To think you can be an animal lover and eat meat?

I know I'm going to be flamed, have donned protective gear...

But I think that it's hypocritical to eat meat and claim to be an animal lover. That isn't to say meat eaters don't deeply love their pets - I fully accept that they do! But I think that in those cases they only love certain animals, not animals generally.

We know that pigs are far more intelligent than dogs. We know that cows form close social bonds with specific individuals within the herd. We know enough to confidently state that there is no reason to separate pets from any other species except that we are conventionally accustomed to doing so.

I think everyone is free to make their own choices and whether or not I approve of them is totally irrelevant. But I don't think there is any logical grounds for a meat eater to claim that they are an animal lover when they're happy for some kinds of animals to suffer and be killed.

I am a animal lover, I also eat meat. All our meat is sourced locally by us and killed humanely. We only eat what we hunt, which is deer, fish, duck and turkey. We do however trade for some bear or moose meat if available.

2 deer, 3 turkeys, 8 ducks pretty much covers our meet needs for a family of 4 for the year. Fish is used as dog food predominantly.

You definitely learn a deeper respect for your food when you hunt it, we consequently eat less meat.

YellowStages · 08/05/2018 17:57

I don't think you can love all animals if you're okay with eating them. And all this 'I only buy meat that's been raised well and had a good life' is ridiculous.

So it's okay to murder an animal for food because you have given it a good life that was cut away short to feed you

People need to admit to only really loving certain animals, such as dogs etc.

And no, I don't think you're 100% compassionate if you buy clothes you know have come from Child slavery or whatever else. You can't be. I'm not saying you don't care at all but some part of you doesn't care enough to shop or source elsewhere/try and do something about it.

I say this as someone who does eat meat and buy clothes from all types of places. I will admit to not being all that bothered enough to do anything about either, or change my habits.

duckling that's why humans evolved to create tools to use in order to hunt, catch, prepare and eat animals, as they continued to eat nutrient-dense organ meats and flesh, their brains enlarged, developed and lead to the marvellous creativity that we see around us today.

Apes have to forage/eat for a large part of the day in order to ingest enough food to supply their needs, their digestive system is uniquely adapted to doing this, ours isn't. We humans would have to spend at least nine hours a day eating to get enough energy from unprocessed raw food alone to support our large brains, we wouldn't have time for anything else. Personally, I have better things to do that eat for nine hours a day...

So what that we drink milk from other animals? Milk (from cows, goats or sheep) is nutritious and tasty, as is cream and cheese.

JessieMcJessie · 08/05/2018 18:01

Well said namechangedname.

OP, why are you happy treating your horses as playthings? They weren’t born to love being ridden or having a bit in their mouths. Is not subjecting them to your dominance less humane than quickly slitting the throat of a young lamb?

Ladymadness · 08/05/2018 18:01

I love animals and i love eating meat.
🎵Its the ciiiirrcclleee ooooof liiiiife 🎵
Sorry ill leave now Blush

DrMumMum · 08/05/2018 18:04

Mint, animals bred for meat eat far more plants than humans. Remove these animals and number of plants eaten will go down, even with an increase in human uptake. Your facts actually support being a veggie far more than they oppose it.

HyenaHappy · 08/05/2018 18:04

YANBU.

There’s a difference between eating an animal that actually, genuinely free range and had a decent life and has been slaughtered as humanely as possible and the horrors or the mass meat industry.

No one who has an inkling of what goes on in the meat industry that buys into it can honestly say they love animals.

Watch Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. If you can watch that and still think that a steak is worth it then no. You don’t like animals.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 18:06

So what that we drink milk from other animals?

Mutations that have allowed some groups of humans to digest milk as adults have arisen at different times independently. And spread because they gave a competitive advantage.

Like I said, I don't argue with evolution. Even though we don't need to feed on milk to survive these days, we are able to, so why not?

HyenaHappy · 08/05/2018 18:07

Just because plants don't 'move' doesn't mean they don't feel pain. That is the great hypocrisy of vegans and vegetarians.

Hmm

Yes. Avoiding eating sentient creatures is the same as mowing the lawn.

Righto.

Lweji · 08/05/2018 18:09

Mint, animals bred for meat eat far more plants than humans.

Yes, but we only eat some plants. Cows process grass that is useless to us.

Namechanger20188787 · 08/05/2018 18:11

It's outing so I won't say the specifics of where and for who but I'm a marine biologist and my job is based in conservation.

I eat meat .

Iv had this argument in my own head and so I do get the op but I manage to seperate the two . Another only eating sustainably sourced food and I have meat free days aswell.

Logically I can ok it, emotionally not so much !!

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:13

PleaseDontGoadTheToad Nice try but I am not the one self-righteously pontificating about animal pain vs plant pain. I am simply saying that both plants and animals feel pain.

HyenaHappy · 08/05/2018 18:13

I get Shock when I consider how much water is needed to produce meat. www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/jan/10/how-much-water-food-production-waste

There’s no doubt that cutting down on meat is good for the environment.

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:15

HyenaHappy Both plants and animals feel pain. What is it that you don't (or rather stubbornly refuse to) understand about that? Hmm

HyenaHappy · 08/05/2018 18:17

I am simply saying that both plants and animals feel pain.

But that’s not fact though is it? They have no nervous system required to feel pain. It’s widely disputed that they can feel pain.

Also, say they do. What then? We starve? Eat air?

Seriously, watch Earthlings. If you can compare eating a courgette to a cow then you need to clue yourself up.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 08/05/2018 18:19

I am simply saying that both plants and animals feel pain.

Okay dear. You just keep telling yourself that.

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:19

HyenaHappy, read the links I posted above. It is fact plants feel pain. That is why I posted those links. We now know that plants DO feel pain.

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:20

PleaseDontGoadTheToad What is it that you do not understand about the factual evidence in the links above? You cannot will the facts and evidence away just because it is inconvenient to you.

Lichtie · 08/05/2018 18:21

I love animals and I eat meat.

I don't dislike animals that eat other animals so why would i judge humans for it. Just like I don't dislike vegetables, so I eat those too.

HyenaHappy · 08/05/2018 18:23

Mint your links all quote the same scientist that’s stating that plants feel pain. The BBC one also quotes another scientist.

Two scientists do not a ‘we know this’ make.

I’m assuming you don’t eat plants so what do you eat? Genuinely interested.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 08/05/2018 18:23

You cannot will the facts and evidence away just because it is inconvenient to you.

How exactly would plants feeling pain be inconvenient to me?

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:27

HyenaHappy How many scientists do you need? And yes, I eat plants. Unlike others, I haven't railed against one or the other. I am not the one claiming animals are superior to plants and minimising plant pain just because plants have the misfortune of being rooted to one spot and animals can move about and make noises. Just saying what vegans and vegetarians refuse to hear because it destroys the entire premise of their agenda. That both plants and animals feel pain.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 08/05/2018 18:28

That both plants and animals feel pain.

If you say it enough times it might just come true.

IronMansIronButt · 08/05/2018 18:28

HyenaHappy How many scientists do you need?

More than one, anyway. You need a scientific consensus, otherwise you're just one dude with an idea. If its not reliable and valid, its not science!

MintChocChip04 · 08/05/2018 18:29

How exactly would plants feeling pain be inconvenient to me?
You tell me, since yourself and others are trying to minimise plant pain just because they can't move around.
