Just curious what most people have - and what people are ok with.

And before I get any strident judgements about it never being ok to have points, can people please refrain themselves.

None never had any in more than 10 years of driving. Dh has been driving over 20 years of driving. Dh would tell you that I don’t have any more by luck than design but that’s actually not true I don’t drive like an old lady but I don’t speed. I actually use the speed limiter in my car every trip and on longer ones cruise control.

Want2bSupermum · 08/05/2018 12:23

None. I live in a country that doesn't allow speed cameras and was let off by a policeman who scared the crap out of me when I first arrived and drove like a moron. I've calmed down since.

My sister was banned from driving at one point and still drives like a moron. All her points were from driving 80mph on the motorway in the early hours coming back from work. I think that if she had a person stopping her in the moment it would have been far more effective at getting her to slow down and drive responsibly.

Lying- I know so many people for whom motorway driving is an occasional event I can’t really take their opinions seriously

Unlike a quick scan of friends (I wouldn’t have a clue what their license says) my insurance company told me there is no penalty for 3 points because it’s so incredibly common.

Haberpop · 08/05/2018 12:26

None been driving for 35+, drive in excess of 25k a year but seeing a child knocked down and killed by a driver when I had just passed my test had a profound effect on how I drive.

Tinkobell · 08/05/2018 12:27

None.

blueskyinmarch · 08/05/2018 12:27

I have 3 and DH has 3. Only ones we have ever had in over 30 years of driving each. I make no excuses. I thought i was in a 40 zone but it was a 30. I now check the speed limits very, very carefully so i never get caught again.

gabsdot · 08/05/2018 12:29

I have only ever had one speeding fine and I got 2 points which have since fallen off my licence.
It was totally unfair. I got caught on the off ramp of the motorway where the speed limit goes from 80 to 50 and then to 30km within a very short piece of road. A white unmarked van was parked just after the 30km sign on the hard shoulder. He must have got everyone who passed as slowing to 30km in that distance is actually a bit dangerous and no one ever does.
I rang up the Road safety Authority (I'm in Ireland) to complain and someone quite high up rang me back. He said that officially that bit of road was tested and a 40km was recommended but there is actually no legal 40km speed limit in Ireland so they had to go to 30km which he agreed was too slow.
Sadly the police issued the fine so he couldn't cancel it.
Since then I always try to slow down to 30km at that same point and it's like I'm going to stop and non one else ever slows down. It's really stupid.

TheViceOfReason · 08/05/2018 12:29

0 now.

I had 3 point many years ago - i had a dreaded real EMERGENCY phone call and was hot-footing it to get there and left braking a bit late - on a dual carriageway, the limit reduces to 40 WELL before it needs to, and i went through the camera at 48 (if i remember correctly). It's not in a residential area with no pavements etc, so nobody was in danger, and it's no excuse - i broke the limit.

But typically i do not speed.

AddictedToRadley · 08/05/2018 12:33

No points but I have had to do the speed awareness course at a charge of £96! I was driving on an A road (dual carriageway) and started having strong contractions. As there was no lay-by I was not so much concentrating on the speed limit as trying to find an exit ramp to pull off and stop the car. Unfortunately for me, there were two people stood next to an unmarked white van with a speed gun on a bridge going across the dual carriageway (I didn’t notice them but DP did). DP doesn’t drive for medical reasons so he couldn’t take over driving at all.

After I got home from hospital 3 weeks later (DC & I we’re both very poorly) I had a letter telling me that I’d been clocked doing 78mph in a 70mph limit. Apparently being in labour is not a defence. The only defence for speeding, according to the police officer I spoke to, is if you are fleeing from somebody who is actively following you and you are fearing for your life.
As I had to do the SAC within a set time I had to take my newborn with me to the hotel and keep popping out to breastfeed. Everyone on the course were surprised that being in labour was not a defence and said I should’ve appealed but the police officer I spoke to told me that if I appealed I could end up with £1,000 fine and possibly even 6 months in prison!! At the time I was petrified about that and didn’t have the fight in me to do anything but accept the SAC.

A lot of people were on the SAC because they hadn’t realised that the speed limit driving a van is lower than the actual speed limit ie if the limit is 60mph a van can go up to 50mph and on a dual carriageway a limit of 70mph means a van can only do 60mph.

Gromance02 · 08/05/2018 12:35

None but must be pure luck.

Pandora1box · 08/05/2018 12:35

I've been driving for 20 years and never had any points on my license, speeding or otherwise. I've also never been offered a Speed Awareness course instead of points. Dangerous driving is not something I would do.

reallybadidea · 08/05/2018 12:35

none. Because it is the law not to speed and I am subject to the law. Maybe others on here aren't

Shame there isn't a law against being a smug twat

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 08/05/2018 12:37

None, but I been pulled over for speeding twice and got a warning both times. Been driving 15 years.

Nicknacky · 08/05/2018 12:37

addicted Trust me, I’m no angel when it comes to speeding but surely you can see that driving at 78 mph while having contractions was a completely stupid thing to do?

Scribblegirl · 08/05/2018 12:38

None, although as with others this is probably more luck than anything else. I don't speed in general, although I do find that in good conditions on the motorway I find my speed creeps up.

ICantCopeAnymore · 08/05/2018 12:39

@realbadidea

How odd that you think people who don't break the law are smug twats Confused

theeyeofthestormchaser · 08/05/2018 12:41

Addicted - you carried on driving while in labour and contracting? Jesus. What a bonkers, dangerous thing to do.

Groovee · 08/05/2018 12:41

None. But I got my speed wrong on a road in England and had to do a speed awareness course. I now stick to the speed limit. That was after 18 years of driving.

userabcname · 08/05/2018 12:42

I have 3 and everyone in my family finds it hilarious as they all think I drive too slowly. I was doing 35 in a 30 zone going downhill and a speed camera was just round the bend at the bottom of the hill. Could've kicked myself. I could have done the course and escaped points but it was too tricky sorting childcare so I didn't.

HeedMove · 08/05/2018 12:43

I passed my test dec 15 I have no point at all. I have one of those boxes fitted that monitors your driving so cant go over the speed limit anyway. My insurance went down from 500 to 230 this year because of my driving score. Its actually pretty good for getting you into good driving habits for those with teenagers who have recently passed and its good that you can check the app wherever you like to see how your doing.

I wonder how many of the 'I don't break the law' smuggers on this thread will confess to parking on zigzags, bad parking at schools 'just for a moment' or any other transgression?

None, I should think. Funnily enough though, I drive (slowly) past so many of the twats!

ghostyslovesheets · 08/05/2018 12:45

0 in 16 years of driving

Once had 3 points for going through an amber light but that went about 6 years ago
