Just read an article in the Daily Mail written by Ben Shackleton’s wife bleating on about how brave he is to risk his life attempting to climb Everest. AIBU to think it’s not brave to do this when the biggest risk is leaving two young children without a dad. He should have done this before he had kids - or not had kids at all if he can’t stop doing these stupid pointless challenges for months on end and risking his life in the process! How

Fogle is a hobbyist compared to people who do dangerous jobs. When someone is in the Forces, a mountain guide, a technical diver etc, they have the benefit of extensive training and a wealth of experience, so their competency levels are significant and they are continuously improving their skills.

Doing it as an occasional hobbyist for thrills and kicks is a different ball game altogether.

User1492 read about Sir Ranulph, he wasn't 'dragged' up the mountain, he did loads of training for it for years beforehand and he is hardly just an armchair enthusiast who fancied giving it a try with no fitness or experience of hardship or expeditions beforehand.

thetriangle you should read Ellis J Stewart's book about a boy from Hartlepoole's dream of climbing Everest, he had absolutely no funds and spent years and years trying to scrape the money together as many people do.

Alison Hargreaves is relevant because she was a parent who, very sadly, died doing the dangerous mountaineering.

Mentioning her isn’t equating her with others of much lesser skill and experience.
