AIBU to have a party with no food

Landmark birthday & have around 70 people invited to an evening in a pub. Starting at 8pm, DH & I have decided to provide some drinks & nibbles but no 'buffet', mainly due to logistics not cost. Another friend did this & with the late start it worked fine, but one guest has expressed horror surprise at this - views please.

You need food for a party. Otherwise it's a night in the pub not a party.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 05/05/2018 17:32

I think most people would expect food but if you tell them to eat beforehand then no big deal

OwlinaTree · 05/05/2018 17:33

8 isn't late! 10 and you could get away with no food.

MissMary0fSweden · 05/05/2018 17:33

I'd expect there to be food- if it's a party, there is food surely?

So I think you need to tell people beforehand at least.

I’d think this, unless you’re laying on free drinks.

Agustarella · 05/05/2018 17:34

Very unreasonable and penny pinching, sorry. 8pm is dinner time. Be prepared for everyone to go to McDonalds at 8.45!

Sirzy · 05/05/2018 17:35

I would be surprised if there wasn’t food provided.

If you don’t then you need to make it clear on the invite

keepondreaming · 05/05/2018 17:35

Do make sure everyone is aware that they must eat beforehand. I'd hate to turn up for an evening out and find there was only snacks. You might find half your guests disappear and eat elsewhere or go for a takeaway.

AgentProvocateur · 05/05/2018 17:35

I’d expect food at a party.

FlirtyRomanticToast · 05/05/2018 17:35

Party with no food?! Well I'm not coming Grin

AnnieAnoniMouser · 05/05/2018 17:36

I think it’s very odd to host a ‘party’ and not have food of some sort. People, quite reasonably, expect at least nibbles. I also think it’s irresponsible when you are providing alcohol.

Coconut0il · 05/05/2018 17:36

As long as everyone knows before I can't see the problem.

Grilledaubergines · 05/05/2018 17:37

What is the logistics issue?

YABU.

formerbabe · 05/05/2018 17:37

People will want food.

If you don't do food, make it clear or people will be leaving early to grab a takeaway.

IbizaLovesSundays · 05/05/2018 17:40

I'm afraid I agree with everyone else. I would be expecting some food. Even if it was just sausage rolls and party finger food

LartenCrepsley · 05/05/2018 17:40

A party does need food.
What is the logistical problem? Maybe the MN hive mind can help find a solution.

BrightonCalling · 05/05/2018 17:41

People will expect food.

At the very least ask the pub if theyd be OK with you ordering in pizza and get a deal sorted with a pizza delivery place ahead of time.

Or do a potluck.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 05/05/2018 17:41

Yes of course you need food!

SilverySurfer · 05/05/2018 17:41

Sounds a bit naff - what logistics would prevent you providing food?

IronMansIronButt · 05/05/2018 17:42

If you don't have food, at least let everyone know beforehand so they eat ahead of it. Most of us would totally expect food and if they don't know you'll find everyone leaving very early to go and find somewhere to eat.

JonSnowsCloak · 05/05/2018 17:42

What's the logistics? My dad did this recently for his retirement do, he didn't book out the pub but we sort of took over half of it with about 50 people attending, the pub just stuck a table in the middle and put the food there? If it's because they don't have a kitchen then Morrisons Costco or m and s do platters, people will assume some sort of food even if just sandwiches at 8pm. Otherwise it is just a night in a pub? Sorry!

CoughLaughFart · 05/05/2018 17:42

What do you mean by nibbles? Anything hot, or just crisps and nuts?
