Transgender stuff - only on Mumsnet - am I weird?!

obliviousperson · 09/05/2018 22:34

The only time I ever read or heard about transgender stuff is on Mumsnet.

I live in London, I travel a lot. As far as I know I know no one who has changed gender. I have never had a transgender issue that has affected me. Not in changing rooms or swimming pools or anywhere.

It is a bigger deal on this website than in my real life. No one I know has had any issues.

Is it hype? I don't understand!!!!

That such a small population can get the government close to muddying the definition of woman to mean something other than being of the sex that bear young.

Men are always listened to first and their opinion treated as if it is fact. That’s why they are getting to define what a woman is, over the rights of actual women.

MadameGrizzly · 09/05/2018 22:50

Our staff toilets have been changed back from gender neutral to gendered. Gender neutral didn't work as men apparently don't need to secure toilet doors. Hmm

I have a transgender friend who changed genders circa 1986. It a Big Deal then. Recently two teens I know started transitioning but changed their minds after about a year, and this does concern me if only for the utter angst it caused their parents.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 22:52

Neither has partner and he works in media! Nothing!

Really?

What sort of media? He must be totally blind (or wilfully ignorant as it doesn’t affect him)

obliviousperson · 09/05/2018 22:52

I don't have a sheltered life! I'm out and about, I don't watch a lot of TV but I read a lot and my job deals with current affairs and the people I work with ate as oblivious as I am!

I know a massive gay community. But transgender, nope.

The only place a ridiculous out of proportion fuss is made, is MN though.

Wimbledonwomble · 09/05/2018 22:56

Have come across a few transgender people in my time. However, I too have not really heard it discussed as a problem anywhere else except on MN and by one individual on my FB who is bloody obsessed by it. However, I know she is a mumsnetter as are most (If not all) of the people who join in her rants (I can tell by their posting style!). I too believe it's made out to be a much bigger deal on here than it actually is. I've never encountered any problems with men identifying as women trying to invade my space and until that day comes - meh!

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 22:56

Never read anything about Caitlin Jenner, Lily Madigan as Labour Women’s Officer, Labour all-women shortlists open to trans women, Jenni Murray of Woman’s Hour criticised, Germain Greer and others no-platformed, trans women in sport...

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 09/05/2018 22:57

Articles have been in most papers at one point or another

Some Children at senior school seem to be 'transitioning' mainly female

A freinds child is transitioning

A few transwomen wheni pootle around the shops

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 22:58

They’re not trying to invade your space. They’re trying to change the definition of woman/man in legal terms.

When that day comes, it will be too late to object.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 09/05/2018 22:58

Oh im sorry i missed the comment about reading lots

Not papers like the Guardain or times or daily mail though?

obliviousperson · 09/05/2018 22:59

NoSquirrels Mainstream tv. Programmes you definitely would have heard of and may be watching on catch up at this v minute.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 23:01

I just cannot believe that a bloke in media who works on mainstream TV of a catch-up-worthy nature has never had any training on inclusivity that encompasses gender...

obliviousperson · 09/05/2018 23:03

Yes I've read about Caitlin Jenner, Lily whatshername, nope. Germaone Greer I have no time for as I met her in person once (thanks to DH's job) and she was creaming over a male celeb who was there and I marked her as a hypocrite from that moment on lol!

Because it’s creeping in to society, and women are being out on the back burner as less important, and some of the women here discuss and identify it (not me- not knowledgeable enough). That you have to used preferred pronouns- but I have to accept ‘cis’ or natal- both terms I find utterly offensive but not allowed to. Hat the NYS is producing information to refer to pregnant women as pregnant person, to offend one ‘man’ who stopped hormone treatement and have both and we don’t want to offend them over thousands of women. That you juts have to say I’m a woman, and you are- no need to actually want to ‘be’ one. The attacks of those who are transpositive of anyone who asks anything, and shouts of “bully, terf, transphobic” screamed at anyone who has any questions. There are many reasons it needs to be discussed, and MN s ems to be one of the few places still trying to. And women are suffering abuse online constantly because of it.

obliviousperson · 09/05/2018 23:05

No squirrels Believe it! It is not an issue in the field DH works. Really.

Bloody Nora. If you can work out the autocorrect fails.

NameChangedAgain18 · 09/05/2018 23:08

My university has just announced that we’re to use gender neutral language now. No he or she (god knows how that is going to work). Elsewhere, Vice-Chancellors such as that at Sussex are congratulating themselves for removing “transphobic” content from course syllabi, by which I can only assume they mean such clamping down on such violent bigotry as biology and second-wave feminism.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 23:09

@obliviousperson I’m wondering if you and DP are young and child-free at the moment? I definitely didn’t think about any of this stuff when I was in my 20s, for instance. But I’d definitely met trans people - I do find it odd you’ve come across NO trans or gender queer people in London if you know a massive gay community and your DP works in media.

GherkinSnatch · 09/05/2018 23:09

DH works for a major broadcasting company that is very keen to be seen as a liberal workplace and they recently updated their HR portal so he had the option to answer a “identifier gender” tick box. He joked about identifying as a woman so he’d get access to the “women in leadership” coaching materials and promotion schemes...

BesmirchingMotherhood · 09/05/2018 23:10

In the council elections last week I could vote for three men or a man who identifies as a woman.

Labour, LibDems, Greens, SNP would tell you that meant 25% of candidates here were women.

That’s not true.

NoSquirrels · 09/05/2018 23:10

Your DP must work on DIY SOS or Match Of The Day Grin

SimonBridges · 09/05/2018 23:10

Just fired up the channel 4 catch up app. I swear I touched and searched for nothing.
The front page.

Carry on thinking it’s only on MN if you like.

PositivelyPERF · 09/05/2018 23:11

Oh I see what you’re doing now OP. You were doing so well at the beginning, but I don’t think I’ll bother wasting my time posting again. I’m away to talk to some ACTUAL women. 😒

passmetheloppers · 09/05/2018 23:11

This thread reminds me why I hid the feminism topics.

Storm4star · 09/05/2018 23:12

I actually had a fair bit of experience of it, as a few years ago my DD dated a FTM (that person was actually in a documentary), and we went along to support groups and suchlike. It was an eye opener. There were children there as young as 12. They organised special events, like they had use of a swimming pool at certain times for just them so the members could use the changing room they felt comfortable with. It was actually a great support group and I learnt a lot. Though I did struggle with calling a single individual “them/they” etc.
