Never missed a bedtime, am I weird

DC is 2 and I have only missed 1 bath time and bedtime and that was because I was ill. Dh has missed many a bath and bedtime as 1. He works a variety of shifts, and 2. He goes out a lot, especially at weekends.

We were arguing about something else when he stated I was weird and crazy for not wanting to miss a bathtime and that I needed to get a life.

For background, both work full time and DC goes to nursery full time. I work nornal office hours with some travelling involved and he does a mix of days and nights

I think its totally normal - you are working hard during the day and your child is in nursery, so its natural that you want to spend time with them as a family in the evening. I think it would be weirder if a child went all day without spending time with either of their parents. I'm sure you sometimes go out when your child is in bed

YABU to take a child with possible chicken pox to the drs!

Nicknacky · 10/05/2018 12:57

harsh My kids go five days in a row only seeing me for an hour or so depending on my shifts. It's just life and not weird at all.

Shutupanddance1 · 10/05/2018 13:06

Not weird but a bit confused why you felt you needed to tell the world?

FWIW - my DH does nearly every bedtime with my DD who is 2 while I sit and eat biscuits, drink tea and watch crap tv for 20 mins. He has done since she was 9 months and I stopped BF her to sleep.

Does this make me a shite parent? Nope, she just likes her dad doing it Smile.
Oh and we occasionally get a babysitter and go out together - I would consider it not normal to never go out with my DH in nearly 3 years. You have to work at a relationship to keep it strong and healthy.

blackeyes72 · 10/05/2018 13:18

No but what is weird is that you are counting?

I have four children and absolutely no idea how many bath or bed times I have missed. Like you, I work full time and travel so had many overnight stays in the years. Also been out in the years with work, friends, etc...

I could tell you that I am there in the main but never felt the urge to count. It's the counting that I find strange but maybe it's because I have too many children!!

harshbuttrue1980 · 10/05/2018 13:51

Nicknacky, sorry, in my view that is unusual. That's not to say it is harmful to the children, as there might be a stay at home dad or grandparent as the primary bond. But I still don't think its the norm to only see your children for an hour every five days. I'm all for childcare (I don't have kids, but I hope to in the future and I'd want to be a working mum), but I don't think its healthy if parents don't want to be involved in their children's lives at all. I'm against boarding schools for the same reason.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 10/05/2018 14:01

Not weird for me. I never missed a bath or bedtime until my eldest was about 9 and that was when he stayed with a friend for a 'sleepover'. . Nothing wrong with that at all. Unique family circumstances etc. Judge away Grin

Nicknacky · 10/05/2018 14:08

harsh it might not be the norm but it certainly not weird. Many shift workers will go a few days with only seeing their kids for a few days and when I’m at work at night they are at home with their dad.

Completely different issue if parents aren’t involved in their kids life.

Nicknacky · 10/05/2018 14:09

Few hours, not few days. I’m still tired from my late shift. I will see my eldest for just an hour today and my youngest for two.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/05/2018 14:59

Nicky do you mean an hour every day for five days or for 1 hour over a period of five hours? It doesn't matter as such just I read it differently to harsh. Plenty of Dads on here work away all week - wouldn't be our families choice but ultimately we all need to pay the bills

Nicknacky · 10/05/2018 14:59

An hour or so a day.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/05/2018 15:01

That's what I thought you meant, not how harsh rewrote it.
Id think that's fairly normal for many families with young kids by the time they get out if wrap around care / parent is back from long shift.

Nicknacky · 10/05/2018 15:37

Think they generally get more than an hour a day, to be honest. I don’t see my kids at all in the morning and will see them for an hour before I get ready for work but my eldest is usually doing homework then.

But it’s part of my job and we are all used to it and it’s swimgs and roundabouts as it means I have the day with them during holidays, weekends and I get four days off after my run of late shifts.
