AIBU?

Does Fortnite turn your kid into an arsehole too?

Just banned DS12 off it for life and put the Xbox in the bottom of my wardrobe. He is generally a lovely kid but holy fuck does this game turn him into a monster. And no matter how many times I shout (yes I know) STOP SHOUTING he still continues to bellow at his mates about twatting Spooky Towers or whatever the fuck it is called.

Fucking hell fire.

Can't wait for this trend to die a death. I don't have kids, so it's not infiltrated my home, but fed up with hearing about it several times per hour at school all day.

SkaTastic · 17/05/2018 21:45

SachaStark I work in school too so totally get it!! Miss miss do you want to hear about what I did on Fortnite last night? Err no ta mate.

DS (year 4) isn't allowed to play it. He hates that we won't let him because all his friends play it but he gets up a height playing Minecraft so no way is he getting Fortnite.

KellyBailey · 17/05/2018 21:48

Yes, I've become very practised in the art of nodding and mmm-hmming while not understanding a word.

Candlelight123 · 17/05/2018 21:49

Yup, not as much as FIFA tbh, but he regularly made to turn it off and has been banned for a couple of days on occasions. It's massive at the moment though.

KappaKappa · 17/05/2018 21:49

My normally lovely 12 yo seems to have a personality transplant when he plays it. I haven't fully banned it but it's restricted to 2 days a week. He shouts to his friends while he's playing and then gets uncharacteristically stroppy when it's time to come off. I hate the bloody game!

KellyBailey · 17/05/2018 21:49

Oh and the stupid dance is getting very old now too. Still, it's marginally better than bottle flipping.

Distractotron · 17/05/2018 21:50

Gaming and devices turn my kids into hyperactive horrors. It's the high mental stimulation vs the lack of physical activity. It makes them get moody and/or fighty. They are banned from too much screen time because of it. Fortn ite isn't the worst game for it IMO but only because DP plays on it with them and that seems to calm them down bizarrely!

KappaKappa · 17/05/2018 21:50

My 9 yo isn't allowed to play it and won't be until he's 12 (when hopefully the trend will be over! )

Domino20 · 17/05/2018 21:51

YA all BU it's an awesome game. OP get that console out of the wardrobe and get gaming 😁

SmileEachDay · 17/05/2018 21:52

Several of my KS4 students have tried to convince me that they HAD to do their Speaking&Listening assessment about frigging Fortnight.

No. I do not want to have to ask you questions about it. Just no.

I don’t care how “passionate” you feel about it. I really, really don’t.

NotCitrus · 17/05/2018 21:54

I was worried my ds would want to play it as some of his friends do, but apparently it's so rubbish he and a few friends have started a campaign group called FIR (Fortnite Is Rubbish). He still talks to the ones who play it though!

Minecraft and FrivGames will do for now. Apparently Roblox isn't good if you aren't allowed to befriend strangers or spend real money (oh well, tough, not changing that matey!)

missyB1 · 17/05/2018 21:55

My ds is 9 and not allowed to play it, I’m amazed most of his mates play it, I’ve heard both but bad things about it.

missyB1 · 17/05/2018 21:55

nothing but bad things

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 21:55

I'm not usually a swearer, but do NOT get me started on bastarding twatting Fortnite! Grin
HATE it. Both of mine obsessed with it. Eldest not so bad on it, comes off nicely when asked (although really winds me up that you can never just "come off" when it's time for tea, say, as they need to finish the game. Which is basically until whenever you die Angry
Youngest on it currently banned on Fortnite and the Xbox for the foreseeable as he's awful on it. Stinking attitude.

Chattymummyhere · 17/05/2018 21:58

We have sent the oldest to bed just over an hour ago so we can play fortnite Grin although Ali A has got that bloody rap stuck in my head.

ICantCopeAnymore · 17/05/2018 22:00

Nope, my DS10 is able to play it for his allocated time slot, come off it with no hassle and never gets aggressive or stroppy about it.

But then he's used to gaming and our limits on his Xbox time.

PollyMycroft · 17/05/2018 22:00

No. Not at all. They have limited game time though. I've tried to play it-I can't. I can do the easier dances though Grin.

8PinkSnails · 17/05/2018 22:02

It's all I hear about at school from the kids at the moment, and even the parents at parents evening!

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 22:02

ICantCope - we have time limits on Xbox too, both fine with coming off.
Fortnite seems to be unique though on the bloody attitude whilst on it and after coming off it sucks though!

FoofFighter · 17/05/2018 22:04

Yabu to blame the game.

It's parents who allow children to play for hours on end fault really. Any game played for that amount of time may lead to personality changes in some people who are more susceptible.

Strict time limits and plenty of time doing other more active stuff and it will rarely then become a problem.

TheMonkeysAreMine · 17/05/2018 22:04

It's limited in this house but even my dh loves it! Not that he plays much

I think consoles makes kids rage in general tbh

CadyHeron · 17/05/2018 22:08

See, that's where the argument falls down. We don't allow them to "spend hours" on them.
Come in from school, uniform off, snack, homework then tea. 2 hours maximum each. Attitude still stinks on it though!

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 17/05/2018 22:10

When my DS isn’t playing it, he’s watching YouTube videos of people playing it!

colditz · 17/05/2018 22:17

No. I have long had the rule that when the game isn't fun any more, the game is pointless and pointless games get binned. And if you're shouting at the game, or it's causing you to be rude, it's clearly not fun.

We went through this with Minecraft, with Skyrim, with Dungeon Defenders, with every game we have ever had and I have only had to bin a game once (it was SUper Mario SMash Brothers Brawl)
