Just curious what most people have - and what people are ok with.

And before I get any strident judgements about it never being ok to have points, can people please refrain themselves.

None, I've been driving for 35 years and never had any points at all.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/05/2018 17:54

I’ve been driving for around 25 years and never had any points of any description. DH has been driving for 33 years and he’s never had any points either. We both LOVE driving in France where the speed limit is higher though.

YorkieDorkie · 08/05/2018 17:56

Zero

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 18:02

I'd rather be smug and sanctimonious than have killing a child on my conscience.

You do realise the extra impact even 5mph can have if you hit a child? But that's OK because you're "making up time", or don't see an extra 5mph as speeding.

Shocking.

Kursk · 08/05/2018 18:08

In the UK, with its strict driving laws:
Me 3 points. DH did a speed awareness course.

In the USA:
Me, Pulled over twice for speeding 55 in a 35 and 45 in a 35. Got warnings no points.

Kursk · 08/05/2018 18:09

Oh and DH got a verbal warning for a open beer in the cup holder and another for running a stop sign!

FrangipaniBlue · 08/05/2018 18:14

Yes because there are frequently children wandering the dual carriageways and motorways of the UK.......Hmm

StillMedusa · 08/05/2018 18:18

None, but I got 3 about 10 years ago on the Severn Bridge as I hadn't spotted that it stays at 50 for a while after the toll.
DH none..he drives for a living and is very careful to stick to the rules.

I don't pretend to be a perfect driver. I absolutely stick to the rules round towns, but freely admit doing 75 to 80 on the motorways as long as it's good weather and reasonably low on traffic.

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 18:34

Frangipan - you don't just get speeding tickets on dual carriageways and motorways Hmm

ems137 · 08/05/2018 18:47

I've currently got 8 points on mine, not for speeding though.

Until last August I had 14 points on my license for around a year. 6 of those were for speeding.

DH has got 9, only 3 for speeding.
Dad has got 3 now but there's been times where he's been close to 12.
BIL has 6
A friend has 3

These are just the ones I know from random conversations. I bet many other people in my life have some too.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/05/2018 18:48
  1. Husband 0 too.
hungryhippo90 · 08/05/2018 19:18

Ems137- how do you have 14 points on your licence? I thought you’d lose it at 12?

Springersrock · 08/05/2018 19:23

I had 3 but they’ve expired now. For doing 56 in a 50 on the M11 at 2:30am when there were roadworks.

My elderly great aunt had been hospitalised that evening and I was on my way home from sorting it all out.

Bluelonerose · 08/05/2018 19:24

In 15 years of driving I've done one speed awareness course and had 3 points which expired years ago. So 0

Fairylea · 08/05/2018 19:25

None. Been driving 8 years.

But... I live in a fairly rural area. I do drive very carefully and make every attempt to keep within the speed limits but if I did go a few mph over the chance of a working speed camera to catch me is fairly low compared to somewhere else to be honest. I actually wish we had more working speed cameras in our area, people drive like lunatics.

adaline · 08/05/2018 19:30

I do think a lot of it depends on the area. My commute to work has no speed or traffic cameras at all, so anyone speeding is only going to get caught if a police car/van is driving past and catches them.

That route also goes 30 - 60 - 30 - 40 - 60 in the space of about five minutes, and I would say 95% of people ignore the 30 and 40 zones in the middle. There are boards that warn you to slow down if you're going above 30mph but there's no cameras or anything to catch you out.

However if you drive from my place of work in the opposite direction, there are several sets of speed cameras, and often a mobile speed camera in operation as well. So I think lots of it is massively area dependant (and down to luck - I don't believe there's any drivers out there who's never gone a single mph above the limit!)

Fatted · 08/05/2018 19:34

Been driving for 15 years and never had points. I've never been caught speeding. Wink

BIL got banned for drink driving the day he passed his test!

SellFridges · 08/05/2018 19:37

If I got some I would probably have to take them with good grace though as I admit I speed pretty often. I tend to drive to the road condition and forget there are a number of 20mph zones that have been introduced recently.

Been driving about 17 years I think.

EdWinchester · 08/05/2018 19:41

None.

But 10 years ago I got 6 in the space of a month, having had never had any since passing my test aged 17.

I'm a complete pootler so was genuinely shocked.

AnneElliott · 08/05/2018 20:39

None. Never had any in 20 years of driving. Drive about 10,000 miles per year.

Basecamp65 · 02/09/2018 11:27

None but only because I have done the speed awareness course 4 times.

When you do them you realise it is people who drive a lot for a living and espicially those who drive a lot in unfamiliar areas like myself who get caught speeding the most. People who speed excessively but rarely leave areas they know where speed cameras are frequently do not often get caught.

RedneckStumpy · 02/09/2018 11:33

Only ever been caught speeding once 58 in a 30. The police officer that pulled me over gave me a warning but no fine or points.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 02/09/2018 11:34

None. Never. Been driving for 25 years, and I drive around 80 miles a day on my commute, past around 12 speed cameras, and have done for most of my driving life. Of course, that's not to say I don't drive over the speed limit a lot occasionally. Grin

MissCalamity · 02/09/2018 11:41

I got 3 points about 13 years ago, doing 37 in a 30. Didn't realise how quickly it dropped from a 40 zone & not knowing the area.
None since 😇

Hospitaldramafamily · 02/09/2018 11:42
  1. Two lots for speeding- both cases just slightly over. No speed awareness course where I am
