Influencer ethics on Instagram 2

It appears we haven't quite finished workshopping the ethical issues of 'influencing' on Instagram: disclose of advertising, the exploitation of minors and the similarities to MLM schemes.

Goodie bags can cure clinical depression, I heard. From a life coach or someone.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 16/05/2018 20:56

If only I had a lavander flannel in said bath

I absolutely agree that it's fine to be an advocate as long as you make utchear that you are entirely unqualified. It is not fine to use your midwifery title and role as a HCP to add legitane y and weight to your entirely unqualified views

Boredandtired · 16/05/2018 20:56

dont give them the traffic* just report them!

TheLadyhasarrived · 16/05/2018 20:59

That is exactly what I was thinking about earlier in the thread, if someone is talking about something with their name and/or photo attached then they are not qualified.
If they were qualified to give advice they wouldn’t be able to due to professionalism.
£84 for a day spent with unqualified people dishing out advice, you couldn’t make it up.

jamoncrumpets · 16/05/2018 20:59

To qualify for the following jobs you need a...
Psychotherapist: post graduate level degree.
Life coach: online course.

Who would you trust with your broken mind?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 16/05/2018 20:59

So - the group outing, yes?

Are we asking some trans-rights advocates along to see their champion, Natasha Bailie, in action?

Reboot · 16/05/2018 21:00

I don't think there is a midwife at the event Gobbo?

TheLadyhasarrived · 16/05/2018 21:02

The only person missing is a nutritionist.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 16/05/2018 21:03

*jamon"badass"crumpets - are you able to confirm if a midwife is attending. I think you said so but I might be confused? and in need of a lavender flannel

Boredandtired · 16/05/2018 21:04

'Mental health warrior Nathasha Bailie' LMAO.

NeverWas · 16/05/2018 21:05

Yes Gobbo. We need sponsored T-shirts.

Someone DMed me and said so. Does anyone have any recommendations.

Oh sh*t, that doesn't work on here...

MadameGrizzly · 16/05/2018 21:07

A new house? Some people would be grateful just to have any house!

@wheezing I went down that path. I cannot reconcile the conspicuous overconsumption with the lack of any sort of contribution to society.

I fully admit I've been using these threads to workshop my feelings around this. I just can't understand how a university educated, comfortably off person would not try to have some sideline 'worthy' work they use their high profile to publicise.

MP's Flex Appeal campaign may not be flawless, but she is out there doing it and giving an important cause exposure. There are sooooo many causes a midwife could support (that don't involve a long haul flight and a spot of poverty tourism).

And there are so many disadvantaged people whose lives could be changed by, say, a nice outfit to wear to a job interview. The influencers are becoming immune to the thrill of new stuff as they are given so much free shit and it is showing - they are appearing increasingly grabby, greedy and ungrateful.

Someone noted on an earlier thread that the ODs are forever doing tip trips due to the amount of packaging crossing their threshold. Can you just imagine being sent so much free stuff you can't fit the packaging in your regular bin? And yet some kids have never had a pair of shoes or clothes bought new. It genuinely hurts my brain.

Influencing as an occupation would be much more palatable with a side of charitable work.

Just looked at the link and the midwife statement is quite correct - it is AlexisshouldkniwbetterStrickland. Actually, I may have just made up the middle but if her name.

I bet MOD is fucked off that Megababes is cheating on her with another midwife Grin

Sponsored tshirt s must also come in kids sizes so that you can “twin” with your littles.
Because twinning is winning....apparently.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 16/05/2018 21:10

flying - I'm sorry. I think I may have actually taken the piss out of this too much.

I can honestly see how this could very genuinely be upsetting or very irritating for you and @jamoncrumpets

jamoncrumpets · 16/05/2018 21:13

You'd never see a counsellor or psychotherapist spouting about 'self care' on SM. In fact you wouldn't see them on SM, because it would contravene BACP guidelines.

MadameGrizzly · 16/05/2018 21:14

I'm sorry, too. I was kind of off topic there, but I'm just catching up with the thread.

The price of the event must go up each time you click on the page? Like flights? That's appalling for a 'mental health' event. Hmm

I like the personal/business accounts that work in collaboration and share a few goodies. So a follower can win a sling/hoody/jewellery whatever. Seems so less grabby and unpleasant. I liked cigarettesandcalpol and it's sad that she's withdrawn her entire account after an email. She engaged well and seemed honest and often shared goodies. Just seemed genuine.
Many of these accounts are really unpleasant now, most annoying is one I really liked who begged and begged to get 10000 followers and now has and it's all just so desperate and ugh.

TheLadyhasarrived · 16/05/2018 21:14

Sorry flying watching people imply that all you need for good mental health is me time and £86 of unqualified advice must be so frustrating.

NeverWas · 16/05/2018 21:18

FlyingBird please don't be upset. Gobbo's right - sorry for laughing at the event. Just trying to make light of the quackery.

None of it is really funny, the kids on IG, the 'bullying' that everyone thinks everyone else is doing. It's the very worst side of SM. but these chats and laughs are the best of it, in my view.

Boredandtired · 16/05/2018 21:19

I can't even go there with the mental health bollocks because it's so despicable and Instagram is already (particularly pre-ad disclosed) so detrimental to many due to supposedly normal mums/dads living completely unobtainable vacuous lives that the wave of mental health admissions and hashtags is disgraceful. It takes away from those genuine accounts and people and makes it less supported overall as everyone and anyone appears to have a mental health problem.

NeverWas · 16/05/2018 21:25

Bored and Tired did you see the one who said her husband would buy her DLAM's trainers if she got 400 new followers. The whole concept of that had my head spinning!

jamoncrumpets · 16/05/2018 21:27

To qualify as a counsellor/psychotherapist you need to prove that you have been in intensive therapy for at least an hour a week, for at least two years. You need to know yourself before you can begin to know anybody else.

There are NO short cuts in mental health.

If you go to your GP with a mood disorder they are not going to hand you a piece of paper with NB's Instagram details on. They are going to refer you to a psychiatrist or IAPT and maybe prescribe you with medication.

Of course if NB wanted to make a real tangible difference to women's lives she could retrain as a MH professional herself... but that would cost her over £10k. She'd have to sell a lot of tea/iron supplements.

jamoncrumpets · 16/05/2018 21:28

(I secretly covet those DLAM trainers. They're exactly my style. I wouldn't pay over £60 for a pair of shoes though.)
