AIBU to want to anonymously report someone who has a cash only job and not pay tax?

I have a friend (not close) who has a cash in hand job and doesn't declare the income. It really irks me because I work hard and hate seeing my payslip and all the tax etc that gets deducted.
They get benefits on top of this also (which if she declared her income she wouldn't be entitled to).
I guess I've always been live and let live so would be very out of character for me to report her but on the other hand - I think it's just so unfair.
My oh thinks she'll get caught eventually and just leave it.
It's stealing though. Thoughts?

I think it’s a cunty thing to do tbh.

Unless you own it, tell her you’re doing it if she doesn’t stop the job.

Doing it out of petty spite won’t give you the feeling you think it will, especially if you watch the fallout.

Meh - reporting them doesn’t mean you’ll start having to pay less tax. Loads of people do this. The benefits thing is a bit dodgy though. But think you should just judge quietly and keep out of it

My friends DH did this for years, delivering takeaways in the evenings for cash, he earnt a lot with tips etc and yes I was really annoyed but wouldn't report.

Oh no don't do that. It won't make you feel good. Tax is a bummer, but snitching isn't going to reduce yours.

Its not jealously - I wouldn't want to live like that, I have always played by the rules.
Spite? If I saw someone break into a car/house - I would report it so what's the difference? It's a crime?

OP, are you sure you know as much about her financial situation as you think you do?
How much does she earn? When did she start working? When is her year end? What are her expenses? What benefits does she receive?

So many questions and I’ll bet my arse you can’t answer a single one of them.
Keep your nose in your own business.

Did she tell you? Despite fact you are “not close” with her.

Cash in hand job. Let’s be honest, likely to be low paid. And certainly no sick pay, no benefits, no employee rights, no maternity pay and, as I say, likely to be little money that would actually hardly impact her benefit situation

Can any of the 70% of posters above who think you shouldn't report explain why? It's stealing. It's someone putting their hand sneakily in to the governments purse and taking money out. Money that pays for schools and hospitals. Why wouldn't you report it?

She earns £80 a day cash in hand. I know for a fact she doesn't declare.
She's done it for 3-4 years now.
And she definitely isn't entitled to her benefits.

Interesting to read other opinions though....

@Romeo so CE when are businesses claiming benefits? But seriously, if you actually know of any multibillion pound business doing this you really should resort them.

To me it would depend what They are earning. Doing a bit of sewing for friends in the evening is different from a full time equivalent job.

How do you know she doesn't declare? How do you know her exact daily income? And you still haven't answered what benefits you think she's getting that she isn't entitled to.

Personally, I wouldn't report someone unless I was 100% certain of all the facts. Anything less than 100% certainty is putting a potentially innocent person through months of hell just because you feel a bit pissed off about having to pay your own tax.
