Just curious what most people have - and what people are ok with.

And before I get any strident judgements about it never being ok to have points, can people please refrain themselves.

OP posts:
Viviene · 08/05/2018 14:37

0 but I had to do the speed awareness course.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 08/05/2018 15:01

It’s amazing that so many MN’ers don’t speed when anyone whose been on a motorways knows it’s only lorries and a Nissan micro containing an 80 year old who are doing 70 or under (temporary speed limits excluded)

FurryDogMother · 08/05/2018 15:03

None, never have had, and I've been driving since 1988. Never had any points on my license.

Monkeybunkey · 08/05/2018 15:07

None. Had 3 for speeding about 10 years ago, now expired.

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 15:11

I drive a BMW and I don't speed on the motorway. Or on any road. Not sure what the make of car hand to do with it.

passmetheloppers · 08/05/2018 15:15

None. Never had any for anything, and been driving since 1981.

Lonelynessie · 08/05/2018 15:17

0, dh also has 0. Have been driving for over 10 years now.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/05/2018 15:20

Sprinkles, well I do. On motorways only. I drive a big, fast Audi though so I'm the devil incarnate...

Unihorn · 08/05/2018 16:04

ICantCopeAnymore
i drive a BMW and I don't speed on the motorway

I can't believe this sorry Grin

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 16:23

Well, if there's someone in the BMW lane, then that's a different story Grin

steppemum · 08/05/2018 16:30

none.
been driving 34 years.

But I do speed, just very aware of where speed cameras are!

dh ALWAYS sticks to speed limit, but missed a sign for 40 on an A road and got points. he was really cross that he had them and I didn't when he is better at sticking to the rules overall.

steppemum · 08/05/2018 16:40

I think it is interesting that people think everyone on a motorway speeds.

When I started driving (in the late 1980s) far more people broke the speed limit on the motorway, and no-one ever took any notice of the 50 limit in the roadworks.

I then lived overseas for a total of 10 years and the thing I noticed most when I came back was how people had changed the way they drive. Far more people stick to the limit.
If you drive with cruise control on at about 70, then you are doing the speed of most people on the road.
Through roadworks it is pretty standard that everyone does 50.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 08/05/2018 16:43

People stick to the limit due to the cameras!

steppemum · 08/05/2018 16:46

sprinkle - yes I know, and I do mostly too for the same reason.

But that is very different from when I started driving, and so I am surprised that so many people still say that everyone on the motorway speeds.

FrangipaniBlue · 08/05/2018 16:56

I agree with some posters that it is sometimes luck and circumstances.

I NEVER speed in built up areas or on rural roads but will admit I do on dual carriageways and motorways when they're quiet/early mornings/late at night. I used to do a lot of driving as part of my job and sometimes at 11pm at night when I'd been away for 3 days I just wanted to get home, or if I could have an extra half hour in bed and leave the house at 5am not 4.30am because I knew I could make time up on a quiet road..... selfish I know but don't think doing this I've been a danger to anyone but myself....

As I said in my original post every time I've been caught was in these circumstances.

By contrast, SIL who passed her test around the same time as me NEVER drives on roads out of town and therefore is rarely exposed to places where there are speed camera vans or unmarked patrol cars. She thinks nothing of driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone and doesn't see anything wrong with it. She is by far a greater danger to others (road users and pedestrians) than I ever was yet she has NEVER been caught speeding.

In that last 2 years I haven't needed to go as much driving, in fact I'm not sure I've even been on the motorway in that time do I can honestly say that I'm the last 2 years I haven't driven over the speed limit.

I think it would be interesting to know whether those saying they never speed (and berating those who do) drive rurally/in towns/in cities/on motorways and how frequently?

FrangipaniBlue · 08/05/2018 17:00

and to those saying "how am I sanctimonious? I was only answering the question...." well no actually some posters weren't.

The OP asked how many points people have for speeding NOT whether people speed or not.

It would have been sufficient to say "I don't have any and I've been driving X years". Adding "because I don't speed" is superfluous to the question and therefore yes, does make you look smug and sanctimonious!

FrangipaniBlue · 08/05/2018 17:01

So many typos, sorry MN Blush

slippynips · 08/05/2018 17:26

I’ve been driving 10 years and no point on my license, but I did once go to a speed awareness course when I was caught speeding to avoid the 3 points

malmi · 08/05/2018 17:38

Adding "because I don't speed" is superfluous to the question and therefore yes, does make you look smug and sanctimonious

So if the question was "How many times have you been caught shoplifting" and someone answered "None, because I don't shoplift", would that be smug and sanctimonious? I don't feel so.

Especially if there were other people saying things like "None so far, guess I just got lucky lol".

I guess it comes down to whether you view speeding as a serious problem or not.

MongerTruffle · 08/05/2018 17:39

I think you have to be going at least 35 for it to register as speeding

That's not true anymore. It used to be 10% + 2 mph, but that isn't the case anymore.

Turnocks34 · 08/05/2018 17:41

None. I was caught speeding on the m60 average speed checks a couple years ago, going 58, instead of 50. Chose to go for a speed awareness course.

SideOrderofSprouts · 08/05/2018 17:42

None and nor does dh

JaniceBattersby · 08/05/2018 17:46

I sit in a lot of magistrates court cases where people are given points for offences including speeding, no licence, no tax, no MOT etc.

I was once in a case about ten years ago now where the man had 22 points on his license and he wasn’t banned. It was bloody outrageous. He had a good solicitor who argued that six of the points were about to expire the following week and if he couldn’t drive, he would lose his business that employed ten local people. Thankfully, I think that magistrates are a bit stricter now.

jamoncrumpets · 08/05/2018 17:51

You've just reminded me that my MOT is overdue - booked for tomorrow now! Though I thought it was just a fine, no points.

blaaake · 08/05/2018 17:51

6 at the moment. All for speeding. I've done the speed awareness course twice tho
