The actors who played Snape, Sirius, Lupin, etc were all too old in the movies..

I mean, don't get me wrong, I love Alan Rickman. But I recently started playing the new Harry Potter "Mystery at Hogwarts" game and I came to the realization (because I OBVIOUSLY don't have better things to think about) that Snape should only be 23/24 in this game. He should have been 31 at the start of the Potter series, but Rickman was in late 50's. I know life was difficult in the Potterverse but come-on, a 31 year old does not look 50.

I'm sure the reasoning was that they wanted bigger names in the movies to get more of a draw, but surely there were actors in their 30's who could have played the roles?

Oh, I thought it was pretty well known that Harrys parents were older when they had him and that Snap was the same age as them.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 08/05/2018 06:45

I agree. The ones who annoy me most are Harry's parents - they died when they were 21 but the actors who play them are clearly middle aged! Unless they've carried on ageing in the afterlife they should be significantly younger than they are.

I also think that the actor who played Sirius wasn't nearly attractive enough Grin

NCJaneDoeNut · 08/05/2018 06:45

I agree, however Rickman was perfect for the role and then they needed to match up the others ages too.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 08/05/2018 06:46

@NapQueen they were 20 when Harry was born! You're maybe thinking of James Potter's parents - they were older when they had James.

NapQueen · 08/05/2018 06:46

Ah maybe.

NCJaneDoeNut · 08/05/2018 06:46

Nap queen- they had him just after school and the others were the same age.

Lallypopstick · 08/05/2018 06:47

NapQueen it was his grandparents who were old when they had his father. Harry's parents were 21 when they died. Their gravestones are in the last book.

flumpybear · 08/05/2018 06:48

Far too young to be professors Wink

SomebodysNotInBedYet · 08/05/2018 06:48

Yes definitely. They weren't older when they had him NapQueen they were quite young.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 06:48

I thought it was clear in the books that they had him at 20-21? Confused

But yes, Rickman was perfect as Snape, so I suppose that explains it....I love Gary Oldman too, but Sirius should have been far younger and more attractive.

I feel they did a disservice to all of us 30 year olds who would have liked some eye candy in the movies. Grin

Agreed! I was a child when the movies came out so happy with teenage eye ca fa but as an adult watching now I'd appreciate if there was even one fanciable adult. (I actually did crush on Alan Rickman but not as Snape!)

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 06:50

Definitely! How much experience in potions can one possibly have to be made a professor at 21! (although maybe is ability to mix chemicals would explain why he looked 55 at 31...).

*eye candy!

TheHulksPurplePanties · 08/05/2018 06:51

See, Snape in the later books, I find crushable in a weird way, which is why I would appreciate a more age appropriate actor. Love Rickman, but his costuming in Snape made him look older.

They got Lucius Malfoy right. in the best possible way.

I didn't see it till I saw Jason Issacs in the new Star Trek. Yum.

Also, Lucius Malfoy was supposed to be older. At least 40's.

Maybe Old Man Snape was creative liscence from the kids' perspective. We always saw our teachers (especially the mean ones) as crotchety and ancient.

feral · 08/05/2018 07:03

This has long been a thing that annoyed me. I love Alan Rickman but he really was way way too old. The others too but not to such excess.

As someone who used to write a lot of HP fan fiction it really buggered up my mental images of characters.

feral · 08/05/2018 07:03

And yes to to Jason Isaacs, man is a vision Smile

blackteasplease · 08/05/2018 07:05

Never thought of this before but yanbu.

They are all so good in it though and I love Mme's theory.

Lupin was supposed to look old for his age though.

blackteasplease · 08/05/2018 07:06

Also I had imagined Snape as Alan Rickman in my head before he was cast - Alan Rickman looked like one of my school teachers!

HasAnyoneGotAProblemWithThat · 08/05/2018 07:10

As much as I love Alan Rickman he was way way too old to play Snape. I have to separate the films from the books.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 08/05/2018 07:12

Yes it meant a deviation from the book. But they were all fabulous so I got over it Wink

BTW if anyone likes the Snape of later books, there is a whole heap of Fanfiction on the subject, some of which is well written 🙂

Hobbitch · 08/05/2018 07:14

YANBU even though no one was better suited to Snape than Alan Rickman.

Totally agree about Luscious, er, Lucius Malfoy!

Hands up if you would love a film about the Marauders and Snape at Hogwarts.
