The actors who played Snape, Sirius, Lupin, etc were all too old in the movies..

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Alan Rickman. But I recently started playing the new Harry Potter "Mystery at Hogwarts" game and I came to the realization (because I OBVIOUSLY don't have better things to think about) that Snape should only be 23/24 in this game. He should have been 31 at the start of the Potter series, but Rickman was in late 50's. I know life was difficult in the Potterverse but come-on, a 31 year old does not look 50.

I'm sure the reasoning was that they wanted bigger names in the movies to get more of a draw, but surely there were actors in their 30's who could have played the roles?

This thread might actually inspired me to finish the HP fanfic that is currently left written on my onedrive.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/05/2018 18:44

half written.

UmbridgeD · 09/05/2018 18:49

I’ll beta you if you want.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/05/2018 19:30

Maybe when I've managed to complete the first chapter. I'm working on another fic atm.

BlackandWhitePostcards · 09/05/2018 21:00

Loved reading this thread. Hate the ages of Harry’s parents and the marauders, really annoys me. Although I liked lupin actor and Alan Rickman in the roles. Sirius just wasn’t at all as he was described in the book. Like you said op, there must’ve been decent actors in their thirties they could’ve used.
Sorry I can’t remember who said Cam from Tracy Beaker would’ve been good as Tonks, but yes! This is who I pictured when reading the books!
Jk Rowling definitely describes seeing Hermione’s ‘white’ face in POA. It’s when they’re using the time turner, she says something like Harry saw Hermione’s white face looking out from the bushes or something. It doesn’t really matter that she made her black in the cursed child but I’m sure she meant her to be white in the books so why does she say otherwise.
Also
cursed child spoiler alert

At the end of DH2 they show grown up Draco and his wife seeing off their son on platform 9 3/4 but, well i won’t say in case anyone reads this who hasn’t seen/read cursed child.. but...well... doesn’t quite add up..

SapphireSeptember · 09/05/2018 21:23

UmbridgeD Argh, I've just started reading it, now I'm doomed to be stuck reading it until I finish it!
I'm not normal, although I have a life and a grown-up job too. Grin

OutsideContextProblem · 09/05/2018 21:32

Rufus Sewell was 34 in 2001 when the first movie came out. I'd have taken him as Snape, Sirius or even Lupin at a pinch.

Ohmydayslove · 09/05/2018 21:39

Hermione wasn’t white in the books! Not that it matters but race was mentioned as in the Patil twins and Cho Chang. Angela was black in three films but not sure mentioned in the books.

Yes snake was vile to Neville and Hermionie never mind Harry. Always thought it odd that he would be so hateful to a child who had the exact same eyes as the love of his life. Or to be hateful to her child.

porkiepiesky · 09/05/2018 21:40

I thought Cursed Child was a load of bollocks, I'm choosing to believe it never happened Grin

UmbridgeD · 09/05/2018 21:45

BlackandWhitePostcards

Please say what doesn’t add up. If they don’t know by now they were never real fans so who cares if they get spoiled. You can’t get spoiled years later anyway.Grin

JK was imperiused to come up with that cursed child bs. It’s a bad fanfic.

Lallypopstick · 09/05/2018 21:47

I assumed it's because his wife died, UmbridgeD

Lallypopstick · 09/05/2018 21:48

^ I realise you already know this though.

BlackandWhitePostcards · 09/05/2018 21:54

Yes it’s because his wife died. Cursed Child was just so not in keeping with the HP universe. I enjoyed it as a stand alone story if that makes sense. And I kind of appreciate as I’d appreciate fanfic. It just doesn’t feel canon at all and I can’t acceot it as such and I can’t believe that JK was involved in it. Yes umbridge I think she was under the inperius curse too Grin.
ohmydays, well it definitely says ‘hermione’s white face’ in POA. It doesn’t matter to me what colour she is, it’s neither here nor there but that’s what JK wrote.

aharddaysnight · 09/05/2018 22:16

Well, I chose to ignore everything Rowling says, and that only the seven books are canon (don't the books belong to the readers and all that?). Cursed child was rubbish, and I'd prefer to think of my own endings after DH. Probably in the minority :D. I do think it was a mistake of Rowling to make James, Lily etc so young (they had about two years after graduating to train to be aurors, thrice defy voldy, and build that fortune before Lily became pregnant).

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/05/2018 22:25

They werent aurors and they didnt make the money, it was left to james by his parents, his father was v v rich. They went from school into the OotP and thats where the thrice defying him thing came from.

ICantCopeAnymore · 09/05/2018 22:25

Jo has explained the "white face". You do realise black people can pale and blush?

Have those who are saying Cursed Child is rubbish actually seen it? It's a play, not a book. It has to be seen.

Also, Jo has said it's canon, so it's canon. How ridiculous to say that it's not, when the creator of the entire Wizarding World says it is Confused

ICantCopeAnymore · 09/05/2018 22:28

@BlackandWhitePostcards

doesn’t quite add up

Of course it adds up. 19 years later was in 2017. Astoria Malfoy died in the summer of 2019, so why wouldn't she have been on the platform with Draco and Scorpius?

BlackandWhitePostcards · 09/05/2018 22:47

Oh I thought Astoria had already died when Scorpius and Albus met on the train? Oops maybe I’m mistaken, I read it when it first came out so my memory’s hazy.
But also with Cursed Child I just can’t see Voldy having sex with Bellatrix, or anyone for that matter. He seemed to be too non human, if that makes sense. Also Bellatrix would have been heavily pregnant at Malfoy Manor when she killed Dobby, surely the trio would’ve noticed a big baby bump?
I appreciate that it would translate better on the stage and I bet visually it’s an amazing play however, for me, it doesn’t ring true. And I’m allowed to see it as non canon if I want to 🤷🏻‍♀️
Of course I realise black people can be pale and blush! But they’re not white when they blush. It’s a non issue anyway, who cares. Just found it strange that JK didn’t say well yes she was white in the books but she’s black in the play so get over it.

BlackandWhitePostcards · 10/05/2018 00:12

I meant black people aren’t white when they’re pale. They’re pale. She could’ve said Hermione’s pale face or shocked face or whatever. She said white face.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/05/2018 00:38

I think Anna Friel wanted the part of Tonks.

Ohmydayslove · 10/05/2018 00:46

BlackAndWhitePostcards

Apologise I meant to write hermione was white in the books bloody auto crap I do apologise.

Agree the cursed child was crap.

Oh Anna Friel was with Real life Lupin wasn’t she?

TheHulksPurplePanties · 10/05/2018 05:26

Snape was willing to hand the husband and baby of the woman he supposedly loved to Voldermort,

Been awhile since I read the books, but didn't he just tell Voldemort about the prophecy with no idea who it could have been about? And once he realized it was about Lilly and James he told Dumbledore?

I always assumed he was an asshat to the students because he couldn't break cover. Dumbledore always knew Voldemort would come back, and Snape being a decent human being would sort of hint that he was no longer a Death Eater.

OP posts:
merrymouse · 10/05/2018 06:09

I’m sure she meant her to be white in the books so why does she say otherwise.

Why would she mean her to be anything? Hermione has many important qualities that affect her character and the plot, but her skin colour really isn’t one of them.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/05/2018 06:27

I don’t think it occurred to JKR to make Hermione black or mixed race or whatever until much later in the series. The original cover of PoA shows a white Hermione (with Harry on Buckbeak’s back). If JKR has always intended Hermione to be black she would have told the illustrator that. Also, didn’t she draw her own illustrations for the early books - don’t think H is black in those either.

I actually think casting a black Hermione in Cursed Child was a good idea because there’s nothing (much) canon against it, and, for instance, Hermione’s SPEW work might tend to support that interpretation, and we are more aware now of the importance of diversity in theatre/film etc than we were in the mid-90s when JKR started writing HP.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/05/2018 06:29

I thought Dean Thomas was always pictured as black, though - didn’t JKR publish copies of her original drawings showing him as black?
