To hate Jo Wiley

Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

OP posts:
OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 03/05/2018 21:31

I thought I couldn't stand Jo Whiley's voice but then I heard Mary Anne Hobbs. She sounds so wet.

Smidge001 · 03/05/2018 21:35

It’s madness. Drivetime was excellent. I didn’t like the cooking slot with Nigel actually - couldn’t stand his voice bit like OP hating Jo Wiley. She can keep her evening slot where she gets to be a groupie - if it’s a band I like I don’t care about her sucking up, and if it’s a band I don’t like I just turn it off. But drivetime?!!! One thing I love about British radio vs some of the crap I’ve had to listen to overseas (Australia I’m mainly looking at you) is that we don’t have to have posses of presenters chit chatting to each other all the time and having a mutual love in. We have some quality broadcasters who can run the show on their own. Ken, Terry, Simon - sure they have a bit of a chat to the traffic / sports bods, but the main show is well crafted by intelligent people.

Simon doesn’t need a showtime partner!!!

And WTAF about losing confessions???? That is the craziest thing I’ve heard.

If they have to have a female presenter in the day time, can’t they replace Jeremy vine? Nothing could be worse than him.

Or have a week on, week off share system for 6 months, and we can vote as to which we prefer via listener numbers. It’s pointless having a woman on the show just for the sake of it. She is NOT the best person for the job. AT ALL.

Arggghh I’m so annoyed.

user1486076969 · 03/05/2018 21:36

At least we still have Drivetime to look forward to tomorrow Grin

TheMadGardener · 03/05/2018 21:37

Another 40-something dedicated Drivetime listener here, also bereft about the changes. No Confessions? No Nigel? What am I going to listen to in the bath if I can't listen to the Confessions podcast?? I do like 5live but sometimes I just want to listen to some music and some chat. And I'm really not that keen on JW. This is a sad day.

Also totally agree that Steve Wright is cap and should have been put out to grass years ago. Love Ken Bruce and Popmaster though.

JontyDoggle37 · 03/05/2018 21:41

Oh dear god. No Nigel, no confessions and no Matt. And I like Jo wiley, in her edgy, evening music slot. But absolutely NOT intruding in Simon and his brilliant show. He’s one of the most genuine and dri-ly sarcastic presenters out there, and the show always cheers me up. I want to two petitions - one to get rid of Steve Wright, and another to move Jo into his slot and leave Simon alone!

JontyDoggle37 · 03/05/2018 21:41

Phew! You have no idea how many times autocorrect changed that post to something entirely inappropriate 😳

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 03/05/2018 21:44

I would totally sign a petition to keep drivetime the same! I had been thinking of emailing BBC but thought it would make no difference. A petition might?!

therealposieparker · 03/05/2018 21:47

WTF...no confessions??? My DH and I have already decided they've lost us as audience members.

OhPuddleducks · 03/05/2018 21:54

I’ve been thinking about this more than I should. Thing is, you can’t have Confessions without Matt et al. Can you Imagine Jo doing confessions?! She could suck the joy out of Joy Division (if she didn’t love music so much). She would not do well with something as joyful as confessions. It would be dreadful.

PolaDeVeboise · 03/05/2018 21:55

I can't stand her either - annoying, smug bint. The Drivetime Show is PERFECT as is - I've lost count of the number of times I've cried with laughter at the confession and their reaction to it! Sad times, don't understand it AT ALL.

Oh and I CAN'T STAND Steve Wright either, egotistical knob-end.

GottaFindTchange · 03/05/2018 22:07

The vitriol for Steve Wright???? I don't understand it... He's not my favourite but I like his daftness.

I like Sara Cox. I think she's getting her own show at 10pm but I don't listen then. So wish she had a permanent daytime slot. She's very funny.

Chris Evans is ok- relentlessly energetic... But my fave is Jeremy Vine.

Also cannot stand show tunes lady... Elaine Paige. Couldn't listen to Dermot O'Dreary.
Weekends on R2 are crap.

YoucancallmeVal · 03/05/2018 22:07

Of all the daytime R2 shows to fuck about with:( hate the breakfast show, can't stand lame arse ken or smug Jeremy and the Steve Wright show is abysmal. Love Simon mayo in its entirety. Also loved the jo Wiley one but why they combined them I do not know. Just shit news on every level :(

Unfinishedkitchen · 03/05/2018 22:14

Couldn’t stand Jo Whiley on R1. She was sooo try hard and appeared to work hard to try and make the listeners jealous for some strange reason e.g ‘here I am with my best friends Coldplay having the best time ever at Glastonbury and you’re not here’. She’s a proper smug weirdo who seems to think she’s kooky and cool like a rock groupie skipping around fields bare foot.

KichenDancefloor · 03/05/2018 22:15

Waaaaaaa! Sad

I'm off to sulk on R1, R4, radio x and absolute radio (and the crappy local stations when the kids are in the car).

No confessions? Incontheeevible!

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 03/05/2018 22:25

Love the show Steve.

If you like Simon Mayo, try the Wittertainment podcast. He's um... a bit different on there. And much, much funnier.

I don't hate Jo Wiley. She just grates on me, always has done. She may well be lovely in real life, but I just can't get on board with her.

PavlovaPrincess · 03/05/2018 22:37

I can't bear Jo Wiley either, but like Steve Wright, she must have something on the powers that be because she keeps getting these gigs.

She's awful for all the reasons everyone else has said. Smug, name dropping and tries too hard to be cool. Ruins the Glastonbury coverage for me every year.

Love Sara Cox though.

PavlovaPrincess · 03/05/2018 22:37

And loving 'she's a proper turnip' Grin

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 03/05/2018 22:43

Yy to weekends on R2 being dire.... Sundays kill me!

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 03/05/2018 22:43

She can keep her evening slot where she gets to be a groupie

Christ @Smidge001

JW has an annoying delivery and a charmless manner but with years on the Evening Session on her CV at the height of the (sexist) Britpop era plus the fact she never bought into that awful “ladette” movement to get a foot on the ladder (looking at you, Cox) to call her that is ridiculously out of line.

EdWinchester · 03/05/2018 22:49

I don't mind Jo Wiley, but only cos I never hear her on the radio, When she was on R1, she used to drive me mental.

She was always trying too hard to be cool and young and she was neither.

Double acts on the radio are rarely successful imo.

I suggest a defection to Johnny Vaughan on Radio X - he is very funny and sharp.

EllieFredrickson · 03/05/2018 22:51

Have loved Simon Mayo as a broadcaster since I first heard him on radio 1 all those years ago. He makes it all sound effortless.

I agree he sounded bereft at the end (he said something about only being able to hold it together if people didn't say nice things).

Sunshine on Leith finished me off today.

I too think this is transition and he won't stay for long. The writing seems to be taking off ( I think the new book has been optioned as a film) so think this might be more of a focus.

Just don't stop the Wittertainment podcast. I'm interested in films but it's more about middle aged ramblings on life.

MsRinky · 03/05/2018 22:51

I once bumped into Steve Lamaq at Glastonbury. It was about 4am and I was somewhat over-refreshed. Apparently I harangued him for some time about whether he could actually stand Jo Wylie because surely he couldn't because he seemed like such a nice man. He was very diplomatic.

Ihatebuildabear · 03/05/2018 22:55

I can't believe Simon mayo is 59!!!!

Boooommm · 03/05/2018 23:11

Radio 2 in general is boring as fuck. Whoever does the 'no g' bit should be shot immediately

TerrieTibbs · 03/05/2018 23:12

Not just me then. So over cool and cringingly gushing all the time.

And as for Steve Wright and in particular the spectacularly boring FACTOIDS, and unfunny everything, I can never hit the change to another station button quick enough if I make the mistake of hearing even half a second of any of his show ...
