Just curious what most people have - and what people are ok with.

And before I get any strident judgements about it never being ok to have points, can people please refrain themselves.

I wonder how many of the 'I don't break the law' smuggers on this thread will confess to parking on zigzags, bad parking at schools 'just for a moment' or any other transgression?

Well probably not many, as that's breaking the law too. I certainly don't do it, because I'm not a twat.

AddictedToRadley · 08/05/2018 12:48

Yes I totally agree that it was stupid but I was already on the road driving at 70mph and the contractions started. They were then getting stronger pretty quickly so I just wanted to stop the car. It was like period pain cramps to start with and built up very quickly. Yes, I shouldn’t have done it but as there was only a gutter and then drop in to a field there was nowhere to pull over.

I did it and deserved to get the points but in that moment I sped up and was overtaking a vehicle whilst trying to get off that road. I do agree that I’m an idiot but I guess I did what you I did in the moment and in the cold light of day I may have done things differently.

Morphene · 08/05/2018 12:49

following on from addicteds post, I am still wondering if it was legal for DH to drive me to the hospital when he was a learner and I was supposedly supervising...though in labour...

He didn't speed though...he was very conscientious.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/05/2018 12:49

None in 20 years. I usually dont speed but never say never, like most people I have gone over sometimes and have luckily got away with it. I am paranoid about getting them these days though because, thanks to the type of car I have, the insurance is already much higher than average and I cant afford the hike any points would cause, so I am a proper crawler now!

Astrabees · 08/05/2018 12:51

I have bee driving for 44 years. In all that time I've had 3 points for speeding, back in 1995, I was driving downhill in an unfamiliar area and fell foul of a 30mph limit.

Morphene · 08/05/2018 12:51

Neither DH nor I have ever had points. I use to be a bit of a 'ooops I've crept up to 80 on the motorway, I'd better slow down' type driver back in the day, but now I have a car with sat nav and cruise control I don't do that anymore.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/05/2018 12:52

ICantCope, but they still do it. I've seen them - every single day. On balance of probabilities, some will be on Mumsnet/on the thread. I don't expect them to own up though, too busy hoicking.

Well done you, though. Star - we need a shiny badge emoticon perhaps?

Noboozeforme · 08/05/2018 12:53

0 in 25 years of driving. That said I've also been very 'lucky'. Got a letter through about a year ago saying I'd been caught speeding and a reminder to be more speed aware. I also got pulled over by the police doing 40 in a 30 zone years ago at 3am. They let me off.

puppymouse · 08/05/2018 12:55

Currently 6. Gained within a week on same stretch of road when I started having to use it every day for the first time and incorrectly thought it was a 40 limit. They're about to expire and I've been super conscious since but find it really hard to 100% know what the speed limit is all the time. I never exceed it knowingly. There are some very smug posters on this thread.

SlothMama · 08/05/2018 12:55

I've had none and I drive over 30,000 miles a year, it's not that difficult I stick my cruise control when I'm on the motorway. If I know the motorway has active cameras I stick to the speed limit and in road works I keep the cruise control on at 50mph so I can't be tempted to speed.
If only I was at good at avoiding parking and toll fines... (damn mersey gateway!)

liminality · 08/05/2018 12:56

I think the general responses on here show an interesting side to the mumsnet demographic

Dontstepinthecowpat · 08/05/2018 12:56

None in 15 years. But I am a company transport manager and would be in big trouble with DVSA if I were to get any.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/05/2018 12:57

None. I do my best to obey the speed limit - and though I know I am not perfect at it, by any means, I have not ever been done for speeding.

SemperIdem · 08/05/2018 12:58

Zero points. Have attended one speed awareness course.

I’ve been driving nearly 12 years.

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 12:59

How do you know the ones parking like dicks don't speed? Are you in their cars at all times? Usually, the speeding parents are the ones I have to repeatedly ask not to park on the school zigzags, block the gates, park in the staff car park or drive like idiots outside the school etc.

I'd definitely get a shiny badge, I don't break the law. Though I thought that was quite normal for civilised people.

HicDraconis · 08/05/2018 12:59

None. I have had 3 in the past (50 in a 30, I was accelerating up to the. 50 but there was a camera just before the sign).

DH has none, though that’s more luck - he got caught by a camera here but used his UK license, so no points could be given. He’s not had any since.

Honestly acceptable - none. Just like there is no acceptable alcohol intake before driving.

dayinlifeof · 08/05/2018 12:59

None. I've been driving for 21 years and have no points and have never had an accident.

reddington · 08/05/2018 12:59

Currently none, but have been done here and abroad. Been stopped more times than I can count. Passing the attitude test certainly helps.

Cath2907 · 08/05/2018 13:00

None and have never had any although I did a speed awareness course for doing 63 in a 60 zone couple of years back. Hubby also has none now although he did have 3 at one time for doing just over 30 in a 30 zone on the way to our honeymoon. No course was offered at that time. Both been driving 20 years+

Want2bSupermum · 08/05/2018 13:02

slothmama That Mersey gateway is going to be the death of me. I'm home once a month and my best friend moved so I take it to visit her. My goodness. I have paid an extortionate amount in fines. It annoys me greatly to incur fines when I signed up to the program to get the discounts.

Anyway that bridge should not cost extra. People need to get about and enough taxes are paid to cover the cost.

evilharpy · 08/05/2018 13:03

None. Never done a speed awareness course. Down entirely to luck. I drive around 14,000 miles a year.

Also never had an accident apart from once when I was rear ended while stationery waiting to get out of a roundabout - not my fault in any way. touch wood

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/05/2018 13:04

ICant, eh? They possibly do speed, they may also drive drunk... no idea of that but I do know that they break the law outside schools.

There are lots of people who hoick at speeders, forgetting that the speeder pays the price for it - points/and or fine/speeding course.

There are some truly shocking drivers on the road and the only reason that they haven't caused an accident is that they didn't encounter another shocking driver on that road.

I don't drink alcohol, I think the limit should be zero, but it isn't - and I still don't cluck with glee when somebody gets done for drunk driving.

FrangipaniBlue · 08/05/2018 13:06

I've had a car licence for 20years and had a motorcycle licence for 16years, I don't have any points on my licence at the minute but I have been caught speeding four times!!!

Twice were by unmarked police cars, both times I was let off with a slap on the wrist.

Twice were by camera vans, the first time I did the speed awareness course but the second time was while I was waiting to go on the speed awareness course 🙈 so I had to take the points on my licence.

All four times were in a car and on dual carriageways!!

Wendyrichardz · 08/05/2018 13:06

Half the virtuous people here posting about none and no need to speed are correct but also drive at 35 no matter what the speed limit is. Break at every corner and when a lorry comes the other way and sir in the middle lane of the motorway - all far more dangerous than driving 5 miles an hour over the limit

Mannix · 08/05/2018 13:07

I’ve been driving for 27 years and I’ve never had points on my licence. DH has been driving for a similar time and has once had 3 points (about 13 or 14 years ago).

I have attended a speed awareness course though.
