The actors who played Snape, Sirius, Lupin, etc were all too old in the movies..

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Alan Rickman. But I recently started playing the new Harry Potter "Mystery at Hogwarts" game and I came to the realization (because I OBVIOUSLY don't have better things to think about) that Snape should only be 23/24 in this game. He should have been 31 at the start of the Potter series, but Rickman was in late 50's. I know life was difficult in the Potterverse but come-on, a 31 year old does not look 50.

I'm sure the reasoning was that they wanted bigger names in the movies to get more of a draw, but surely there were actors in their 30's who could have played the roles?

With Tom Holland as James and Timothée Chalamet as Sirius.

PrivateParkin · 08/05/2018 07:15

Yes agreed. Alan Rickman was a brilliant Snape but the age was way off.

I also think that the actor who played Sirius wasn't nearly attractive enough yep, I don't think this would have been humanly possible tbh

Walkerbean16 · 08/05/2018 07:17

the parents annoyed me the most too.

merrymouse · 08/05/2018 07:17

Tim Roth was originally offered the role but turned it down. JK Rowling suggested Rickman.

I haven’t checked the Maths, but I think the other actors are around 50 now so would have been in their thirties when the first Harry Potter films were made, so their age seems about right.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 07:22

Hands up if you would love a film about the Marauders and Snape at Hogwarts.

Love it! But then they would all be teenagers again. I want attractive 30 year old Mauraders LOL!

I read somewhere that Rowling had Rickman's voice in her head while she wrote the books, so wanted him despite the age discrepancy. He does have a great voice for it. But I agree it's annoying he's not younger. IMO you can tell in the books he's relatively young and chip-on-the-shoulderish about it all.

I wonder why she chose to have them all called prof? It sounds like US convention.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 07:27

but I think the other actors are around 50 now

Gary Oldman was 49 when they filmed Order of the Phoniex, the character would have been 35/36. David Thewlis was 44, so not as bad an age gap...Alan Rickman was 61 at the time, so yes, way too old.

I dont care as they were all well cast

It's ginny who was wrong imo.

japanesegarden · 08/05/2018 07:31

Double crossing Voldemort for over a decade would put years on someone, we can surely hope

porkiepiesky · 08/05/2018 07:31

Characters they got right in the films:

  • Ron
  • Hagrid
  • Voldemort
  • Lucius Malfoy
  • Professor McGonagall
  • Professor Sprout
  • Umbridge
  • Mad eye Moody

Er. That's it.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 07:36

Yes, his voice is perfect.

I wonder who they would cast as Snape now if they re-did them?

I thought Emma Watson was brilliant. Malfoy too.

Dumbledore never quite worked for me but the second actor I preferred once I knew more about Dumbledore’s character.

Yes to Ginny - pathetic in the films.

Loved more minor characters like Mr Weasley.

MadameGrizzly · 08/05/2018 07:40

Shock

Wash your mouth out with soap and water!!

thegreatbeyond · 08/05/2018 07:41

Sirius should have been played by Rufus Sewell.

porkiepiesky · 08/05/2018 07:49

Emma Watson acts with her eyebrows, she does my head in.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 07:49

Yes to Ginny - pathetic in the films.

There were quite a few underused characters in the films, Tonks as well, but that was necessary I suppose. The films couldn't be as in-depth as the books

porkiepiesky · 08/05/2018 07:50

And Gary Oldman is a wife beater - I don't want him anywhere near my beloved Sirius!!

porkiepiesky · 08/05/2018 07:51

Actually I thought Tonks was quite well cast. I did also really like David Thewlis as Lupin but he was too old.

jamoncrumpets · 08/05/2018 07:56

Yes! I had this exact same thought the other day. They should've been in their thirties in the earlier films, for sure, as they were all contemporaries of James Potter.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 07:56

Actually I thought Tonks was quite well cast

Well cast but underused. I loved Tonks in the books!

Someone’s written an excellent fanfic. I wasn’t keen on the format at first but now it is one of my favourites.

Rufus Sewell would have been an epic Sirius Black.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/05/2018 08:05

I don’t mind Emma Watson as Hermione. Maggie Smith was awesome because she’s Maggie Smith, but the McGonagall in my head looks like the illustrations of Miss Hardbroome in The Worst Witch.

Ginny is terrible - looks like a shy little mouse, which might have worked for the second film but not from film 4 onwards.

I like Luna, though.

thecatsthecats · 08/05/2018 08:06

Richard Griffiths should have been Slughorn. He was wasted as Uncle Vernon - too upper class, instead of Vernon's nouveau richeness.

Can I take a tangent to say the same applies to Ned and Catlyn Stark in Game of Thrones? They should have been early 30s when the series began, but Sean Bean was about 50.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 08:07

Rufus Sewell

I don't see it... Though I don't have an alternative either.
