AIBU to want to anonymously report someone who has a cash only job and not pay tax?

I have a friend (not close) who has a cash in hand job and doesn't declare the income. It really irks me because I work hard and hate seeing my payslip and all the tax etc that gets deducted.
They get benefits on top of this also (which if she declared her income she wouldn't be entitled to).
I guess I've always been live and let live so would be very out of character for me to report her but on the other hand - I think it's just so unfair.
My oh thinks she'll get caught eventually and just leave it.
It's stealing though. Thoughts?

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 12/05/2018 19:37

According to the op, the friend we're discussing isn't on the breadline, isn't at food banks etc. She isn't destitute.
Why are people responding as if, if she wasn't fraudulently keeping this money, she'd be on the streets? It's distorting the thread.

converseandjeans · 12/05/2018 19:38

Yes report - the cash in hand not as bad on its own but claiming benefits on top? £1600 take home is probably £2000 p/m before tax salary - so about £24k p/a salary. Do you all honestly think it is OK to claim on top of this sort of salary? It is theft & it is worrying that so many people comment on here saying the OP must be jealous etc..

CremeBrulee · 12/05/2018 19:39

If you really thought it was the right thing to do you would not need to do it anonymously.

You want to take the moral high ground but do not have the courage of your convictions. Sneaking around reporting your 'friends' behind their backs while being nice to their faces is pretty low behaviour.

agedknees · 12/05/2018 19:39

So this is why we have potholed roads, lack of funding for the nhs, education etc. Because of thieves like her.

Face her and tell her if she doesn’t stop you will report her. It’s the honourable thing to do.

Lethaldrizzle · 12/05/2018 19:39

Wow I've paid loadsa different people in cash over the years

Faultymain5 · 12/05/2018 19:40

@Hoopaloop, do you know why your maths are wrong? cause you don't know what benefits the OP's 'friend' is claiming.

I suspect the OP doesn't know the figures. I also suspect as a worker, not entitled to benefits, she doesn't know how that system works for her 'friend.

LilQueenie · 12/05/2018 19:40

£80 per day but how many days per week? if she is paying off debt then I can see her point. How many people descend into health and mental problems when in so much debt they end up losing their home.

jnfrrss · 12/05/2018 19:40

Just shows how economically dumb so many are, when the answer to every problem with the countries finances could just be solved by taxing Amazon. As if it's that easy.

greendale17 · 12/05/2018 19:41

Do it. It's very much all of our business.

^This. Only on MN is it no ones business.

Hoopaloop · 12/05/2018 19:44

I didn't include benefits.

Melliegrantfirstlady · 12/05/2018 19:45

I don’t support fraud but I just don’t see it as an area where I’m concerned enough to contact the authorities.

I mention Amazon because it is shocking how much money they make from the U.K. consumers and the government don’t mind this.

Therefore I really don’t care about who’s fraudung who

I do not get any financial assistance whatsoever from the govt.

In a side note what I really hate is the men who work cash in hand and don’t pay CM.

LetTheRiverRun · 12/05/2018 19:46

It’s alarming how many people think it’s acceptable. Benefit fraud costs in the billions each year! Yes amazon etc should be held accountable but so should everyone committing benefit fraud and personal tax evasion. One person may not have an impact on your tax but if everyone took the approach of reporting rather than “minding their own business” there could be an extra billion or two going to the nhs or education or services such as police and fire brigade or to those who desperately need it! It’s disgusting that people slate the benefit system for not paying enough but turn a blind eye to abuse of it

Fflamingo · 12/05/2018 19:49

I mention Amazon because it is shocking how much money they make from the U.K. consumers and the government don’t mind this
On the other hand I would say how shocking it is that UK consumers are happy to spend all their money on Amazon who pay little tax to the U.K. soon all our local shops will be gone.

infertilitybitch · 12/05/2018 19:49

I wouldn't report no. You can work while claiming benefits. Depending on the benefit.

She may not be earning enough to even pay tax

Melliegrantfirstlady · 12/05/2018 19:49

JNFRS

I don’t think anyone on here has said the UKs problems would be solved if Amazon paid U.K. taxes!

Please quote?

Melliegrantfirstlady · 12/05/2018 19:50

I agree with you flamingo. That’s what’s so infuriating about Amazon.

I can get bothered about Amazon but not a woman earning £80

Mum2jenny · 12/05/2018 19:50

I wouldn't if she's a friend, actually I would only report people I thought were really taking the piss, but £80 a day allowing for expenses isn't that much.

Brazenhussy0 · 12/05/2018 19:50

@KikiLondon1 - So are you planning on coming back to tell us what benefits your friend is receiving but isn't entitled to?
Still waiting for an answer on that...

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/05/2018 19:54

I would do it. If everyone were honest and declared their income - both big and small, there would be more money for essential services and less people using food banks.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 12/05/2018 19:55

I’d just report online tbh.

BewareOfDragons · 12/05/2018 20:00

So let's say she's earning an extra £80 a day as you say, which translates to, £400 over a 5 day week, £1600 over a month, potentially £12-19000 extra a year (depending on weeks taken off to look after chldren) ... all undeclared and untaxed on top of government benefits which everyone pays for.

And people think is is ok? Really?

It's fraud.

Faultymain5 · 12/05/2018 20:02

Hoopaloop I know you didn't include benefits. That's why the maths are off. We, OP included, don't know what the threshold is for this 'friend'. For all we know it's just her housing benefit (or whatever they call it). And I may have missed it, but is she working everyday CIH?

JudgeJudy79 · 12/05/2018 20:03

@lettheriverrun

Absolutely spot on.

Faultymain5 · 12/05/2018 20:06

Melliegrantfirstlady, that's because no-one did!

BoxsetsAndPopcorn · 12/05/2018 20:06

I'd have no hesitation in reporting, it's theft and that's everybodies business.
