are actually just roots of fancy bindweed. Not a potato at all.

JustGettingStarted · 17/05/2018 22:30

Sweet potatoes and parsnips are both yummy.

The hell is wrong with you people?!

They're yummy. That's a good enough reason to eat them!

IWantMyHatBack · 17/05/2018 22:35

They are better that normal spuds. A jacket potato has some vitamin C, but a sweet potato has a shit load of vitamin A (well, it is orange...), more fibre, and it's lower GI

Nothing wrong with a decent jacket spud though...

I reiterate. Parsnips are evil, and carrots can fuck off.

Armi · 17/05/2018 22:37

Mash then, with a little grating of nutmeg and a sprinkle of chopped sage.

Lush.

Op...get some frozen sweet potato chips from marks and spencer. Seriously make you rethink sweet potato. They also make tasty jackets. Yum yum. Yabu

Hahaha I don't think anyone is trying to con you. Just don't buy them if you don't like them. I love them myself though.

bluerunningshoes · 17/05/2018 22:51

They are actually just roots of fancy bindweed

that explains it all. the growers want rid of an invasive weed and charge people for the disposal.

Sweet potato and spinach curry, very nice!

CornishMaid1 · 17/05/2018 22:57

Nutritionally they are great. They are currently genetically modifying our orange sweet potatoes to be able to grow in the conditions in Africa as they are so nutritious they are going it will help reduce nutritional deficiencies and famine.

madein1995 · 17/05/2018 22:57

They are lush when baked in the oven as chips with salt, The sweet and salty really mix. They're buggers to chop though!

dontticklethetoad · 17/05/2018 23:00

Parsnips are the devil's own spawn.
Sweet potato fries are delicious.

TemptressofWaikiki · 17/05/2018 23:04

Personally, while sweet potatoes are better than normal potatoes, I think for those watching carb spikes and diabetics, topinambour are a much better alternative.

singadream · 17/05/2018 23:05

the waitress sweet potato chips are yum

singadream · 17/05/2018 23:06

frozen ones I mean

Raven88 · 17/05/2018 23:13

I prefer sweet potato to ordinary ones because they are lighter.

niska · 17/05/2018 23:14

@Imfinehowareyou - recipe please - spiralise then roast? Beat in the egg or what?

I'm on the fence. I know they're good for you, but are a bit too sweet and odd-tasting. All recipes for my conversion are welcome.

niska · 17/05/2018 23:16

What? Topinambour - what fresh hell is this? And are Waitrose sweet potato chips better than M&S or what?

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 17/05/2018 23:16

YES
Finally!
Total con.

Soundsgood · 17/05/2018 23:19

Roast them in what though?

Oil?

ArcheryAnnie · 17/05/2018 23:22

When I do sweet potatoes, they aren't nutritionally superior to regular potatoes, because the vast tonnage of butter I add to sweet potatoes puts paid to that. Yum.

(And black pepper. Must have black pepper.)
